Gary Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Came home from work yesterday and my youngest came up to me very excited and said "Dad, ive got you one of them Motown records you like!". He'd been to a second hand shop. Anyway, its Ben by Michael Jackson Now, i have always vowed never ever to own this record. So heres the dilemma, do i hurt my lads feelings or do i hurt the record? Yep, the record was smashed into pieces. What records, motown or otherwise, would you refuse to own?

Yep, the record was smashed into pieces. What records, motown or otherwise, would you refuse to own? ============== Awwww that's mean, 'Ben' is a lovely record When you say 'otherwise' I take it you're referring to anything with a soulful leaning as opposed to say, The Nolans? If you do mean soulful only, most of the instrumentals that have great vocal versions already in existence. Those awful things that Chris King turned up spring to mind. Winnie:-)
mischief Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 I was once told the B side to Ben was ok .. never heard it so don't know.. if its pants its only what i was told...if its really bad Col the Soul told me.
Winnie :-) Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Frank Wilson =========== Do you actually dislike the record Baz? Or would you not own it cos of it's price?
Guest Baz Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 =========== Do you actually dislike the record Baz? Or would you not own it cos of it's price? Both, overpriced pop IMO

chrissie Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Charlene - I've never been to me But I took the sweet life, I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free Hey lady...... I've been to paradise, (I've been to paradise) But I've never been to me What is that all about , I also vote it as the worst lyrics ever on motown QoFxx
Winnie :-) Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Both, overpriced pop IMO =========== Each to their own, massive in it's day, massive now and great northern soul IMO. Rarely dance to it cos it's been played to death, and you can never get on the floor when it's on anyway, but still like it

What next, burn The 500 top records book cos you don't like it? Poor Kid

Guest Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Dont want to get in a massive debate about it Win But i dont see it as Northern Soul Please dont make me explain why Oh Baz, how on earth can you say DILY isn't NS Of course it is, basic northern in my opinion, maybe played to much and you may not like it but that doesn't stop it being what it is.
Dave Moore Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Came home from work yesterday and my youngest came up to me very excited and said "Dad, ive got you one of them Motown records you like!". Yep, the record was smashed into pieces. What records, motown or otherwise, would you refuse to own? Kinnel! My wife would have roasted by balls if I'd ever thought of doing something like that! Come to think of it......I wouldn't have ever thought of doing that to my kid! Im stunned! Unless of course this is a wind up. You married? Regards, Dave www.hitsvillesoulclub.com
Winnie :-) Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Dont want to get in a massive debate about it Win But i dont see it as Northern Soul Please dont make me explain why ============= As I said Baz, each to their own, but when you consider some of the things that have been played, Joe 90, Keep on running, Hawaii 5-0, Goodbye nothing to say etc etc etc, I personally think it's difficult to call it pop. As Karen said, its overplayed, but that's all IMO Winnie:-)
Guest Baz Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Suppose i'd better explain myself then I wouldn't say it was pure pop that was a bit of a wind up (remeber the thread a few weeks ago) to me its tacky northern 'pop', every one has a vision of what constitutes northern soul to them, and sorry in my vision FW aint there nor will it ever be, Frank Wilson is as bout as underground as a bloody Boeing 747
Gary Posted June 8, 2006 Author Posted June 8, 2006 (edited) Gary, why do you say "Yep, the record was smashed into pieces" as if we would all agree with you?
