Watermelon Man - GLORIA LYNNE (Fontana)...................VG++...............written by Herbie Hancock and Gloria Lynne, this is an absolute gem; yeah: it IS jazzy, it IS Latiny but it IS cool and it IS Northern with a cocky "I-know-I'm-good-looking" air to it, sounds really great in this weather (sure to chuck it down this afty!)...................£15

2. Just A Dream - THE IMPERIAL WONDERS (Day-Wood)..................VG++...................very rare Ohio label this................................£65

3. I Got A Bone To Pick With You - RUBY ANDREWS (ABC).................VG++...............first spun by Richard Searling at the Ritz All-Dayers in Manchester, late summer 1976, where it was the perfect stepping-stone from Northern into Modern, skating well clear of that on-coming disco virus. Apart from "Just Loving You", this is Ruby's best Northern dancer, where she really gets the chance to show how great a vocal-range she had, brilliant!......................................£20

4. These Things Will Keep Me Loving You - LINDA CARR (Capitol)........Mint-......this 1972 recording is a nice little rarity that would surely be well known to all by now if DJ's weren't so reluctant to acknowledge the Northern Funk category. If you know "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Spanky Wilson then this superb cover is like a sister to that, well-danceable and containing break-beats worthy of ANY sample-merchant's attention...........£25

5. I Just Found Out - FREDDIE HUGHES & THE CHEVELLES (Janus demo).............Mint-.......................£50

6. You Hit Me Like T.N.T. - LINDA JONES (Blue Cat demo)............armoured tank Northern with it's turret aimed straight at the dance-floor, no ducking for cover when this comes on!...............£185

7. Let Me Love You - CLAUSEL (Up Right demo)..................Mint-.................a gem for the Modern Rooms, an agreeable two-stepper that won't fail to please the light-footed dancer.................£125

8. It's Better To Love - THE MAGIC TONES (MAHS)..............Mint-...............a really low-priced winner is this, Northern all the way that DOES have a magic tone. All it needs is a DJ with a magic touch and a few spins to bring to folks' attention................£12

9. Don't Nobody Mess With My Baby - DEBBIE TAYLOR (GWP Grapevine)..............VG++...................£25

10. I'm Getting Weaker - THE SOUL SHAKERS (Loma demo).................VG++..................bags-down, big noise Northern stomper, sweat'll be pouring off you after this!...............£160

11. Wait Till I Give The Signal - THE SHIRELLES (Scepter)....................VG++..................group with a fair few Northern dancers in their portfolio, this is among the top 2 of them!........................£30

12. There'll Come A Time, There'll Come A Day - BASIC, BLACK & PEARL (WAM)...............VG++.............£65 

13. More Today Than Yesterday - THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE (Columbia)................Mint-.................big, big blue-eyed Northern Soul favourite with a totally Feel-Good air to it. As opposed to dozens of other "pop" Northern dancers, this really has stood the test of time and remains a playable guilty pleasure............£15

14. Lost In The Mood Of Changes - BOBBY BYRD (Smash)................VG++................scores almost from the kick-off, heads straight for the dance-floor and tears it up for the next two minutes, over in no time but it's energy well spent and you'll know what James Brown meant when he said "I Feel Good"..........£30

15. Across The Street - LENNY O'HENRY (Atco).....................Mint-......................superb mid-tempo Northern dancer, not an unknown, top, top quality you'd be proud and willing to play anywhere..........£30
