JOE TORQUAY Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Rubin You've Been Away What was Wigan Casino like in 1974? Just click the sound file.. to take your senses on a trip to a steamiest Club sensation of the 70’s decade. The focal point for a Saturday countrywide pilgrimage to Lancashire to dance all night on cocktail adrenaline, amphetamine & sheer enthusiasm created explosive dancefloor detonators such as this one! Rubin take it away …. THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL! Condition of vinyl, labels & company sleeve is irreproachable! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 372.00 Lloyd Williams I'm In Love With You C/w Little School Girl UK Northern Soul on a highly collectable UK Reggae label! First thing you do when encountering British Ska or Reggae is hold your breath whilst removing it from the sleeve and just hope that your find has not been “danced on” or “Slept with the Pet Cat” - most are in scratchy condition with labels torn or wrote upon. As you can see this rare ‘un has two near perfect labels, and the vinyl is in extremely pleasing condition also. Just two very light insignificant surface, otherwise Mint - . So click the sound file to reveal a delicious mid-tempo soul groove from the Coxone studio. C. S. Dodd skilfully steers this beauty with a blend of heavy duty strings and subtle hammond keyboard swirlings and a masterful lead vocal. Clement then adds heavenly girls that hover unobtrusively in the air. Creating an entirely delicious piece of music that creeps under your skin and into your heart. Jamaican SOUL at it’s best! … the flip of course is Reggae and good Reggae at that.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 120.00 Miracles Hi We're The Miracles the highly sought after 1963 British press with laminated cover. The Miracles very first UK album release with back cover notes explaining to the unaware British record buying public; exactly who The Miracles are, how they were formed. the cover notes I found remarkably modest as this group were enjoying worldwide recognition after their monster hit “Shop Around”. Interesting is the undocumented on the WWW is the St. Louis concert riot caused when a full house and a lock-out had to be quelled by Police & dogs as fans tried to gatecrash the show. Pieces of information like that is why 60s albums are so appealing, fabulous pop-art fronts, high quality notes, laminated covers, flipback sealed and altogether historically tactile. This album is so tough to acquire, most-all have long been snared and filed in the finest record collection in the UK by the mid 60s. Now rarely coming to market especially in fine clean condition like this is. Vinyl has only the occasional fine light hairline surface blemishes, as you can hear, NOT affecting play. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 411.00 Lena Junoff Yesterday Has Gone It’s that man and his able assistant being covered yet again. Teddy Randazzo & Victoria Pike’s song that Little Anthony recorded so beautifully and te English group “Cupid’s Inspiration” had a smash hit with a worthy rendition. But this is the rarest, least heard, seldom seen female take on this great song. The one that the serious about British rare soul are chasing…on a mysterious 13 release UK label that very few, including me know too much about, other than it is one of the most-colourful eye-catching 60s Brit-labels you could ever wish to witnessed, and the late great Roy Castle had a release on it too! This copy has two pristine labels and vinyl to match & 100% British press with the OLE prefix, as apposed to the SOH prefix used by the Olga label in the Netherlands and of course this copy has the “Made In Great Britain” text on te left hand side. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 31.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 J. D. Abram & The Handicappers Let Me Tell You What I Want C/w Doctor Of Love A double helping of thumping Los Angeles, Northern Soul. “Doctor Of Love” received some strong Top Of The World - Stafford, turntable action in the early 80s, so what a pleasant surprise to hear the much better flipside for the first time recently, why I’d passed this solid dancer by in the past I just can’t explain, because it is a glaring drop of the “good stuff” The “overlooked” flip is a fusion of Soul & Garage sprinkled with moody bluesy undertones. Tricky intro is the signal for J. D.’s rich vocal to weave a mean and dirty track through this haunting tune, enriched by unobtrusive hammond wailing’s,, with a down-right sensual sax gently purring away away adding another layer to this tapestry. A defiant guitar break and the whole thing gels together, into a disc you need to drop the stylus on more than once. In an era where “grungy” 60s dance tunes are in vogue, this one sits right up there with the very best. The better know “other” side is of course a Stafford-cult item that has been ridiculously hard to secure for over 3 decades now.. Two strong sides, giving a mix of rare-classic to potential Monster newie.. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 297.00 Marvin Gaye Pride And Joy 1963 UK original is just stunning condition. Exactly how you fastidious British Motowners like it - original company sleeve, two Mint - labels and vinyl I’m struggling to find fault with. The second of his two only Oriole releases before Motown jumped ship to EMI and Marvin was launched on the Stateside label. Personally out of all Tamla Motown British releases I find the Oriole’s the most tempting - in this condition utterly imperative. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 92.00 Garnett Mimms As Long As I Have You - Lp Has this song, overtaken “Looking For You” as Garnett’s most wanted Northern Soul offering? We think it has. Never issued as a single in the USA but re-recorded in 1967 in the UK featuring British R&B band The SENATE for the backing track and issued on British United Artists 1186. Tak a listen to the difference on this 1964 original take, 3 years earlier using a New York studio band directed by the writer. This original 1964 New York session arranged & produced by the highly accomplished Jerry Ragovoy is a spectacular Northern Soul dancer only available on vinyl this rare album or on an insanely elusive the French 4 track EP. At this moment we’d venture to say this is a Northern Soul DJing essential, and this example is in as good a condition as you could ever hope to own. For those of you who appreciate Mr. Mimm’s magical vocal, the other 11 tracks ripple with the same unbridled passion that “Cry Baby” was drenched in. Unlining that the pairing of Jerry Ragovoy & Garnett Mimms was a studio marriage made in heaven. Condition is heavenly too, not a blemish on the label or the cover. With both sides of the vinyl flawless also. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 150.00 Willie Tee First Taste Of Hurt C/w Funky Funky Twist The likelihood of ever acquiring the blue label first take of this superb slab of soul is so very remote; that the green label remix of this captivating New Orleans gem is now realistically the only way to own it. Willie Turbinton embraces the keyboards inviting in the horns, then the distinctive “…One Way Street” vocal we all grew up with glides into the arrangement in his easy-going signature style. Willie Tee’s exacting lyrics tell the story of a man who is different from the other men this lady has messed around, Willie’s gonna put her down, so she should get ready for your “First Taste Of Hurt”. Soulful poetry that couldn’t have easily been delivered with anger and revenge in his voice, but no it’s served up with cool calculated indifference and a whole lotta soul. Just like every tune this man has recorded, this is class, pure class that is rising value and falling in availability. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 203.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 Contacts You Gonna Pay C/w Why Little Girl Rare as rocking horse poo - A PROMO COPY! Apparently this was covered-up as the Silhouettes? I’ve had a long think about this pulsating piece of Northern Soul which I personally discovered in the late 70s and played at Cleethorpes All nighters, my aged brain doesn’t remember playing it covered up - but I do remember that this pumping tune never quite hit classic status due to a premature and needless poor sound quality bootleg, but has since over the decades grew in reputation and demand. Not only as a Northern soul rarity but also as a Sweet Soul trophy for the masterpiece that sits on the flip. Having found and played the first copy of this 45 that hit the turntables within breathing distance of that persistent cold draft from North Sea, it actually focused me even harder to discover unknown gems on weird and wonderful label, that I’d personally never experienced before in those naive days of discovery back in 1977/78, not hard to do as this label as you can see, sticks out like a sore-thumb amongst you 1000’s of major label we had to trawl through back then. Spectacular street level soul from 1971 that delivers on BOTH sides. Vinyl has a couple of light surface marks but play clean & true. Both labels are clean, with a USA lead side sporting that coveted “D.J. PLUG” rubber stamping! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 236.00 Twisted Wheel Mail Shot The Twisted Wheel - Members Mailshot 31 July 1969 As the day it was mailed out from Manchester 31 July 1969 this 4 part statement is in perfect condition and just steeped in Northern Soul history. We think the four pieces all speak for themselves, even the naivety in the artist spelling on the “forthcoming attractions” mailer just adds to the mystique of a club that never skimped on the acts they presented; just imagine an Autumn’s night watching Carla Thomas walk the stage. The “10 bob” to get in summer offer catches the eye, most MODS had left for the seaside..plus a debut item for our auction in the form of a “free pass” to it’s sister club in Blackpool with a street map on the reverse. Cast iron 100% provenance is validated by the franked 2nd. class postage marked envelope. Northern Soul memorabilia doesn’t get any finer than this 4 part offering. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 39.00 Knights I've Got The Feeling C/w Forgive Me Northern Soul vocal group excellence in it most attractive clothes. An eye-popping presentation of one of Northern Soul’s most alluring of labels, complete with the seldom-seen company sleeve! A short tinkling piano intro the Thwack! We are straight into stomping Northern Soul led by a warbling rasping lead, relentless harmony group back-up, hard drum rhythm shows little remorse for pushing the high-powered dance-beat forward, then the crazed pianist has his moment of fame with a jaw-dropping instrumental break. Proper-raw street level vocal-group Northern Soul with guts. But do not whatever you do overlook the flipside, an emotive slab of vocal-group Deep Soul straight from a foolish heart! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 271.00 Beverley Ann You've Got Your Mind On Other Things Beverley Ann maybe a vivacious blond bombshell… But BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL when it comes to this Wigan Casino anthem. One of the very most difficult ones to apprehend.. We know beauty is in the eye-of-the-beholder - but is anything more admirable than a run of Black RCA’s imprisoned inside the Northern Soul record room, we assure you many RCA’s addicts will have this one missing. Condition is impeccable! Food for thought, if your one of the NS bigots who don’t collect “white” artist recordings; remember this is yet another stunning “Jimmy Wisner” session. Jimmy “The Wiz” had the studio-power that could’ve transformed Ken Dodd into James Brown…maybe? Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 476.00
JOE TORQUAY Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 Willie Johnson What I'm Going To Do (without Your Love) C/w It's Me A record with that rare quality of making all your murky troubles and woes become crystal clear, as Mr. Johnson voice convinces you, he is a man who has seen harder times than anyone who may be listening to this great work. REAL SOUL is about to enter your life. Topside is a beautifully constructed early 80s Georgia dancer, starts with heavenly girl vocals decorating a string driven dance production, with Willie’s vocal snoozing away in the background, then he lets loose with that colossal voice, the contrast of the two is a heady cocktail mixing dance music with a tortured soul. Flip it over and you about to experience, I kid you not, one of the greatest soul recordings ever made. Again the girls relax the atmosphere so Willie Johnson can stroll into the arrangement and slowly but surely tear your heart from your chest with his palpable pain coating very note. Willie Johnson you are just an awesome soul artist right up their with the very greats of all time, this record proves that fact. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 77.00 Grover Mitchell What Hurts Len Barry Philadelphia 1976 session with the most-soulful under-recorded Grover Mitchell was missed by everyone at the time. WOW what a cracking slab of 70s Northern Soul Len & studio partner Sherman Marshall created. Take a listen to this uplifting dancefloor-pleaser. and gaze upon the perfect image of flawless DEMO still snugly wrapped in it’s original birth-sleeve. Irresistible! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 141.00 Jimmy Andrews Big City Playboy Let’s get serious! You are viewing the New York Big City Sound Of Northern Soul in it’s VERY RAREST FORM. From the desk of the Herb Bernstein a man who’s reputation for the full production is recognized both sides of the Atlantic. With regular brainstorming studio sessions with the likes of Bob Crewe, Gary Knight, Charlie Calello, Bob Gaudio etc. Herb’s name on the credits virtually guarantees a top quality tune. This listing is easily the rarest example of his work, typically mountainous lead vocal is fully backed by an uncredited male vocal who literally scream & shout out the choruses, as all vocalists push n’ shove to outweigh those blaring horns. When it comes to punchy big productions from the East Coast this is most-elusive and we are not ashamed to admit this is our FIRST copy in over 43 years of messing around with rare soul! There are not too many Northern Soul 45s that can boast of making a debut appearance in our stock. An ultimate rarity of it’s type…in fine clean condition. Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 2,216.00

pikeys dog Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Ouch! Looks like I sold the UK Grover Mitchell too cheap a while back...... Ian D Real world price on that is less than half what Johns auction achieved.
Dave Rimmer Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I really, really, really, really would have liked that Jimmy Andrews, and I was half tempted to spend my holiday money on it. I then tried persuading Jessica to buy it for me, I mean, if she really, really loved me she would, wouldn't she ! I didn't expect it to go for quite that much, but worth every single penny as far as I'm concerned ! In the end, I'm just going to have to listen to it on CD at home, and keep requesting it from every DJ i know who has a copy. So, can the buyer please make themselves known to me if they are a DJ, so that I can hassle them with a request every time I hear them DJ. (Unless of course it is Jessica that has bought it for me, and then you can hassle me for requests every time I DJ ) 1
Pete S Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Real world price on that is less than half what Johns auction achieved. Correct, £60 to £75 usually

Ian Dewhirst Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Real world price on that is less than half what Johns auction achieved. Yep, I guess so. To be fair I had it on my shelves for 30 odd years but it always sounded not quite right somehow. I've forgotten what the flip of this was....."I Feel She Doesn't Want To Do It" or something? For me, that was the better side..... Ian D

I wouldn't have Jimmy Andrews at any price personally. 1
Pete S Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 bet the lena junof seller s a bit pissed off... Why would anyone auction something like that anyway, most British collectors have got it and the rest don't want it!
Reg Scott Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Dr of love since when has it been £297 gosh Agreed.
