Len Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 (edited) This is the best version (apart from Little Anthony) A big 'Len's Den' sound at the minute (Please excuse the plug, but it is) 'Arthur Prysock - Hurt So Bad' - Enjoy! Len Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 (edited) Version wow how good is this despite L Yep, every time I play it out it gets such a reaction from dancers and collectors alike - It's simply another 'under the radar' tune that got missed - What a tune aye mate? It just builds, and builds, and builds...... All the best, Len Edited July 19, 2013 by LEN 1

Soul-slider Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Also on that Sounds Superb album are these Northern corkers.. You're Gone Lovers Concerto Losing You Should be able to get it cheaper than that ebay link. Try Gemm or Musicstack Pete. 1
Dave Moore Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Here's a 70s version that I played a couple of years ago and got a few asking about it. Mark Covington on lead vocals. Great record. Regards, Dave https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UYgb2_QGQE 3
Dave Moore Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Another version that gets the odd play at ours. Ms Wilson does a real number on it. No big city production here, just a pitch perfect voice and the perfect vehicle for her. Regards, Dave https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLQZykhp7Sw 1
Dave Moore Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 And of course here the definitive version. Can't be bettered for me. Randazzo had Little Anthony's highly stylised performances down to pat. Combination made in heaven. Regards, Dave https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bnjuj7ipxac 1
Pete S Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 (edited) Dave's right - Little Anthony's version can't be bettered. I love this version though. Edited July 20, 2013 by Pete S 2
Roburt Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Here's a 70s version that I played a couple of years ago and got a few asking about it. Mark Covington on lead vocals. Great record. Regards, Dave https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UYgb2_QGQE That Philly Devotions version came out here on a CBS 45 in 1976. Sure I've got a copy (on issue or demo) here somewhere.
hullsoul Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 All creditable "other" versions (really like Nancy & Cathy's outtings) but it's one of those tunes that I just can't get past LA's version & all others just pale against it. Cheers Martyn 1
Dave Pinch Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 (edited) Just dug it out ... sounds better on the LP than the post on you tube trouble is the delfonics 45 is on crap west indies plastic,,,its the same take tho..little anthony`s version was a top 10 pop hit in the usa in spring 1965..a well known song so bound to be lots of covers Edited July 20, 2013 by dave pinch 1
Pete S Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I like the Delfonics classic 45's, but the singers falsetto really grates on this version of Hurt So Bad so I vote it a miss, sorry.
bri pinch Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) This is true Pete, and i agree Little Anthony is the definative and best version but the Delfonics on this label...all of the traditionalists would orgasm over it .... i mean...jamaican...stateside... white demo.... suits you sir , going back to original question, certainly not expensive as i know what i paid for my copy, but rarity... personally i've never seen another one....... Edited July 21, 2013 by bri pinch 2

Guest Garry Huxley Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 reckon susan rafeys version from 1965 is the best, a great randazzo track. W reckon susan rafeys version from 1965 is the best, a great randazzo track. Thats a yes from me, It is a totaly awsome production and cannot be matched, This is the one i normaly play out but But the original little anthony vocals are impossible to beat, A later post here mentions Reputation, Should have seen the toe tappers going when i played that earlier in the year at soul in the bowl rushden, the delphonics is a wonderfull 70's feel to one of my favourite songs. Gotta make a descion sorry i cant there all good in their own way. Garry. P.S. Great thread Peter reckon susan rafeys version from 1965 is the best, a great randazzo track.
Guest Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) Think my favorite version is the one by Nancy Holloway. Only released in France as far as I know.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2b0f-zR7VI Edited July 25, 2013 by Preben
Garethx Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Where was the Susan Rafey version played first on the Northern scene?
Pete S Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Where was the Susan Rafey version played first on the Northern scene? I'm not sure it ever was, I think it might just be one of those collectors records. I've never heard it played anywhere.
Tony Smith Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Hyde early 90's, it was known before, Koppel put it on one of his tapes ( the one with New Wanderers, Gary Dean, etc), didn't hear it out before, and I'd played a few times at Kev Moores Alexander do.
Garethx Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) Cheers Pete and Tony. Hard to believe it wasn't massive at any of the big nighters of the '70s. It has all the ingredients. Difficult to do a bad version of this great song really. A couple of versions not mentioned above which I think are particularly good are by Grant Green on Blue Note and Byrdie Green on Prestige. Ringleader Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Incredible song - I used to put the Susan Rafey version on tapes in 1978 and from that I sold 9 copies of the LP on Canadian Verve. I picked them up earlier that year for 50cents each in Toronto. I didn't know at that time there was a US 45. For anyone who likes the Susan Rafey version have a listen to "Lesley Gore - I won't love you anymore (sorry)" Alan Lorber arranged both tracks and they have a very similar feel

I'm a closet Lesley Gore fan. I recently got everything she ever recorded including a few demos. Whittled them down to beat ballads, classic girl group sounds and dancers, got rid of all the schmaltz, ended up with a cracking 38 track compilation.
