Met too many artists over the years to drop names, but Edwin had to be number one.
Guest Dan Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 (edited) Hi Dan, I have been in touch with George's Daughter over the last couple of years, had a few Pyramid's off her and some great publicity shots of the group, but she was hard work regarding her Dad, not sure what sort of relationship she has with him. Met too many artists over the years to drop names, but Edwin had to be number one. edited a bit, thought better sent as a pm i think she may be one of those people who doesn't trust people easily. i think she's OK though, and probably had her dad's interests at heart. Markw Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Smokey Robinson played St Davids Hall, Cardiff in October 1992. Got back stage to meet him. A real gentleman, meeting and greeting a queue of about 30 people, signing his book, chatting. Totally awesome to be shaking hands with and standing in front of a true musical legend and one of the biggest singer-songwriters of all time. Wow!!
jocko Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 A few years ago at Poretta (actually held in Bologna if I remember rightly this particular year for some reason) soul festival, after a few beers and some sun blagged our way backstage, something I would never dream of, to speak to the Sweet Inspirations, asked who was Sylvia Shemwell, as wanted to say loved her solo single, only to be given the sad news she had a stroke and was too ill to travel, at this stage the 3 of them were looking like they were scared of these mad Englishmen (didnt get into UK geography) and they said wearily "I suppose you saw us on the Elvis video" and me and my mate at the same time said "F**k Elvis, we know you from Aretha and your solo LP's", After describing their dresses on one of their LP's they took us seriously, whooped with delight and spent an hour telling us great tales of their days on the road with a number of soul stars. Great experience. Jock

Cover-up Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 I felt like a bit of a twat after meeting the diminutive Evie Sands - my mind went blank and all I could blurt out was "I'm a really big fan". She looked up and agreed, "yes, you are, aren't you!" We still email from time to time, lovely lady and a truly great voice...
slimharpo Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Etta James in New York Fantastic Jackie Wilson in Colwyn Bay! Got his autograph on a Coral EP Ben E King - just before Supernatural Thing in St Asaph Top Man Johnny Adams Ruth Brown Lavern Baker in Liverpool - wonderful act & person Ray Pollard Keith Richard! in a small club in Greenwich Village - another Top Man - just like one of the lads
Stateside Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Had a drink and my photo taken with Martha Reeves in the restaurant at the Philharmonic, Liverpool before she did her act. John Peel bought me a pint and we talked football and music when I was at a mutual friends 60th, but the best thing that has ever, ever happened to me bar none, was to spend a day in a friend's recording studio with Lamont Dozier producing Terri Walker in 2004 on one fantastic track that has yet to be released and then going out for an Italian meal with both of them and asking them all the things you ever wanted to ask and him signing all my albums and getting loads of photos to prove it. The worst thing was having to explain to non soulies who Lamont Dozier was!
Monique Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 Not soul related but when we checked into our hotel on holiday in Florida a few weeks ago we were standing right next to the Beach Boys waiting to be taken to a concert. More like the beach men now though !!!

Gene Chandler / JJ Barnes & Eddie Holman at same weekender. Ray Pollard when chatting to him seemed quite humble. Recognising Gwen Dickey at Heathrow airport (to her astonishment) and having coffee - lovely woman. Squeezed inside Mary Wilsons dressing room (with two VERY gorgeous backing singers) backstage at Rooftop Gardens , Wakefield (Ah the high life..) ATB Rich

I saw them too, in exactly the same place on my honeymoon a few years before that with the simply delicious Marolyn (we are still married ). Naturally, there was the usual holiday high spirits but the two of us were in awe of the stunning performance we saw (nudge, nudge). Got some pictures somewhere......... Thanks for reviving the memory mate! John.
Guest 2648 W Grand Boulevard Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Not as lucky as some have been in meeting their hero's but seeing Otis Williams in the Motown shop at Detroit Airport in July last year was a highlight of the our US trip. According to the missus I looked like a guppy out of water when I worked out who he was. I managed a few words but was very diplomatic as both he and Ron Tyson had just come from Obie Benson's funeral service. Made the missus happy when he signed an autograph dedicated to "My Girl Gill" Managed a chat with Kim Weston in Worksop and got her to sign a CD cover for me at her recent concert. Thanks to Mr & Mrs Wigley for setting that one up.

Craig W Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 Here you are Craig for all historians out there. contains the brilliant line"does the sun wait for you to open up your eyes before peeping through your window" Decent voice but just far too modern for me Ted. I'll get back to dinosaur land then.
vaultofsouler Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 (edited) Here you are Craig for all historians out there. contains the brilliant line"does the sun wait for you to open up your eyes before peeping through your window" Lyrically fantastic throughout Ted IMO .... others lines like.... Can I reach out and touch your face or will you disappear again like in my dreams.... I know you know I know you noticed me and I'm so afraid my heart out there for you to see.... Do you hear the voices in your soul telling you your in control, I hear them too, but I have never known such mystery these feelings are so new to me... Not forgetting the "horns breaking in" and the "flute building up to the screetching bit".... Quality record throughout.... Decent voice but just far too modern for me Ted. I'll get back to dinosaur land then. How can a modern track be "far too modern" Craig .... I thought a modern track was, well, just modern .... or is it the fact that some people are now declaring 70's as modern albeit they're 30 years old .... That's a first for me mate with that one .... p.s. hope your well and will no doubt see you at the Derby alldayer again .... Edited June 11, 2006 by vaultofsouler

Also seen Edwin Starr live but was dad who managed to go and meet him a truly Motown legend. Hope i get to see Dean Parrish next week Been lucky enough to meet and chat to many a Northern Soul star. Sexiest without a doubt was (is) Leola Jiles of the Apollas, well fit, got pissed with her and her brother. Top professional and great fun. Most wanted to stangle were the Three Degrees - bunch of stuck up tarts who still think that being Prices Charles fav group is like worth something. If you meet Ralph Tee ask about them in Amsterdam Most "I'm about to die cos I do drugs" was Bobby Sheen, smashing bloke when normal, absolute weirdo on crack (suppose everybody is) he showed us his Capitol record recording timetable, boy what a piece of history that is. I met and spent time with all the Spellbinders, Chris Bartley & The Ad-Libs, the most wonderful people you'll ever meet. They can't stop singing, no matter where they are, I want to marry them all. Sid Barnes, Brenton Wood, Fred Smith, The Tempos all very nice people, the sort you're like to have an all weekend bar-b-que (ne cookout) with. Perhaps the most impressive by far is Arthur Wright, whilst not exactly a singing star, although he does perform, is awesome........his tales of Okeh, Motown, Jerry Cooks, Sequins, Little Richard, etc keep you sitting on the edge of your talcumed dancefloor. Very humble bloke, soft spoken, snazzy guitar player. In fact when I look back most are pretty decent kinda people, maybe because they never attained superstardom............that's how we like 'em.
