MrsWoodsrules Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 What's the story with this record? Great record and I personally love it, just my opinion but I prefer it to Just A Boys Dream. But I see this was put out twice by Trudel, did this happen a lot? What would the reason for the label do this in those days? Just wondering is all?
Emjaygee Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Sorry it's Pretty Girl all the way for me, above either of those.
MrsWoodsrules Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 Sorry it's Pretty Girl all the way for me, above either of those. Don't apologise Emjay, it's just opinions. Obviously a great group, West coast? Anyways, I got me eye on one on those with Pretty Girl on evilbay at the moment, shame the one with JABD is way out of my price league, just wondered why the double release though?

Might be wrong cos its been a while since I last checked ,but isn't it the flip side to all three of their trudel 45's ? 2
Robbk Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Trudel seems to have been an L.A. label. So, I would guess that The Phonetics also came from there. The owners seem to have been Jack (Jac) Brown, Hankins and Gildon. Willie Hutch seems to have run the sessions, and done a lot of the writing.
Colsoul Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) yes but as nev says its on the flip of what good , making it 3, brilliant track also, col Edited September 12, 2013 by colsoul
Benji Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 (edited) West coast for sure. Isn't it Willie Hutch on vocals? Edited September 12, 2013 by Benji
Guest CapitolSC Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Yep Benji Willie Hutch on lead vocalsPretty girl for me as well but all good sidesAl H
Benji Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 @Al: Thanks for confirming that. Wasn't sure if I rememberd correctly because no one mentioned it before. IMO the best track they did was Just A Boys dream with What good am I coming in a close 2nd. Pretty girl nice too but by far not as good as #1 and #2. Didn't they also recorded a pretty weird track called "ghosts" or so?
MrsWoodsrules Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 West coast for sure. Isn't it Willie Hutch on vocals? Wow, never knew it was WH for Phonetics on vocal. The M&S of soul, a stamp of pure quality.

Popular Post neckender Posted September 13, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 13, 2013 What's the story with this record? Great record and I personally love it, just my opinion but I prefer it to Just A Boys Dream. But I see this was put out twice by Trudel, did this happen a lot? What would the reason for the label do this in those days? Just wondering is all? Here's a nice story concerning the Phonetics 45 on Trudel. Circa 1981, myself and tim ashibende arrived back from a US record trip with a bunch of 45s, which included a couple of hundred unknowns (unknown to us, that is) In there was a copy of the phonetics "dont love get you down" Not a bad record we thought, but not a record that was going to shake the Northen soul scene as it was then. Over the next couple of years we picked up a few other copies of that title and tried to flog them to various collectors. Dean Anderson was one such collector who showed an interest in a copy and I duly took it to various allniters where Dean frequented, hoping that he would relieve me of the 45. On various occasions, (luckily for me, as you will later understand) I was not able to get Dean to part with his money. One day later as I was sorting through the box of unknowns, I noticed that the copy that had been destined for Dean had a different flip side to the copy that I had kept previously. It had the title "just a boys dream" and had the release number, Trudel 1007/1008. Upon playing it and to my great surprise, I found that it was Richard S's old eddie holman c/u. I couldn't believe my luck and also couldn't wait to tell Dean what he had missed out on. Dean took the information in his stride and wished me well with the record. One thing it did remind me to do and that's always check out the flip side of every record that I buy. 9
