I was going to post this tape up but I've decided not to as it's riddled with some of the worst music I've ever heard played at Wigan, someone earlier was saying how dreadful Leon Young Strings "Glad all over", a 1973 play, was - and he was right - but it's surely nowhere near as bad as Larry Houston "Lets spend some time together".  In my opinion.  Anyway nearly every track on here is covered up, I know most of them but some of the modern ones I've no idea.  Also on this tape, the Casino sounds as if there are about 12 people in there.  It's really, really sad.

Yes it is Harry, it had a picture sleeve, I  knew it was that but couldn't think of the artist or title!

I'd have to disagree. It was at a time where things were a changing as far as the music goes. There some great tunes in there, even the "modern" stuff. As far as I'm concerned there was much more dross played before hand

The Brainstormers

I thought it was just Brainstorm?

Someone once said, I think, this also covered as Leon Ware, I can't remember this but then I didn't realise so many of these were played in 79, given the stick they were getting when I started in 80 I thought they were all pretty new.

Stop being a bloody drama queen Pete, get it up, lots of good music even for you on there, and the rest you can put on silent.

JD Moore is Marvel Love, one of the last records I tried shuffling to, before knocking a table of drinks over....

Welcome to disagree Steve.

I've never heard as much dross as this played. Well maybe one night in 1978 on a Keith M spot.  But at least it was Northern.

So we are back to the question...what is northern I guess. I'm like you, love some of the UK white almost pop stuff that was played but I really feel there was some good stuff in that set. That's just me though :-)

I don't really like white pop stuff though - well I do, I love it but I like to collect it and listen to it here at home, I hated it when they used to play loads of it out, didn't mind one or two of the really good ones, Chapter Five etc.

C'mon... There's nothing wrong with it. Love it myself. Better than some of the so called northern played at the casino

I think it's a great listing , one of my favourite eras , and I love Larry Houston ..go on Pete post the tape up ....

Can't do it Eddie, sorry, it would mean having to listen to all that modern stuff in real time, anyway it's a truly terrible atmosphere, the recording is very good but it sounds like the place is empty, I hate to remember it like that.  You can have the tape if you want it though, I'll never use it.

Plenty of good stuff in there , but it was patchy , is it definately dec 79? i would have dated that playlist about  four to six months later, sure stuff like the phantom janitor and reuben howell were massive then,   maybe they were being played but there full impact had not been felt .    The Saturday nights were poorly attended especially after the oldies   all nighters , but the Friday nights were monsters .best all nighter for my money at that time was Clouds in Edinburgh .

No I guessed at the date and I only came up with that because there were several records played at the 9th anniversary (9 tracks actually) that were also on this playlist, so it's there or thereabouts, but the writing on the tape has faded completely so I can't tell for sure to be honest.  Cecil washington wasn't discovered at the september anniversary though so it's definitely after that.

My copy of Omni has 1980 printed on it, I must admit I'd love to know what the two unknown disco rubbish tracks are - because if larry Houston is worse than Leon young strings then they must be f**king brilliant !!!!

" let's pick up the pieces, start all over, stop running away, hurting each other !"

LEGENDARY sound !!

HOLD ON

No I've got all this completely wrong, I should be saying december 1980 not 79, I was basing it all off the 7th anniversary tape but that was 1980 not 1979, sorry folks

Am a bit worried now as I can't find the tape I posted up from the 7th anniversary - it was astonishing quality, featured Richard's spot, Court David etc - I posted it up somewhere

dammit, I found the link, but it's gone

I'll repost, this one is a must

Well it must be a reissue then!  Unless it was played off some pre-release for at least 3 months - I posted up a tape of 25/9/79 and it's on there as David Porter & the Soul Searchers.

Larry Houston is the most horrible record ever played at a Northern Soul venue, in my opinion. I couldn't tell you what the first two tracks were, they all sound the same...might have been one really long track.

Fair enough, I only started going to northern things in 1980 so don't really know what I'm talking about ! :D

Pete,

Can you just admit that you're (were) not actually really into "soul" music.........just a subset of it, and a dance "scene" (albeit a subset of that too!).

We can all be clear then and I can stop laughing at some of your comments about certain records.........

Omni was definitely 1980 release.

Got me thinking what one of the first records would be, too early for Leon Bryant, and too discoey for Eloise Laws. It could have been the real Lee Moore as he played the 12" of that a couple of times on the Saturday,.

October 80 was start of my weekly (well nearly I suspect) journey till September 81, Never to go back, a short but perfectly formed starting of the journey into the world of magic that was to follow.

PS the other side of Larry Houston is fantastic, been on my most recent "mixes" (aka as load of MP3's thrown into a file)

Lovely memory to end the evening.

soon as i looked at it pete, it said RICHARD SEARLING, it's trademark isn't it? and changing times for the man, pushing the boundaries in many ways akin to colin & ian a few years earlier and also very much reminiscent of what he was doing with neil under the H.E.S.C.banner...you're probably right in as much as  a lot of the new stuff may have cleared the floor, perhaps the place was full, but they were all sitting on the sidelines, waiting for some good old fashion northern to get their teeth, talc & shoes into. i don't think that the masses today are quite so keen on turning their noses up at particular tunes when they've paid good money for what they hope is a good night out, they generally aren't disappointed...and richard is by far and away, one of the best djs to grab people's attention.

I'm sure I'd laugh at some of the records you'd describe as 'soul' Mark, so unless you've got something useful to add, or a nice tape for us to listen to, not much point hanging around here just to take the piss out of me is there?

Tape will be up in about 5 minutes time.

Closing the topic as it was meant to be about the music played one particular night at Wigan, not about whether I like soul music or not.
