Finally got a bit of time on my hands today so thought i`d get some info:

 

What was the original version?

 

I know James Phelps came out in 1971 ,John Edwards and Nate Evans 1972,rest no idea??? :g:

Did the Magnetics come out on a 45 or is it under another name :facepalm: .

 

Floyd Smith seem to get his money`s worth  out of this song,have to say all the versions are good.Bit of fun what`s your fav. :P

Wayne,   You forgot Johnny Dollar's version on Fised.  Nate Evan's verson also came out as Nate Evans & Buss before Nate Evans and Mean Green, but they're same song.

He was Lennie Satin who released Somebody Help Me / Homebound on FIP (the same label as Mel Britt)

was going to mention the flip side on the Nate Evans, the brilliant 'This Time With Feeling', does that appear on both the Buss and Mean Green releases?

Yep both the Buss and Mean Green are the same record A & B, case of identity change for what reason I do not know. Perhaps someone can enlighten us.

Question, what's it worth these days - satin?

Also, who is/was satin - are they black/white?

This version is sweeter than the others imo - I like them all, but this is my favourite. John answered the who is it bit. I think the Satin release is a tough one - can only guess at current value as I haven't seen one for ages. I suspect it's well over £500.

Satin is Lennie Satin, who also recorded a record on FIP.

 

Nate Evans pressed both versions of the 45 himself.

 

"The magnetics" is not the magnetics, it's John McKinney (of the Magnetics) with just some girls backing, recorded in New York.

 

Either the Satin or Phelps is the first version, probably the Satin.

Interesting thread for me this..... Personally, I have always thought they all share the same backing track except of course John Edwards, which is a far superior professional sounding production... Whether its better though is purely down to personal taste I would say. All other versions are essentially the same backing track though( maybe a little overdub here or there but otherwise identical).

Rarity wise, in my opinion,the Satin version is easily the hardest to obtain though... From its plays from the late 80s onwards, (mainly via Gary Dennis in the UK), it was always a real toughie to turn up. I reckon I've seen no more than probably 5 of these come up for sale since those times whilst I've probably seen 20-30 copies of James Phelps( which is probably the dearest version to buy these days)....

Price wise though, I'd put the Satin at about £300-350,less than stated earlier.

They're all good though aren't they?

I didn`t know about that version as well John,will try and find a clip.

 

So it looks like Satin might have been the first release?Any idea of year?

 

For me James Phelps and John Edwards are best versions but i think there all good in there own way.John Edwards also got the wonderful A-side: it`s those little things that count :thumbsup: .

My version preference is James Phelps and then John Edwards over the other versions, but do think it’s a tight run thing.  Of the two songs I think I prefer You Were Made For Love over The Look On Your Face and on that case I prefer John Edward’s rendition on Aware, which was his next record after his Bell release.  So for me it’s a draw with: J.P. 1 — J.E. 1

someone in TX turned up some small quantity of satin that went through ebay like 5 years ago. didn't affect price much.

 

i think johnny dollar stole the song, when i was going through john mckinney's stuff i actually found sheet music for the song that had him as writing it (I guess it could have been stolen from him). but there's also the weird title changes. let me see if i scanned the sheet music.

Going by info from a previous thread on here,this is only way you can own on a 45 via grapevine,was a acetate only which Richard Sealing had/has: The Magnetics feat John Mckinney:

 

I said this above, but this record doesn't have the magnetics on it. It is John McKinney of the Magnetics though.

maybe, i don't know. it would be strange if he had more than one or two copies though since otherwise listing them on ebay and selling them is better for him than sitting on records forever.

I do remember a seller about 6/7 years ago or something like that (time flies these days) listings a few copies on ebay.I remember

a mate asking if i would order a copy so we could try and work a deal.Sadly i could`t afford it at time,think it worked out about £300 for a copy but my memory isn`t what it was lol.

Yes guy in Texas had a few Satins - certainly more than two......

 

Different Johnny Dollar (name is actually a slang term) although I seem to recall something else by the Fised guy.

 

Right so please don't make me try and find my Manifesto article on this......

 

.....for the hard of reading there are two song titles here with the same music - "The Look on your face" is credited in BMI to Floyd Smith so my money is on Apache being the first reeleased version, with possibly Johnny McKinney being the first recording of the song if not Phelps.

 

"Your loves got me"  - credited to Charles Fisher as songwriter on BMI, so probably Fised (Johnny Dollar) (wasn't Fised one of Fisher's labels?) first and then Satin who credits the song as being by him and Smith-Smith.

 

I do agree though that Nate Evans and John Edwards were later.
