I was talking to an old Cockney House DJ of some repute the other day and he was stating his view that as everyone is now a DJ, it is cooler not to be one these days as there are so many 'newbies' doing a poor job that it has dragged the whole 'profession' down.

 

Someone mentioned that 'some have it and others never will'...

 

...to which he replied (spinning the whole point of the conversation on it's head) 'that's not the problem these days, the problem is no one on the dancefloor cares anymore!'

 

I see his point in a way, with an ever ageing and socially developing group of scene-people attending - or not as the case may be, it's bound to head that way.

 

I always read people talking about the 'Oldies' crowd and as Roger so lovingly called his dancefloor crowd in another thread the 'something we all know brigade'.

 

But is the problem with the dancefloor or the dj's?

 

Or is there a problem at all?

 

Can we not just accept that majoritvely thathungry element of our scene has shrunk to a degree that everyone is pulling in more of the 'Oldies' or the 'SWAK Brigade' and that's now the state of play?

Looks to be a bang on assessment to me.

 

Those that claim to support original vinyl and lesser played nights need to ACTIVELY support these nights, cos Once they're Gone..They're Gone !!

 

Oldies nights seem to rule the roost because the lines have now been so blurred between the original Rare (Northern) soul scene and the commercial soul scene that nobody can tell the difference. .I call these Northern Nights for folk that never went anywhere..

Like I've said before any body can buy a box of CDs.or 100% vinyl (whatever that is) and run a PROFITABLE night playing to this NOTstalgia crowd-You can't be nostalgic for something you never had-

Even this lot are not satisfied, on a recent lookback somebody listed a set of solid dancefloor favourites but had the temerity to also list what labels they were on, he was accused of playing the politics game--Frack me.

 

He's playing sounds we all know, used to be an accusation not a plaudit...
