Totally agree. This just shouldn't happen and repeat occurences could well see support dwindling - as happened at another venue recently. Down to the promoter to call a halt to it. That said, when I dj'd I would sometimes clear drinking dancers off the floor using the mike - once had to get off the decks and do it face to face which was a pity but hey-ho. - Kev Edited September 8, 2013 by KevinKent 4 Link to comment Social source share

Popular Post Casper
if its a "soul night" then 99% of soul people will be there by 10.00 pm at the latest , with only the odd one who could not make it till late .. ( and they are probably known soul people and would be allowed in anyway) .. so 10.00 pm is a good starting point , it is also down to the people on the door who really should know who is who .. a promoter should man the door from start to finish to make every effort to control who is coming in , also with appointed deputies within the night to keep a check on how the night is running and possible trouble spots ... most of which would be removed at source with proper door managment .. for every drunk allowed in say goodbye to at least two true people next time ! pete 8 Link to comment Social source share
Steve S 60
Brought this up in a recent discussion "What Gives A Soul Night Direction - Punters Or Promoters?" (Post 74) and had a few responses including bringing in members only or ticket only nights. Personally I agree with closing the doors at a reasonable time (10-30 / 11 ish), as long as this is advertised on the flyers. 2 Link to comment Social source share

Popular Post Sammy Seaman
agree with the 10 30 ruling thats the policy we have at the venues i dj at (ksc nottingly)there are 2 very large gentleman on the door (trained)who do not let anybody who is the worst for drink, hence we now have no trouble with drunks who do not abide by our rules, the cost of the security should be incorporated in the admission charge, am sure nobody would moan at an extra £1 to know that they can enjoy there night without the hassle from drunks, 4 Link to comment Social source share

Popular Post ricticman
promoters point of view ; I've run a Soul night in Bridgwater for the last 12 years. It's only a pokey little night, but we've had to move at least once, because the original place was just too small to fit everyone in. But # 1 criteria in picking the venue was making sure it was away from the main town centre, and with loads of safe parking; ie so we never ever get any walk-ups once the pubs close. That and having a solid base of sussed up South west Soulies who would quickly sort out any numpties and berties who think it's all ok to come in an pratt about and potentially mess the night up. And if they don't sort it, then some of their blokes will ! pete 5 Link to comment Social source share
Casper
...and hey ho ,the camera doesn't lie when your posting pics of how rammed it was not always true .. depends on what time of the night the pictures were taken , if early then it can look a little sparse , where as later when in full flow the photographer may well have put their cammera away because its too crowded ... on the other hand a close cropped shot can lie too as it does not show the full picture so to speak ,so it can look full , but was not ... better to just tell the truth as a promoter , why lie? it serves no one and the people who were there and reading a comment know the truth pete 2 Link to comment Social source share

Back Street Blue
Remember a couple of the clubs that I really liked in the 90's both turned into "grab a granny" nights after the local non-soul folk twigged on to the late bar and "disco". Both were close to the centre of the town in each case and got to the point where we stopped going, no longer a soul night when dance floor full of d*ck heads and having to go toe to toe in front of the missus (when I always get a b*ll*cking whatever the circumstances). Not seen it much since then to be honest as the places I go are away from town centres and that's the key I think. Plus there's enough of the lads in attendance to put a stop to any bother if it did kick off. Edited September 9, 2013 by back street blue Link to comment Social source share
purist
Sometimes the landlord insists that you let " their friends/family/regulars" in for a late drink, as part of the agreement to book the room, and with the number of good rooms available shrinking all the time, maybe we just have to put up with it? Besides, I'm not sure I want a squeaky clean, sanitized, perfectly safe environment for the scene I attend? I dont drink alcohol so I'm not saying this from a point of need, but It was never thus, so why are we trying to change the rules part way through the game? Back when most Niters were soft drinks only, enough gallons of spirits were smuggled in to fill the Pacific Ocean Please don't "genteel up" a scene that has always been rough and ready. Virtually all clubs I've been to have their share of men who will resolve genuine difficulties if there's no paid security (which I agree with Chalky, should be on every door) I do like the idea of a large sign saying late admission/non members £ (followed by some inflated price), as that lets the door staff off any arguements. Cress I was not defending or justifying their actions just trying to answer the questions you posed. The behavior you describe was a lot worse than I ever seen there but just reinforces my view that no one would want to intervene to stop it as it would of resulted in a serious punch-up! The venue is a Miners Welfare club (a very famous one at that) and as such many of those causing the trouble would be regulars - even members - and probably feel they have more right to be there than bus loads from Middlesbrough or wherever. And with due respect to others who have posted , Easington is not Banbury! - It is officially recognised as being the most economically deprived town in the United Kingdom and has the largest percentage of long term illness and unemployment - it's a pretty rough place with not a lot to do on Saturday night after the pubs shut. As such I think it would be very difficult to 'police' the door and any subsequent trouble. Did any of you party attempt to remove any of the troublemakers? I know I would of got my coat and beat a retreat down the A19! BTW are you the Cress I met at the O'jays gig in Primm Valley in 2010? If your point is that the land lord is entitled to allow his regular customers to attend an event staged on his premises, I would agree that of course he and his regulars should be encouraged to do so. The problem is that some visitors can totally ruin an event, not 'cos they aren't into soul music or 'cos they are drinking and having a good time, the problem under discussion is that "drunks" causing bother, taking the piss out of dancers and the music, spoil it for the people who have come for a soul night ......and that's why the poster of the thread is asking why they are allowed in. Never been refused entry to a pub for being a soul boy and never likely to really am I, pretty unlikely scenario really innit? Take it you've got a downer on "local" events and venues too? Certainly comes over that way. Ah well, each to his own. Link to comment Social source share

Popular Post Soulie80
i run easington welfare soul. my name is bob armstrong,i am really sorry to hear about this... in 13 years of running easington, why did no one, who noticed these dickheads doing this, come to me and confront me.. and ask me to sort it out.. we run two rooms at easington, the main room & a modern room, i run the modern room, so i was out of the main room from 11 pm till 1am,,,there are three promoters, and we do the last spots in the main room..we come of the door at 11.30ish, i understand these arseholes came in after that, at that point , until closing at 1am there is nobody attending the door & we cannot close the main door as that is the only door to outside where you can have a smoke, and people leaving to go home.. i know the main problem, it is the welfare hall itself advertising in the local papers, so you get the local's coming in.. BIG MISTAKE.. and has been said on here, they are pissed up & asking for some proper music to be played.. ie maria carey or michael "fucking" jackson.. for all of you that have replied on here, that dont know where easington is, it is on the very tip of the north east coast, quarter of a mile off the sea.. the hall is massive & takes some filling, we have worked our socks off to get this place noticed on the soul scene, and have had all the biggest names on the scene playing here... also on here, some replies are, more in, more money in our pockets.. HOW WRONG CAN YOU BE, WITHOUT KNOWING WHO WE ARE!!!.. every penny we take on the door ( after paying dj's).. goes back to the welfare hall trust, to try and keep our magnificent welfare hall open,. we do it for the love of soul music, not pounds and pence., and also we do charity nites for cancer research, twice a year,& have also done "help for heroes" .. we set the sound up at 9am in the morning till 11am , arrange the seating, take the money on the door, dj in two rooms & put the sound system away at 1.30 in the morning & try to keep an eye on the night, for no finacial rewards, we dont always get it right.. we also do not ever put feedback on here saying, we had so many numbers in, ..."EVER" also their is one reply on here saying he noticed the same thing at easington, "WHEN", easington has been going for 12 years almost every month, or at least 8/9 times a month & i bet i can count on two maybe, three, fingers how many times he has been in those 12 years, think its called, jumping on the bandwagon, too willing to slag somewhere off, they have, really never been too... i am defending a soul nite i started 12 yrs ago, everybody who comes to easington is made as welcome as possible, at the door when they arrive by us the promoters, and because of one nite, and two to three dickheads , we are gonna close down, as someone else said on here, "NO WAY" we have nearly been there a few times, the hall has to run its self now, no contibutions from the coal miners, so we are doing our bit, soul wise, to help keep it going.. if you want to see us, and read some good vibes on easington & have a look at our venue.. face book us.. Easington welfare soul club... as i have said i have been running easington soul since 2001 & have only ever seen one fight in the place & that was two lass's fighting over a chair.. but as our scene, becomes more popular, isnt this gonna be more of a problem, if a few people are causing a bit of friction, tell the organisers, to sort it out & nobody informed me personally, .. if i dont see it or dont know, we cant sort it out... thanks to the kind remarks mike ,that have been said..& to all the people that turn up to our nite.. Chalky
The remarks I made about an extra tenner or whatever in the tin and sod security is generalisation and isn't aimed at you, how could it be I haven't been to your venue. But many many venues I have been to many promoters don't seem to care once you have handed your money over. No security, promoters paying no attention to what is happening inside, they treat it like the paying punters, as a night out. That is fact in many cases. If promoters just want a night out then they should pack the "promoting" in. If they want to promote then they should do it properly and provide a safe comfortable atmosphere and venue for those who have handed their money over.
