Guest cmp Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 (edited) I found this white label 12" in San Francisco today. It seems to be a different (much longer than the 45) version of Eddie Kendrick's "Date With The Rain" (typo in title). The record itself doesn't reveal much info other than having the same matrix # as "Brooklyn Express - Are You Ready on BC '79". Does anyone know what this is? Roburt Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 (edited) As you found it in Calif, probably a 12" remix version pressed up in limited quantities and sent out to a few select radio DJ's. If it had been played by a couple of those radio DJ's & it had taken off with their listeners, it would probably have gained a 'true release' as a Motown 12" Disco Single. The other side of the 45 ("Born Again" - 54285) was put out on a Motown 12" Disco single but it was coupled with "Tailgate" from 21st Creation (#0006). Edited August 18, 2013 by Roburt
The Yank Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 That's definitely not Eddie Kendricks singing. It also doesn't sound like the version by Frankie Gee, Arnie's Love or Jamie Principle .
Ernie Andrews Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 THeir was also a 12" EK Date with Rain on motown backed with a Diana ross dancer.
Sutty Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 There is no legit 12" of Eddie Kendricks 'Date in the rain", it was a 7 and album track from 1972, there were no 12's in 1972. The one with Diana Ross is a bootleg, basically the song repeated with some thunderstorm sounds dubbed on.
Daved Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 It's quite good though, isn't it? As long as it isn't a re-edit that's killing the scene 1

Epic Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 The American 7 inch although recorded in '72 did not get an official release until 1976.

Guest cmp Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Thanks for the input. I don't think that this record was recorded/released in 1972/1976 either. Just wondering if this is an authentic/legit EK remix or if this was done by someone else. I can't tell and can't find anything online. Certainly not a bad version of "Date with the rain"...much better than the recent 9 minute Motown re-edit for sure. As mentioned, it has the same cat.# as "Brooklyn Express - Are You Ready?" on BC Rec.'79 (https://www.discogs.com/Brooklyn-Express-Are-You-Ready/release/1541056). Not sure if this is a coincidence or if this was supposed to be a release on this label, but never worked out for whatever reason.
Barry Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I have no sound here but it's not any of the Jamie Principle mixes is it?
