Nothing cooler than watching old wheelers dancing, (nowt wrong with Ike & Tina either come to think about it), the fact that they've been doing it since before some of us had been born makes it totally legitimate from my point of view.

 

Same with Wigan and the anecdotes totally legit and likely to be encompassed in the program as joe public will be able to relate to it more readily.

 

The price of being part of an elitist, underground scene, with a beige fashion sense, largely unremarkable dance style and preoccupation with rarity over quality, is that it is likely to be overshadowed by the more flamboyant and more accessible variation from the previous era.

 

Not wishing to cause offence....point is that the cliched version will make better telly for the majority of the BBC audience.

The clip the BBC have up is of the Wigan young souls. I am cool with that, youngsters into it and doing their own thing is fine by me.....Only let down was that godawful Holly St James playing in the background.....Only one notch up from Paul Anka in the crapola list of shame

seen the clips and agree good to see the clips of the youngsters...and being youngsters i suppose they would wanna get into it all...the fashion etc

 

have a few younger regulars (but not teens) who have recently got into it at our night and they have the new range of fred perry with torch patches,baggy strides etc..makes me smile but i dont take the piss..its all new to them and i can remember the buzz of that..as for oldies doing it..as with the 50 year old skins/mods at scooter rally in air wair and combats or parkas covered in patches that only just fit..not a good look

 

as for the tv companies its the same when they film scooter rallies..still think its all about mods and rockers and only wanna film comedy mods with scooters full of mirros and lights over a soundtrack of my generation..lot more to scooterists than that

 

looking forward to the film though...sure it will be good...enjoying the book but to be honest as yet not read much i havnt read before in others already

The problem there though is that the man who is still playing Paul Anka is probably getting ten requests for it in every spot from the sheep, so what does he do, play to the crowd or play to himself?

I watched the BBC clip last night. It looked like Paul Mason really enjoyed himself.

This will be for Joe Public and not for the majority of us that have been on the scene for years.

I will watch it just for the entertainment value and not take it too seriously.

We all came and left this scene at different times so we all have different views of what the scene was or is like,and we will all never agree.

So let us all just sit back and be thankfully we all still have a scene for our age group and stop moaning about it.

Hi Pete, the comment wasn't aimed at any particular DJ (I happen to know and get on with the one you are probably thinking about), but you'll hear that fookin' record in 50 venues every week. It's a bad record, there's thousands of better ones, tens of thousands in fact. That's where the divs are, not some curious people that come along and try the scene out and see what all the fuss is about.

 

These days i put as much distance as I can between the "Teddy boy retro scene" with all its commercialism and cliches, and myself, but still enjoy the best of the music.

The last time I ever dj'd, and there's a reason why it was the last time as you'll see in a minute - I was playing Siky Hargraves, Natural Four and other well known but hardly common oldies, I was asked for Jimmy Mack (the song not the artist), Brainstorm, Because Of You and Nine Times Out Of Ten.  I didn't play any of them because I hadn't got any of them "what do you mean you have't got Brainstorm" (er, nobodys played it for 35 years you moron) anyway one guy kept asking and asking for Tell Me It's Just A Rumour Baby so I eventually borrowed it off someone else - and he didn't dance.  I had a very poor dance floor reaction and as I finished, the next guy put on Because Of You and rammed the floor and proceeded to play the commonest Motowns etc to a very busy dancefloor, I said never, ever again, and nowadays I just do my DJ sets via podcasts where it doesn't matter if people dance or not!

Well there is a lot of in fighting and bickering isn't there, there always has been.  Whether it's 60's vs Modern, original vinyl only vs pressings, retro baggy trouser fashions vs contemporary clothing - there's always going to be something that people bicker about.  The one thing that has never changed though, is the friendliness of the scene, and the way people are accepted straight away.
