For a fellow Leigh lad or Leythunian has we are now known due to the massive influx of Eastern Europians in Leigh these days Paul came across quite well in the Documentry it makes a change see,in a educated Leyther most of the current Leythers are still ratting and snarrin rabbits or spearing carp as pastimes just had a walk around town it was like going to one of Ian Dewhursts fav raves every bugger had a shell suit on and where talkin gibberish ?This England. Then Wigan Cas Days ...Now Harry Enfield Land LOL

What's needed is a documentry with people who where on the scene from pre Wigan Cas days people who have never left the scene throughout all the years people who have lived and breathed Soul Music people who can tell the real story about the beginnings of what Godin termed Northern Soul plus the people like John Anderson Martin Koppell Simon Soussan Ady Crosdale I Levine Kev Roberts Dickie Searling and Andy Rix Rob Thomas Andy Dyson Guy Henninghan Keb and the guys in the states like Bob Abarams ( Boba ) Val Shively ect et ect

Plus input from the artist who are still with us in a warts n all Documentry about Northern Soul the true story mind you it would have to be a few hours long lol

i saw the show, top marks, really enjoyed, saw alot of familar faces, its nice to see pete and sue, two lovely people,few people asked me over the years what was the early days of Wigan like, and the dancing,first 2 years possibly 3, of the casino you just cant put into words, the atmosphere, the buzz, most of all the music. i look like i'll be taken to the grave with anyone else knowing, cheers Billy.

Does Ady still dance like the gopher doll from Caddyshack? I placed it next to him one night at a London 'Do' whilst he was hitting the floor and bugger me they danced one and the same!!!! I still dont think he's forgiven me, if he remembers at all LOL. If you like I still have a pic of Ady in vest, headband and RIGHT ON salute I can mail to you so you can at least prep yourself for future sightings? I'll get my tin hat now!!

Last time I spoke with Elaine she was trying to sort out the distributors from cutting out a major chunk of the film central to the experience, namely the move from youth club to soul night to allnighters, hence the delay. I support her fully, better to have the film as you want it and a little delayed rather than releasing something with all the balls cut off! Not sure if it's going to be a mainstream release or not, who cares! This looks set to be the best film on the subject to date so I'm looking forward to it.

Thanx mate, I agree with you, all or nothing. Probably the distributors want to cut bits for cinema release then flog a directors cut blue ray with all of Elaines footage in. More ££££ for them ! I'm a cynical git but "money make the world go round"

Caddyshack the film, cult classic, released a dancing Gopher doll as thats' what everyone remembers from the film and when placed next to Ady at the Dome (I think) they had exactly the same shuffling dance style; priceless   As for Horace not Ady; was this the first ever 100 Club cover-up then pmsl x

I seem to remember Spencer's setting up shop at the Casino, must have been late 70's.  As well as 40" bags, they did pegs and some MC Hammer type kecks with pleats all the way round.

Richard & Elaine and still in business I think today selling golf plus4's, lovely guys, nothing too much trouble even when you gave them a detailed breakdown on exactly how many buttons, flaps or fish weights were to be sewn into the bottom of your flares. Now that was customer service (in case your wondering, weights helped your bags get a perfect look whilst spinning outwards)

From a film makers perspective....and thinking 1/25th of a second...or frame at a time....and given the 26 minute window.........I believe the time available was maximised with the most positive comment/imagery and reflection....as could possibly have been given to it. From that perspective.....I think it was great...X

...I may have been thinking of aircraft models at the time Manus!!x We use Sony VX2000's for digital capture in general and Adobe Prem for editing....done so for 10 years and stick with it...! Like me vimyl....when u know wot ure doing u don't mess!!x The technical aspects I leave to those who know better!x Peter will be happy to know there is more frames per second for him to manipulate....he's got a 2 second piece that he's making a movie out of at present.........he must be knickered...I mean knackered...!x

On the show, how can you say it covered everything? It skipped a few decades, or did it cover all the bits that your only interested in.

I enjoyed the show .... Same old " this England" clips mind ... The Wallace's up in Dundee should be after royalties the amount of time the appear on these clips ... Cringed a wee bit when Paul was having his refresher coarse from Fran as well ... Lol!! However on the whole thought it showed today's scene Ina good light ...well made documentary from a guy who is obviously stil passionate about ns...

Also nice to see some input from the Wigan young team....." The futures bright ya gotta wear shades" !!!! .... Oops wrong genre!!!! Lol...

I seen tons more crime on the very early rave scene, much more than I ever seen at Wigan.

Manchester could be very seriously unplesant early doors on that scene.

The Blackburn warehouses, Conspiracy, that one on Oldham St too, it was all about the gangs who ran them, it was pretty bad, just everyone was gurning too much and most didnt notice, I did, cos I knew which gangs were involved and knew what was going on behind the scenes, Cheatham Hill and Salford, these guys were always lurking.

But saying all that, when I first got involved, It didnt half remind me of the Northern scene and I always thought it had all be done before in the 70s, so i always did see the similarities to be fair.

I've been to some well iffy parties, but the entrance into Konspirecy took some beating for dodgyness.

The whole set up was edgy, you had to get by the gangs on either side of the door selling gear, the room upstairs on your left was chocker full of dodgy lads and the light on the stairs down to the main room was set to get you right in the eyes just as lads would lean in and say in that menacing way 'want some E, Trips mate'. Loved it

Other clubs like Venus in Nottingham or Renaissance in Mansfield were very much like Northern Soul, not that the majority were off their napper, but more that people talked about records, what they bought, label they were on, who was Djing etc but we're also bang into the music.

It also seemed very familiar having amongst others seasoned soul campaigners Phill Worrel, Shelvo, Trill, Alan Greaves, Mick Cullen - sometimes Jocko, Pepsi, Kerso, Karen from Manchester in the room as well.

As a Moderator I have resisted posting on this thread but boy oh boy I would pay good money to see that lot in a room together. 

Would also suggest throwing a few more people off the scene in there too like Butch, Pat (the boxer) Brady, Rob Thomas's brother Kev, Rob Wicks & what the hell, Russ Winstanley. 

Now that would be a hell of a documentary but it might not contain much 'Culture'

thought it was ok overall - gave it a 4.  I really liked Paul Mason - a sympathetic and involved view.  However, I thought the kung fu reference was a cartload of *********:!  I'm a child of the twisted wheel and the highland room, blackpool mecca in the 60s - we were dancing like that way before Bruce Lee kung fu'd his way onto the screen.  Too many circle skirts too.  Enjoyed it though

For folks who went to youth clubs in the 70s and saw the NORTHERN SOUL enigma take shape, but never joined in, I think it would be a 'blast from the past'.

 

Its always great to see old footage of 'the good old days' but the reality is the 'scene' is bigger today that its ever been before and perhaps a show made about todays global scene would be even more interesting.

Thoroughly enjoyed the Culture Show documentary, as with anything if you are too close to the subject it is too easy to pick fault but I found very little to fault here. The people were genuine Northern fans and the presenter came over as a true enthusiast  who like the rest of us was  bitten by the soul bug and a decent dancer too. Elaines comments were spot on and her passion was evident, the upcoming film looks promising as well. As someone has already commented they avoided the obvious Frank Wilson references and I did expect an I'm on my way moment to close the show especially as it  mostly centred around the Casino but no, instead, they closed with a lovely two minutes that was truly original.

It's always a problem trying to explain to non Northern people what the scene is all about, you try to keep it short but at some point the listeners eyes glaze over and you know you've lost their attention but you could do worse than point them in the direction of this programme.

 

Well done all involved. 10/10

Just watched that Culture show on Northern Soul - Thought Paul Mason was a proper presenter and pretty cool with a love of the music. It makes a change from the usual carve up you get with these types of programmes. Clearly a bit of a promo for Elaine Constantine new film but none the worse for that. Nice to hear a few different tracks played on the sound track especially the brilliant TURLEY RICHARDS - I FEEL ALRIGHT - COLUMBIA might just play it on Sunday at The Ommaroo. My only gripe is the bit when Paul asked Fran Franklin whether the dance style came from the USA and she said no and trotted out that crap about Bruce Lee and Kung Fu. That misinformation was originally put out there by ace dancer Keb Darge who admittedly put some of that into his routines but that was long after the original mods created the style in the late 60's. Those original mods were almost entirely influenced by the visiting American soul acts that performed live at clubs like The Twisted Wheel. Some of these acts like The Vibrations were legendary dancers and performers and when they appeared in the UK they just blew away the audience with their footwork and acrobatics. Just watch this clip from Hollywood a-go-go especially the last minute and a half and you will see where it all came from

Amazing clip and you're right, proper keks show good footwork unlike baggies / tent skirts that hide the very basic 'Wigan walking' steps that have remerged as of late.

Really interesting that each dancer on the clip finishes his bit and walks off with attitude - exactly like break dancers do today.
