Roburt Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Seem to remember a good night at Clifton Hall, and Pat Brady leaving early Neil Page with his flashing record box with lights on! Preston Street Dancers with their whistles whooping it up....All good clean fun. QUESTION .... is Neil Page still around on the scene, I haven't seen him for years & years (though I left the north Nottinghamshire area in 1988).
Guest Barty Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 One of my favourite allnighters of all and the first I ever worked as a regular. See Pic! Such an awesome atmospheric venue! Musically it was truly groundbreaking with 60's, 70's and 80's being played ALL IN THE ONE ROOM! Yet nowadays folk say that can't be done That March '82 advert, must have been the first 'guest' session for me, and was added to the team thereafter. Very exciting times, with Cleethorpes, Bradford and Warrington kicking off around that time, and where I was very privileged to work for another few years with the 'After Dark team. Will upload anything i can find to contribute. Cheers Chalky. Sean Fantastic, I had forgotten what the place looked like too. Great times, great music, great people, used to knock about with Darran Hardan, Paul Cakebread, Peggy,Colly,KIm ,Wilky from Thorne and the Selby mob, lots of others whos names escape me at the moment. Thanks Sean for the Piccy Barty

Steve G Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 QUESTION .... is Neil Page still around on the scene, I haven't seen him for years & years (though I left the north Nottinghamshire area in 1988). Yes saw him a couple of years ago. still in the Clowne area.... 1
Peter99 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Cor blimey! Reminds me of the time Dave Greenhill and myself went up there in the back of Randy Cozens Ernest Wedge roofers van...like an Ford Escort van so not a lot of room. Went straight from work up to Soutgate - Took us hours to get across N.London / Herts and onto the M1. When we got to Rotherham Randy wanted a pint and we nearly got into a fight with about 20 local "civilians"....who didn't take kindly to the three "cocker knees" in their local. Seem to remember a good night at Clifton Hall, and Pat Brady leaving early Neil Page with his flashing record box with lights on! Preston Street Dancers with their whistles whooping it up....All good clean fun. So it was Neil Page with that record box! Always thought it was a geezer called Henry. Peter
Rob Wigley Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 John he DJs every month at Stewarts do at Shuttlewood, as far as I know he's still at the same address in Clowne, He bought the FIRST EVER ticket to ANY event at the refurbished Brid Spa (which happened to be a Brid #2 Weekender ticket) and see him very regularly around, although I think he missed Brid this time. Still the same ! Rob
Rob Wigley Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 He build that record box with the flashing LEDs, when you opened it it was full of batteries and gumph to make them work--with room for 5 records at the back !!! LEGEND ! 1
Shsdave Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Those I did, are definates, I suspect "Court Davis" is "Dustin Wilson" and "James Fountain" is "Oscar Perry"?? Des Probably answered by now but Court Davis was def Dustin Wilson Have some sympathy Judus

Remember it like it was yesterday Steve, unfortunately I don't remember much about yesterday Only joking Was there just the three of us ? Thought there was one more cause two of us had to sit on the floor in the back of the van on a couple of cushions Remember the pub but not the angry civilians Being a southerner I should have stuck to shandy because the bitter I had (& no food) resulted in a raging headache & I had to go back to the van for a kip halfway through the night .....or maybe it was those firkin whistles & Curtis 12inch ha ha even I was buying modern back then (probably thanks to you & Randy) Happy days Edited July 23, 2013 by SHSDave 1
Steve G Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 It was just the three of us Dave. Think you were in the back of the van going up and I had to sleep in the back of the van on the way back after Randy had ordered a "Full English" at the services somewhere south of Sheffield......

Tezza Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 QUESTION .... is Neil Page still around on the scene, I haven't seen him for years & years (though I left the north Nottinghamshire area in 1988). Neil works at the same place as my Wife in Chesterfield. Still does the rounds although he doesn't seem to be at as many as he did a year or 2 ago. As Rob said, DJ's at Oxcroft every Month and still at the same place in Clowne.
Guest soulie75 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 can anybody remember the pub we used to go in before we went in allniter ,and was it terry samson the promoter

binsy Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 The Oldies Allnighter! How odd, i remember being taken up to Rotherham Tiffanies around '83 and it being a bit too modern for our tastes and then jumping in a cab to KGB's and having a great night. Pretty sure Otis Redding ' Love man' got played !
Glynthornhill Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Saw Neil Page @ Soul Essence around 3 years back - still enthusiastic - did not ask if he still has the flashing record box. Re - Sean Hampsey - where have they gone ? Many regulars still around who attended Clifton Hall - even spoke to Alan senior last year ( the promoter )

Md Records Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 If you go on Dave Flynns "Anoraks Corner" site, there's a section about the "Soul Set" and sound clips of both sides - It is a fairly tough tune Des
steve walls Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Clifton Hall was my first regular English niter, would travel down on Neil McKillops coach from Edinburgh/Tranent. That was where i developed serious man-love for Gary Rushbrooke, one of my all time favourite dj's.Was it Chris Plant who played Ramona Collins ? 1
steve walls Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Possibly Chris as he did have a copy That's what i thought, although a few mates said it was Poke.
Peter99 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 That's what i thought, although a few mates said it was Poke. Might have been Poke at Clifton Hall. Wouldn't wager me glass of stout on it though! Peter

We used to have a great friendship with the many folk that travelled down from Edinburgh, my memory is not as good as it was with names but I can remember a close friend called Karen Cockburn.

I'm sure I went many times, going round and round trying to find it, but then again I seem to have thought I saw the football ground & the pitch, and it was on a slope!

Mark Jones Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I always remember Keith Minshull (in 82?) playing "The Originals - Suspicion" at the correct speed (as we now know it to be the original today) at Clifton Hall before the 47rpm "Prophets" became the definitive 80's version! Including my pressing I bought at Leicester Oddfellows! 1

Ian Parker Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 I never knew Black Sabbaths drummer was a DJ at Clifton Hall ? Anyway, great thread, loving the stories
Chalky Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 and if you were still in a Soulin mood on a Sunday night in Rotherham....
Tomo Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Looking at all the scans I am familiar with nearly all dj's at todays soul nights apart from Brian Rae. Does anyone know what happened to him? When you thought that you had danced til you could dance no more along would come Brian with some magical tunes so you would have to get up again
Tomo Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 and if you were still in a Soulin mood on a Sunday night in Rotherham.... Windmill Echoes Ad July 11th 1982.png Remember it well along with the venue next door where I went for my very first allnighter Rotherham School of Dancing!
Dazdakin Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Apart from outside the odd fellows aka curly, Stacey, monk, and Mr Philis getting proper stuck into a load of what turned out to be west ham fans Clifton hall was a fucking absolute brill nighter but ffs!! Those locals were one seriously pissed off bunch!! Remember walking from train station the night of the first anniversary and got the complete run around for at least an hour by about 10 horrible looking zipped up punks, spikey hair and red tartan trousers. We legged it!! We was only 16 17 18 and shit ourselves. Great night though I remember, and many others at Clifton hall. Dazz
Illusive Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 One more..... Windmill Echoes Ad May 23rd 1982.png Distant memories of the Windmill, coach from Donny Waterdale, Waggy (i think) spinning Wynder K Frogg and some daft sod taking a leak at the back of the stage and fusing all the electrics. 1
Chalky Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 I'll repost the second Windmill advert, tried to re-upload but wasn't having it. It is from 1981 as well.

Guest Glynn Jones Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Managed to get to the Windmill a few times. Very handy from train station with no hassle. Had many a tussle from bus station up to Clifton Hall though.
soulAdequateNP Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 QUESTION .... is Neil Page still around on the scene, I haven't seen him for years & years (though I left the north Nottinghamshire area in 1988). I feel my ears burning Yip I still get around every now and then, in fact I'll be at Mojo Rising in Sheffield tomorrow .... sadly the legendary box flashed its last and fell to bits many years ago - so when DJing I carry a more traditional steel one ..... was it really 30+ years ago Neil (definitely older, hopefully wiser)
