Agentsmith Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 a good many still to make up their minds then....assuming a good proportion of the u.k. watched it?, i think anyone who takes on this most hallowed of subjects, deserves the maximum for the effort, it most certainly wasn't over-subjective, at the same time it had an air of disaffection from the media hype we would all imagine it would be threatened with.....we begrudge with perpetual consistency, anything of this nature for fear of it perverting the course of justice, that in, telling it like it is and not belittling the scene and its congregation. this, however, was respectful and as if to hammer the point of longevity home, managed to portray a few of our well known brothers and sisters as proof that this genre, once scoffed at as being another fad, simply hasn't gone away and that the mantle is passing faultlessly, from one generation to the next...slowly but surely, the youth of this country are realizing that REAL music begins at home, that it never went away. just like "the pen is mightier than the sword", so the stylus is mightier than i-tunes

Popular Post sepia Posted September 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 26, 2013 was nice to see something on our working class council telly about our music. for me it showed the passion we have for soul music & how some youngsters are joining the scene, feeling how we did/do. but it was the culture show & it did what it said on the tin....all it did was open the lid, gave it a stir, making sure it hadn't gone off, lol. we all have our own reasons for getting into the music/scene & are on soul source for the love of soul... its the music that does it & no tv show, film or book will ever change that. 7

Popular Post Swifty Posted September 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 26, 2013 Denise (my Mrs.) watched it with me and said something that rang true to me , when we started seeing each other she didn't really know much about my passion (Soul that is!) and when she was younger was a skinhead so knew all the Motown & youth club stuff but when we got together she enjoyed my "Northern" sounds which is always a promising sign . Over time she now says can you put this on or that on and hasn't got a clue who it is or what label but she loves it? Watching that last night had me smiling, cringing and wishing I got my arse out more. One of her workmates after watching the programme asked her to show how to do Northern Soul dancing and Denise said " It's not until you get on the floor and your feet start moving with your/the emotion of the record playing at the time and you either get it or you don't. Fair play I Say , I think we're a bit over protective sometimes but hey! Swifty 6

Popular Post Quinvy Posted September 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 26, 2013 A couple of points. I don't think anyone was getting at the couple featured in the program. They are obviously very nice people and love the music and the scene. I think most of the negative comments were because the program makers portrayed them as the norm on national television. Thereby giving the wrong impression to the non soul loving masses. The other thing I don't understand is this. Why do the young souls feel the need to wear the old mid seventies fashions? Are they just copying their parents? Or do they feel they need a uniform to show that "we are into northern"? On a personal level, back in the seventies, me and my mates were very much fashion victims. We would never have been seen dead in the baggies once they had gone out. I would rather have seen the youngsters wearing today's fashions myself. 14

Popular Post Len Posted September 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 26, 2013 Sooty i need the misery slapping out of me as much as Len. Patto Hi mate, I’m not miserable — honest! I (like the rest of us) care that’s all…..Here’s a couple of scenarios that may help some of these ‘young ones’ understand my take on ‘it’…..and hope some of you can relate, ref what ‘Citizen P’ touched upon earlier….. ….It was the mid 80’s and I was a 14 year old Mod, pretty ‘plastic’ and right at the beginning of my ‘apprenticeship’ - Me and my mates attended a Soul Night at The Dog and Duck in Wellingborough, and basically my mates got out of hand. They were being ‘young and stupid’, generally messing around, including on the dance floor - I wasn’t (I never have ‘fitted in’) but I was well aware that their behaviour just wasn’t right, and I was also well aware of my ‘elders’, that were all around us….. It got to a ‘point’, and this older guy came over and really bellowed at the lot of us (I’m guessing we were too young for him to kick the out sh*t of) I was devastated by this, yet my mates (although quietened down a little) didn’t really seem fazed by it…..We all went to sit down, my mates still being loud and stupid, but I was really uncomfortable…..a short while past, then out of the corner of my eye I noticed this Guy coming over (Panic)……He gently put his hand on my shoulder and simply said….“Hey mate, relax I know it wasn’t you, it was ya stupid mates, you’re alright”, gave me a smile and walked off….It was something I didn’t expect, and had never experienced, and it felt good (although confusing at the time) ‘Part 2’ …….Fast forward a short few years, and I was D.Jing at The North Park in Kettering, it must have been one of the first spots I had done at a proper Soul Night, I was mainly D.Jing on the local Mod Scene at that time. It was a rough old place, as were most Working Men’s Clubs back then, and I can still remember the bar strip lights, that showed a ‘silhouette’ of people’s shapes as I walked in, clouded by the thick tobacco smoke….this was different…this was intimidating…….. My time came so off I went to D.J, and during my set I played ‘Curtis - How Can I Tell Her’….. not really the best choice for a Club like that at that time, and it kinda caused a ‘wave’ of grumbles (Ok, there was no ‘kinda’, it did - big time!) and lots left the dance floor…. inside I felt close to tears, but carried on (as ya do)……I still didn’t ‘really’ understand the Soul Scene……In the middle of my next record, this guy lent over the decks (not forgetting I was still ‘coming to terms’ with the ‘Curtis’ fall out) and shouted me over….”Here mate” (all seeming very aggressive to me)……”Was that Curtis you just f*ckin played?”……. (Oh gawd, I thought)…….”Yes” (I shouted as gruffly as I could)….I was dreading what he was going to say next…..he then reached across the decks, and shouted…. .“f*cking nice one!”….just as a really friendly smile appeared, that seemed to come from ‘deep inside’, shook my hand, and off he went…. .....In hindsight, he saw what had happened - he was someone that travelled, and wanted to acknowledge the said record - almost sticking his fingers up to those who didn’t appreciate it (The ‘60’s people against Modern’ thing was still raging at that time, so you can imagine how the ‘Boo Boo, Boo Boo’’s at the beginning of 'Curtis' went down, and they go on for a while!) ….. Anyway - Same thing - ‘it felt good (although confusing at the time)’ ……I ‘now’ know why he seemed aggressive / intense / with eyes that were ‘’locked’ on to me as he was talking - it was passion (amongst other things)…..I honestly think that was the first ‘Northern Soul Hand Shake’ that I had received - It all makes sense now! All the best, Len 8
Geeselad Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I enjoyed the programme. I was pleased the records shown were originals. Overall everyone put their points over well and honestly. The comments about the Northern Soul Scene being like the rave scene of the 90's i did not agree with. Bit like comparing a round of golf at St Andrews with pitch and putt at the park! The quality is totally different! you obviously know nowt about house music, you're right in some ways though, go compare 'cc Rodgers or Mass order to say, 'phillly dog around the world' or 'the peanut duck' Northern soul is obviously far more shallow and trite than house. But then again I'm prone to sweeping generalisations about a music scene I know nothing about, just like you. 1

pogo paul Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 (edited) 15 minutes was alright, the other was pure comedy! No mention of the 80s scene? Seems to me Wigan Casino was the death of the true underground movement, certain people mass marketed n. soul for their own ends, all the bull that went with that is back and whats left today. You didn't have to wear n.soul t-shirts or n.soul tats all over you to be into the music? and then the dancing, you do what you want, what did she say , you're missing one step? Everyone dressing the same doing the same dance, stick to line dancing Edited September 26, 2013 by pogo paul 2

Popular Post Ian Dewhirst Posted September 26, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 26, 2013 The comments about the Northern Soul Scene being like the rave scene of the 90's i did not agree with. Bit like comparing a round of golf at St Andrews with pitch and putt at the park! The quality is totally different! Please bear in mind the way the program was edited which didn't necessarily have time to deal with the complete context of all those sound bites. The point was that there has always been a parallel between fast music and the drugs du jour whatever the decade. Essentially most types of uptempo dance music since the 60's have generally had a drug of choice whether it was speed in the 60's and 70's, coke and E in the 80's, Ketamin in the 90's or MDMA in the 00's. So 70's Northern Soul = speed and late 80's House = E. The BPM and age group was essentially the same. That's not in any way trying to compare the music but rather the sociological circumstances. They could have used a lot of other stuff but they chose that which is OK by me. I never took drugs when I was into Northern Soul, but I was in the minority. Ian D 5
Guest Gogs Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 (edited) As many others have stated it was only a 1/2 hour long, but i enjoyed it, as did my Mrs and my son who even recognized most of the tracks played (not artists or labels,, but his favorite used to be Tommy Hunt- Loving on the losing side so he's not all bad lol)(wasn't going to add this but the wife's favorite is DILYIID but at least she has met Kenny and heard him playing it). i gave it 4/5. Popular Post Brent Posted September 27, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2013 (edited) Dear BBC Who was it in your vast bloated empire that thought last nights culture show was a good idea, What's to celebrate about the opening of Wigan Casino ? As a former members of the Drug Squad we can tell you there was nothing at all to celebrate "back in the day". Let us tell you what really happened. Hundreds of little toe rags from all over the country would descend on Wigan. They would burglarise all the chemist shops within a thirty mile radius before going to the all nighter. They would then abandon stolen cars all over Wigan before proceeding to nick another car for the journey home. We see no cause for celebration the thieving little bleeders should have been birched !!. Yours Sincerely Messer's Cream & Turner (ex Manchester Drug Squad) P.S. I'm surprised you didn't add insult to injury by featuring that B*stard Kegsy Dear Detective Constable Warmesley or " Cream " as you were known to your friends in Bolton K Division Being one of those " little bleeders" It Has Taken Many years to Find you .... I Have had a Mystery that i think you and your collegue Det Constable Turner may be able to shed a bit of light on...... You May remember that you busted me in 1974 with 50 Phenmetrazine Theoclate tablets ( FILON ) ....... How come when i got to court 45 of them had gone Missing ????? Yours....... Still Puzzled .... Popular Post SHEFFSOUL Posted September 27, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2013 well..i'll chuck my two penneth in..it had a resonance of the 1977 doc..in that it disappointed..sorry..(i remember feeling very disappointed in '77 when i watched this England air.).this was a decent effort but, every filmic attempt still has a comedy element..it reminded me at times of those awful rock n roll reunions where really old buggers still dressed like teenagers. No programme, film or otherwise has ever successfully managed to transmit just how cool it was to be into northern soul 1972-74 possibly 75.Any one not into northern can do a daft impression of a northern soul fan ( like flat caps and pigeons)..never the cool stuff..it was a decent effort and explains some of the complexities of NS especially to those who are unfamiliar , particularly americans..but always falls short. You need the arena production team to do it justice..highlights..Dave Withers, and the young souls..lows..the fancy dress aspect and i found the scottish girls comments way off the mark..Kung fu?..bollocks!!!..the dance moves came from UK hipsters imitating the soul performers of the 60's..(ps Searling always comes across well)..5/10...could do better.. 7

Guest chrislokeh Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Too many circle skirts They always seem to portray us like that, skirts and trousers its so far from the truth. But on a positive note Paul and Elaine showed the passion in Northern Soul

dedji1955 Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Like Brent I watched it and was entertained by it..I was against the filming and was at all 3 Nighters I know Pete and Sue and whilst we are not the greatest of friends there is no doubting the passion and love they share for the music, unlike lots of the keyboard warriors on Soul Source they are out every weekend at Soul Nights, dayers and nighters Whilst the comments on SS are uncalled for they where expected, what the hell have the clothes some of us choose to wear got to do with things and yet SS is obsessed with this fact I have heard comments like the young souls need to form their own identity. I know most of them and class them as my friends and they do have their own identity, anyone in doubt should visit The Black Bee in Manchester Some folks say they all dance the same, not true the variation in dance styles and dress codes is greater that it has ever been and anyone getting out n about would be aware of this People have questioned how long can the old souls dance for, visit The Twisted Wheel in Manchester where you will see some origianal Soul folks who have been on the scene since the 60s and are still doing their thing on the dance floor The programme was not perfect but was a lot better than expected, my biggest dissapointment was that it appaered to say you needed to be on drugs and working class white..I was Black when I went to the first Casino Nighter in 74 and still am I am 58 and from Wigan although it was not the first Nighter I went to and like most of you I am sick of hearing about The 40th Anniversaries, but not as sick as the relentless unwarranted attacks on people for the way they dress and the music they choose to dance to that appear constantly on SS Fred! 3
Popular Post Dave Rimmer Posted September 27, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2013 4 out of 5 from me. It's probably as good as you are going to get in 30 minutes. I know Pete & Susan, not well, but enough to know they are out there every weekend, so they are part of the 'Northern Soul Scene', just as I am. What they wear is irrelevent. Loved Paul Mason's depreciating humour, especially the bit where he was talking about the Soul night being full of overweight 50+ blokes, and then said actually, it isn't like that at all, but we can soon do something about that, and then walked in. The part where he had just come off the dancefloor was great too. How many documentaries have you seen where the presenter has tried to dance ? This guy had been DANCING, he was covered in sweat and out of breath ! Also thought the shots of him spinning in different places was classic TV. He obviously has done this programme as a labour of love, and spent time thinking about this show when he should have been doing other things. Soul music is like a virus that we were all injected with at the beginning of our teens. It may lie dormant for a while, but it's still there, and will reappear at some point in everyone's life. It never leaves you, and that is what I saw on TV, a guy discovering that the joy of listening to, and dancing to Soul music never goes away. 13
Dave Rimmer Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 I was Black when I went to the first Casino Nighter in 74 and still am Fred! Nice one Fred 1
Guest spikeybob Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Speaking as a (dread I say it !)) returnee to the scene, very much like Paul Mason. Up till 12 months ago I had been out of the scene for 30 odd years but after dancing for the last year, I can agree with all he said at the end. The music feels the same & the way I feel when I'm dancing is the same, just like it did 30 years ago. It wasn't the whizz the made it the "best night ever" . It was the people, the music, & the passion involved & I think the program did translate that to an extent, although I dreaded my Mum finding out about the drug side of it ! As it happens, as I work nights, she had seen it before I. I dropped her off some milk on my way home & waited for the backlash !!!! She looked at me & said "now I understand why you go to these soul nights, it all makes sense" She's 82 bless her ! So imho the programme has done some good as it has explained to the uninitiated just why we do it !!!!!!! If I hadn't returned to the scene, this programme would have made me want to. Maybe we'll see some old/new faces around because of it ? What with Elaines film coming soon as well, dance floors may get a bit busy. I give it 4 outta 5, just 'cos nothings perfect ! Bob
Winnie :-) Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 A couple of points. I agree with the part about the youngsters, but if they walked into a venue with their underpants showing over the top of skater jeans, they'd probably be viewed with suspicion, and almost definitely have the pi*s taken out of them. I don't wear 'the uniform' myself, and in the past I've been critical of those who do, but thinking about it for a moment, what are we supposed to wear and who decides? Trousers and a shirt? Jeans and T-Shirt? A mix and match. Can the shirt have a logo? It's a minefield, and if we've got to please the fashionistas before we begin to enjoy the night and the music, what chance have we got? 1
