Guest enchantedrythm Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 danced all weekend now time for play???? work maybe, comment yes, someone has to question. dont be coy give me the playlists
Citizen P Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 danced all weekend now time for play???? work maybe, comment yes, someone has to question. dont be coy give me the playlists If it is only the playlist of each you require perhaps it would be better to request in the respective lookbacks.. Your original post, however, appears to imply that these two particular sets were Scene defining in some way... still intrigued...
Steve L Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 danced all weekend now time for play???? work maybe, comment yes, someone has to question. dont be coy give me the playlists Who exactly do you expect to provide the playlists? Surely they will only come from the DJ's in question if they are minded to do so
Guest enchantedrythm Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 got one playlist coming from Dude, it on the whole shows how an hour spot with a little selection forethought can be both interesting, danced to, talked about amongst friends, different from the same dross and from someone who is fairly new to the public he was playing to. Excellent. the hour from Sean at Crewe however was one of the biggest loads of unrelated musical genres ive ever heard played, While the Latin pair goes ok, Most of the rest included discs that not only raised eyebrows amongst a large crowd but baffled some of our knowledged group to the point not knowing what to say. Sean ive heard many times in the past with nothing to comment on, this was very different, not good to the point of irrelevant for the northern scene and its crossover styles. This is a matter of opinion and taste but not an en masse silent vote. Somewhere in the midst was a track by connie L or van dyke that was great to hear, but an acquired taste item that shone in the middle of a waste of 45 mins cleared dance floor in an otherwise full dance floor throughout. Did we imagine or mass hallucinate?? Only the play lists would define the sheer depth of this for your own opinion. Hence the initial request. we expect to hear all things in many venues, but not time and time again in endless loops of repetition depending on the d.j in question, or the particular sound. Something must give here its become so predictable a lot of time that the music is becoming phased out in the soundwave sense. and meet ups, drinks, facebook's photo sharing becomes primary motive to forget the progression of a healthy music scene. BOOM!
Guest enchantedrythm Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Can I have some of what you're on ? you couldn't handle it
KevH Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Enchanted - get these play lists posted up.!! I'm curious to see Dude's spins, even more to see what SC cleared the floor with. If the lists are for you eyes only, how can anyone comment.?
Tezza Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 (edited) Sean had been out the previous night or 2 at a Ska/Latin/Soul mix night. Perhaps he hadn't come down from that experience by the time he did the Crewe few. So, basically, what you are saying is Sean played a shit set, or at least not to your liking along with some of the 'knowledgeable' ones ? Didn't go, cannot comment. You don't really need a Play list to confirm what you heard, unless you didn't go and you just need to see it to believe it ? You either loved it or hated it ( and a bit in between ). The same shit being played by same DJ's is nothing new and has been thrashed to within an inch of its miserable life on here numerous times and probably will be again. Someone coming along and playing something a little left field is great to see/hear and we must embrace it but not strangle it to the point they have to play the wierd and wonderful to enhance their reputation. Pat on the back for Dude, slap on the face for Sean, is that what you are saying ?? Edited September 3, 2013 by Tezza 2

Earl Van Dyke, Dick Van Dyke, The Van Dykes ? I do not see the relevance of a full floor being the sign of a great night. Anyone, and I mean anyone, can fill a Dance floor with the cheapest tackiest pieces of Northern Soul. Just stick on 1/2 dozen Motown tracks that always works. A lot of folk don't go to Dance, a lot of folk can't Dance any more or just can't Dance. They sit around and listen and appreciate. This is not a reference to what Sean played as I didn't hear it so .... You cannot get a packed floor when playing something a little different, they do not go hand in hand. Packed floor all night usually means, and I loathe to use the phrase, Top 500. Both ways ? Not gonna happen
Wiggyflat Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Is it Tick Tock he is talking about Connie Stevens...Sean plays a lot of mod style stuff ....Berts Apple Crumble The Quik,Sugar..Isonics...,Never Learned To Dance,I Like The Way You Move..Sammy Davis...Soul Dance number 3..... But maybe he played none of these ! 1
dedji1955 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Seans sets are so unpredictable and he loves to play latin style, whilst it is not my favourite gendre Sean always plays uptempo and I love his sets I heard him at Alterego and I was at The Coalville Nighter which was held at The Nottingham Irish Centre I did not attend The Box but it is a venue I love and I have no doubt Sean would provide his playlist The girls you refer to are as I'm sure youre aware Jackie, Joy and Debs from Derby and attend most nighters and are at Soul events all over the country every weekend Like others have said I'm curious about what you've been on Fred
Guest molly7989 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 hi there sharmo here on a different pc I'm not sure that I understand the nature of this thread or indeed the point.Enchantedrythm do you just need the two list to openly draw a comparison between both spots or something else Sir ?.For starters I've known Dude for over twenty five years and first encountered Sean at one of the early Prestatyne and was just starting to dj .I remember his top want being "Sitting in my class". to be fare we're dealing with two different djing situations Sean is one of the busiest and liked people on the scene , He starts to work as soon as he enters a venue by making notes of what's already been played and never knowingly plays a 45 no matter how good a floor filler that's already been aired. It's a truism that He may occasionally drop a little obscurity into the mix now and again and why not?.Sean Chapman can and does hold his own no matter where he is and ranks as one of the top oldies spinners in Europe and in addition is a very humble man to boot. Last Saturday he had a relaxing evening at the Spa in Derby and did the complete oppersite of his usual spot , which is exactly what we wanted him to do.I wasn't at the irish last Saturday so can't comment on Dude's spot he;s always been a professional type and does to be fare play to the crowd and as in the frame work of Sean appears to be a very nice chap.So here's a question for you Sean does around 200 gig's a year how can he be judged on one spot that was for a change a little different to his usual thing? Answer he can't .Let's not start getting involved in one of those who's got the biggest dinger arguments as to start with let's just say "Del Larks " ,"Eddie Parker " ,"Otis Lee" ect. They are two great guy's and respected members of the northern soul community so what's the big deal ? I hope this thread isn't a serious attempt on Seans reputation as either a dj or human being because that would be a great injustice and wouldn't be fare . to be honest with you Sir you've actually put both Dude and Sean on the spot by doing this , so let's see the dj lists then , and let the thread unfold best regards Simon.
dedji1955 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Spot on Simon regarding Sean. Ive witnessed him on a regular basis taking notes on whats been played Ive also been at The Box whilst Sean has been DJing and he his given more freedom than most oldies venues and has always played brilliant sets
Spacehopper Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 seans playlists being talked about again!..no such thing as bad publicity mate playing the same old or mixing it up a bit..seems like youre damned whatever you do nowadays dean 3
Popular Post Pete S Posted September 4, 2013 Popular Post Posted September 4, 2013 Seems to me someone enjoyed one spot but didn't enjoy another - big deal - why the fuss? 4

Also, would be useful for you to just say what your own opinion is, rather than everyone having to speculate on what you mean. Thread reads a bit like ... "Do you want to know a secret?" ... "Yes please!" ... "Well I'm not going to tell you!". Richard

I've heard many a set that 'on paper' would read pretty average and yet on the night worked really well 1

Anais nin Carms Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 (edited) I find it a tad tiresome when a Dj gets knocked on this forum for playing what he believes in ... its quite simple if you don't like what he plays don't go and listen , at the end of the day its your opinion and you are entitled to it , you paid your money , next time make your choice from your experience . To demand his playlist so that you can ridicule his "bravery" in play is not going to score you any browny points on here my friend... Sean has many followers that like that style of play , you only have to look at the floor to see that is quite self evident. Edited September 6, 2013 by Anais nin Carms 2
Kev John Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 (edited) If Sean wants to break out of the OLDIES scene now & then i personally can't fault him at least he's showing Imagination & belief in the records being played !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm Gone Kev Edited September 6, 2013 by DjAKA 1
Guest enchantedrythm Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 nothing to do with oldies, newies atc. Please post the play lists. Its to do with Soul vs crap. Im not knocking anyone. yes its all been said before. yes im banging my head on a brick wall. it was something that really stuck out in my mind last weekend. Ive been here before as early as Soul Source Record Magazine days when the politics of the soul scene were first bought into print. It will always be an issue. Seans spot was not an advert in any way or form for a progressive way forward, it was a delve into second rate pop that had some sort of beat. On the other hand Dude played a set that consisted of obscure known records that were mainly "Soul" and worked in my opinion. The nuneaton nighter a couple of weeks ago also included a fair number of records (trickster in fact) that were known but not to the general crowd, that i would class as more obscure soul records. The bulk of which were danced to by many who im sure had never heard before. I was so taken aback by the quality of Seans spot that to not let my opinion be known would have been folly. I love my/our scene, and as such, need to comment on what i hear. It seems to be that a lot of people out there have no politics regarding play lists/spots etc and if the sound fits then its soul in their opinions, or must be, on this occasion it was b****ks. Play lists please!!!!

Guest enchantedrythm Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 dont think that a set that worked is the question. ive heard stupid sets fill a floor, its all about the SOUL!
