a good many still to make up their minds then....assuming a good proportion of the u.k. watched it?, i think anyone who takes on this most hallowed of subjects, deserves the maximum for the effort, it most certainly wasn't over-subjective, at the same time it had an air of disaffection from the media hype we would all imagine it would be threatened with.....we begrudge with perpetual consistency, anything of this nature for fear of it perverting the course of justice, that in, telling it like it is and not belittling the scene and its congregation.

this, however, was respectful and as if to hammer the point of longevity home, managed to portray a few of our well known brothers and sisters as proof that this genre, once scoffed at as being another fad, simply hasn't gone away and that the mantle is passing faultlessly, from one generation to the next...slowly but surely, the youth of this country are realizing that REAL music begins at home, that it never went away.

just like "the pen is mightier than the sword", so the stylus is mightier than i-tunes

Just watched it. 5 out of 5. Loved it. Really great overview of the scene. Makes me want to go to a big nighter!

A really genuine, hearfelt documentary. I believed everything that everyone said and really felt their passion.

Bravo!

It wouldn't have been the same without the clip of the lad at Wigan gurning and doing windmills before his backdrop, it really feels like i've come to know him over the years! :D

....the knickers have to be flown proudly...I reckon!x I smiled and chuckled with respect not embarressment as they swirled......and I feel that as exhibitionists....WHICH WE ALL ARE who take foot or ar*e to the floor.....then we should be proud of our confidence and passion in shariing it with each other. NOOOO...put ure clothes back on Len....what I mean is.....we all go to see the spectacle and be part of the spectacle. I love the different characters....dress.....and individual 'things' that go off at a doo. I cannot think of anytime I walked out of a function and felt like taking the pi** out of anyone for their clothes or personna......luv'd it all....and the knickers.......were brill methinks!x Believe it or not....that very 2 second flash....may well encourage many other Ladies who are confident dancers to return or come for the first time to a gig. I work with many stage performers...dancers and the like. They would have loved her confidence throughout the program......end of! We are all different...and it takes all sorts. Northern Soul...luv it...X

Denise (my Mrs.) watched it with me and said something that rang true to me , when we started seeing each other she didn't really know much about my passion :wicked: (Soul that is!) and when she was younger was a skinhead so knew all the Motown & youth club stuff but when we got together she enjoyed my "Northern" sounds which is always a promising sign  . Over time she now says can you put this on or that on and hasn't got a clue who it is or what label but she loves it?

Watching that last night had me smiling, cringing and wishing I got my arse out more.

One of her workmates after watching the programme asked her to show how to do Northern Soul dancing and Denise said " It's not until you get on the floor and your feet start moving with your/the emotion of the record playing at the time and you either get it or you don't.

Fair play I Say , I think we're a bit over protective sometimes but hey!

Swifty

I would not have been able to do what Paul tried without music to 'dance' too! I leap off me seat automatic and me body moves when its right....no thinking about it!x I think he did well to do a move of any kind just 'moving'.....it ain't dancing is it?....with passion!x Ure Mrs sounds that she's tuned in alright Swifty.....nice 1!x

It was a lot better than I expected,in fact parts of it were really good, certainly not perfect but is it possible to make the perfect "northern" programme? We can't agree about the music so we're not going to agree about tele

I remember seeing you around mid to late 90s but never got the chance to talk.Let me just say your posts have injected real entertainment to the site. Most of em you have to read through the crazyness a few times but the main points you make are sound. The main thing wrong with this scene at the moment is that the characters like yourself are very thin on the ground. The great nights of the past were made great by an important mixture of great music and great characters. The music is still the same but the scary corner people have mostly gone.I used to travel as much to be around those people as i did to dance.Nowadays it all seems so commercialised the magic essence seems to have waned.I hope the kids in the programme forge their own scene with their own identity and i hope some of them are characters because thats what it will need to break free of the corporate industry it has become.Keep posting mate i need the misery slapping out of me as much as Len.

Patto

Patto mate, you aren't going to the right allnighters. Mind you, a lot of the characters have gone to the big allnighter in the sky, due in no small part to their lifestyle.

Ha ha! I know, total turn around but had to make up for my early criminal error of slagging something I've not seen!

Re bags, they are awful things. The only bit I didn't like was the young souls bit. They have got it about as wrong as you can get it.

.... & Steve is one of the nicest & genuine blokes on this scene, & wouldn't have meant anything malicious by it. I know Pete & Susan too, they're fabulous, but even I chuckled at the bloomers. I'm sure Susan doesn't give two hoots what people think about her pantaloons, as she wouldn't be putting them on show in the first place, if she did. I personally feel she was having a giggle with us & I commend her for it.

Isn't it just mate.

She was very special in lots of ways was me mam. She just let me get on with me weekends away - I always finished work early on a Friday to make sure we could be off all nitering somewhere. We never had much but she'd ensure that me - and any of me mates who turned up,  had a nice Friday tea before we set off - the best chicken and chips ever.

I enjoyed the programme. I was pleased the records shown were originals. Overall everyone put their points over well and honestly.

The comments about the Northern Soul Scene being like the rave scene of the 90's i did not agree with.

Bit like comparing a round of golf at St Andrews with pitch and putt at the park! The quality is totally different!

you obviously know nowt about house music, you're right in some ways though, go compare 'cc Rodgers or Mass order to say, 'phillly dog around the world' or 'the peanut duck' Northern soul is obviously far more shallow and trite than house. But then again I'm prone to sweeping generalisations about a music scene I know nothing about, just like you.

Think you're way off there mate. I have been going to Highfield since they started and have seen Jordan, Ben and Danny dj elsewhere too. I love their full on enthusiasm and their amazing and ever increasing knowledge of the music. So they dress a bit seventies. They're happy, what harm does it do? If not for them, who'll be on the floor in 20 years time?

15 minutes was alright, the other was pure comedy! :D

No mention of the 80s scene? :g:

Seems to me Wigan Casino was the death of the true underground movement, certain people mass marketed n. soul for their own ends, all the bull that went with that is back and whats left today.

You didn't have to wear n.soul  t-shirts or n.soul tats all over you to be into the music? and then the dancing, you do what you want, what did she say , you're missing one step?

Everyone dressing the same doing the same dance, stick to line dancing

Thought it was really good :) . Down to earth and not the usual arty bbc2 fodder . Liked the bloke . Thought he was a good sort and loved how he gave it his all dancing on camera and what came across as his very genuine reactions to soul do . Good

As many others have stated it was only a 1/2 hour long, but i enjoyed it, as did my Mrs and my son who even recognized most of the tracks played (not artists or labels,, but his favorite used to be Tommy Hunt- Loving on the losing side so he's not all bad lol)(wasn't going to add this but  the wife's favorite is DILYIID but at least she has met Kenny and heard him playing it).

i gave it 4/5.

Too many circle skirts

They always seem to portray us like that, skirts and trousers its so far from the truth. But on a positive note Paul and Elaine showed the passion in Northern Soul

Dear Detective Constable Warmesley or " Cream " as you were known to your friends in Bolton K Division

Being one of those " little bleeders"   It Has Taken Many years to Find you ....

I Have had a Mystery that i think you and your collegue Det Constable Turner may be able to shed a bit of light on......

You May remember that you busted me in 1974 with 50  Phenmetrazine Theoclate tablets ( FILON ) .......     How come when i got to court 45 of them had gone Missing ?????

Yours....... Still Puzzled   ....   B

Dear B

Only 5 turned up in court because you only had 50 now if you had had 1000 maybe we would

have turned up with 50 in court.

P.S. Next time we bust you please have the decency to have some Bombers or Red & Browns.

Lots of Love

Like Brent I watched it and was entertained by it..I was against the filming and was at all 3 Nighters

I know Pete and Sue and whilst we are not the greatest of friends there is no doubting the passion and love they share for the music, unlike lots of the keyboard warriors on Soul Source they are out every weekend at Soul Nights, dayers and nighters

Whilst the comments on SS are uncalled for they where expected, what the hell have the clothes some of us choose to wear got to do with things and yet SS is obsessed with this fact

I have heard comments like the young souls need to form their own identity. I know most of them and class them as my friends and they do have their own identity, anyone in doubt should visit The Black Bee in Manchester

Some folks say they all dance the same, not true the variation in dance styles and dress codes is greater that it has ever been and anyone getting out n about would be aware of this

People have questioned how long can the old souls dance for, visit The Twisted Wheel in Manchester where you will see some origianal Soul folks who have been on the scene since the 60s and are still doing their thing on the dance floor

The programme was not perfect but was a lot better than expected, my biggest dissapointment was that it appaered to say you needed to be on drugs and working class white..I was Black when I went to the first Casino Nighter in 74 and still am

I am 58 and from Wigan although it was not the first Nighter I went to and like most of you I am sick of hearing about The 40th Anniversaries, but not as sick as the relentless unwarranted attacks on people for the way they dress and the music they choose to dance to that appear constantly on SS

Speaking as a (dread I say it !)) returnee to the scene, very much like Paul Mason. Up till 12 months ago I had been out of the scene for 30 odd years but after dancing for the last year, I can agree with all he said at the end. The music feels the same & the way I feel when I'm dancing is the same, just like it did 30 years ago. It wasn't the whizz the made it the "best night ever" . It was the people, the music, & the passion involved & I think the program did translate that to an extent, although I dreaded my Mum finding out about the drug side of it !

As it happens, as I work nights, she had seen it before I. I dropped her off some milk on my way home & waited for the backlash !!!!

She looked at me & said "now I understand why you go to these soul nights, it all makes sense" She's 82 bless her !

So imho the programme has done some good as it has explained to the uninitiated just why we do it !!!!!!!

If I hadn't returned to the scene, this programme would have made me want to. Maybe we'll see some old/new faces around because of it ? What with Elaines film coming soon as well, dance floors may get a bit busy.

I give it 4 outta 5, just 'cos nothings perfect ! Bob

A couple of points. I don't think anyone was getting at the couple featured in the program. They are obviously very nice people and love the music and the scene. I think most of the negative comments were because the program makers portrayed them as the norm on national television. Thereby giving the wrong impression to the non soul loving masses.

The other thing I don't understand is this. Why do the young souls feel the need to wear the old mid seventies fashions? Are they just copying their parents? Or do they feel they need a uniform to show that "we are into northern"?

On a personal level, back in the seventies, me and my mates were very much fashion victims. We would never have been seen dead in the baggies once they had gone out. I would rather have seen the youngsters wearing today's fashions myself.

I agree with the part about the youngsters, but if they walked into a venue with their underpants showing over the top of skater jeans, they'd probably be viewed with suspicion, and almost definitely have the pi*s taken out of them. I don't wear 'the uniform' myself, and in the past I've been critical of those who do, but thinking about it for a moment, what are we supposed to wear and who decides? Trousers and a shirt? Jeans and T-Shirt? A mix and match. Can the shirt have a logo? It's a minefield, and if we've got to please the fashionistas before we begin to enjoy the night and the music, what chance have we got?

it could be worse,we could all be naked,lol...now there's a half hour show,we wouldn't want on tv.
