As a spin off from the Charay based existing thread (Rita Lee) ...........

... thought I'd ask a question or two about Pic & Bill's Charay releases.

The duo's 45's were put out in the UK, France, Spain & Italy for sure (how about Germany too ?).

My 1st Question is ... anyone know just how many French 45 releases they had ?

There were a few put out with similar picture sleeves. Many of the sleeves didn't list the actual tracks on the front but featured a No. instead.

I know there were sleeves that had the numbers 3,4 & 7 on them; but were the missing numbers in that series (1, 2, 5, 6, etc) also P&B 45's?

........... Pic & Bill French 45's ............

Soul Records SR 1  --  The Soul Of a Man / Don't Leave Me

Soul Records SR 4  --  This Is My Story / Nobody But My Baby

Soul Records SR 5  -- Funny How Time Slips Away / Gonna Give It To You

Soul Records SR 7  --  ??? / Talk About Love

How many Italian 45 releases did they enjoy (1 ?)

and what about their Spanish 7"ers, I know they had at least 1 x 45 + a 7" EP release there (the single being on Belter, the EP on Fontana).

Strangely their Fontana EP was identified as being a release that was 'directly from England' so it must have been licensed via Page One.

Hi Roburt,

Here are few missing numbers of French 45's Soul Records label discography :

Soul Records SR 2 - Pic & Bill - All I want is you / It's not you

Soul records SR 3 - Bruce Channel - Hey baby 1968 / Onley in name

Soul records SR 6 - Eddie Floyd - Bye bye baby / Never get enough of your love

Soul Records SR 7 - Pic & Bill - Something's wrong with my baby / Talk about love

Soul Records SR 8 - Prince Buster - Young gifted and black / The rebel

Soul Records SR 10 - Duffy - Rock solid / Tell me

Soul Records SR 13 - The Smoke - Jack is back / That's what I want

Soul Records SR 14 - The Smoke - Sugarman / Like a good man should

Note that Pic & Bill SR 5 "Gonna give it you" is not the version originaly issued on Blue Rock in USA, it's an alternate take (very different)

Cheers Romain

I have these UK issues:

Pic & Bill - All I Want Is You / It's Not You (Page One POF 024) released 19/05/67
Pic & Bill - This Is It / Nobody But My Baby (Page One POF 037) released 01/09/67

Pic & Bill - Sad World Without You / Just A Tear (Page One POF 052) (promo) released 26/01/68

I'm not sure if that's all they had issued in the UK.

Yes, Germany as well. At least one 45 on Metronome:

Pic & Bill - Just A Tear / Sad World Without You - METRONOME M 25019

See scans below.

Another bizarre thing is that there was a famous swedish artist that covered "Sad World Without You" in 1969. Was only released on an EP featuring three other artists as well (one of them Downliners Sect with a unique tune, only released on that swedish EP).

There's another german release by Pic & Bill on Ariola. Will add details once I found it. I'm not even sure I have it though I can picture label and sleeve in my mind. Need more sleep....

Edit: The soul of a man lp came out in germany too.

With the same titles order than the French one ?

Did you notice our Blue's side / Jerk's side ? :)

It was typical of the French Lp's of the era, with the slow tracks on one side and the fast ones on the other, like the Rhythm & Blues Formidable serie. Not a bad thing during the "surprise-parties" !

Yes, I have a copy of their French Decca 45 .... always loved the picture cover.

Here are the details of the german Ariola 7": All I want is you/It's not you - Ariola 19554

As it happens I don't have it any longer. I used to have it but sold it before I started collecting german labels.

Thanks Benji, the "slow side/fast side" was typical on French albums.

I just saw it was released in Italy, too : https://www.discogs.com/Pic-Bill-Thirty-Minutes-Of-Soul/release/4589466

Is it the same cover  as the german LP ?

Philippe, discogs info is wrong. Release country is Germany. Cover shown is the german one. The little text underneath Vibraton logo is german.

Why would a German record label use a generic 'black guy' picture for the cover of a LP by a soul duo  -- Pic & Bill.

It makes no sense at all, especially as Major Bill seemed to be sourcing Euro record companies with multiple decent pics of P&B back then.

Guess someone at Vibration was just very lazy.

Thanks Benji, in fact in their description they say the liners are in German (?).

Vibraton was just a low budget label that released stuff across the board, i.e. soul, classic, jazz, swing, german schlager, what have you. They weren't a major label.

Most german labels used pictures of the actual artists. Yet quite often they used generic pictures. Sometimes not even of a black singer but a white singer/band.
