Hi guys,

Last time I asked for songs that were similar to Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up.

Now I'm after recommendations on songs that are similar to Archie Bell & The Drells - Tighten Up. I just love this song, but have actually never tried to look for similar sounds. I need something to break up my modern soul and disco sets, and this one works perfectly.

I know about 3 good latin cover versions of this song, but that's it. Any tips on similar sounds is appreciated!!

cheers,

Hans

Not similar but a cover version by REM. Don't let that put you off though as it's quite good & also quite scarce as it was only released on a giveaway flexi-disc with a magazine.

You could guess for a year and still never know who that was by unless you already knew.  Came out on cd about 20 years ago though not just on the flexi.

Also on a normal vinyl promo, I believe. ;)

Ton of Dynamite - Frankie Crocker

Watched a movie last night called Lovelace (about porno star Linda Lovelace), she does an interview with a certain DJ in New York........no less than Frankie 'Loveman' Crocker himself.

Also title track is superb, Gladys Knight I've Got To Use My Imagination from 1973, what a wonderful tune that is, presuming that'd be on Buddah around that time?

Anyways great track.

Film not bad, but sound track is good, think I caught an Eddie Kendricks track somewhere in there too, but forgot which one now, but could be wrong.

can I diverge? love the Yellow Magic Orchestra, this was the one to get when i was into the house scene.. used to get spun allot in the midlands at certain venues.. it was a regular play at Notes Bar in Birmingham city center..

On the subject of 'Tighten Up's' I know there are folk that collects every version they come across, but bar a few standouts, do we think if you have one you pretty much have em all?

Here's another nice version of the song, although I don't think the thread starter wanted to see lot's of versions of the song.

Maceo Parker. Notice that suddenly the song is written by James Brown.

I always thought this anthem from Keb's Sunday nights at Jo Jo's would work well on the Northern scene.

Tighten Up enough?

Flip of Bird Walking on All Brothers? The instrumental acetate of it is nice.

Tighten Up Tighter?
