Guest MissHongkongfuey Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Hi All, Does anyone have any info regarding the Derby Label at all? My apologies, if this has already been asked before. A discography or scans of the label would be lovely too, if anyone has them. Much thanks in anticipation, Teresa

John Moffatt Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Hi All, Does anyone have any info regarding the Derby Label at all? My apologies, if this has already been asked before. A discography or scans of the label would be lovely too, if anyone has them. Much thanks in anticipation, Teresa Just have the one Teresa, Mel Carter - Wonderful Love / Time Of Young Love on Derby 1005. It's a bit of a Sam Cook sound-alike, if you don't know it. I don't seem to be able to post images on here I'm afraid. John
Guest MissHongkongfuey Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Hiya John, I didn't know the Mel Carter until now. Its playing in the background and is just lovely! Does sound very much like Sam Cooke....very Sugar Dumpling-ish lol I have Johnnie Taylor - Dance What You Wanna on that label design. I think it's one of my favourite designs ever Thanks for sharing
Swifty Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Nice label , I only have the Mel Carter on it though , somewhere ?
Jaco Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Thank You Mike. I didn't realise that there were so many! There are lots as you say but if you look at the discography most of the stuff is from 1949 to 1954. I doubt if the stuff starting at Johhny Taylor is the same label.
Mak Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Jeannie Robertson - Memories . Best on the label IMHO . ....Shite name for a label though 1

I doubt if the stuff starting at Johhny Taylor is the same label. I've managed to find 2 different label designs (1950's)??? from Derby that feature on the discography...very similar Jaco. Only sourced from a tad of info via Wikipedia. The one that features on the header of the discography page is the same design used for Johnnie Taylor and Mel Carter....
Robbk Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) There are lots as you say but if you look at the discography most of the stuff is from 1949 to 1954. I doubt if the stuff starting at Johhny Taylor is the same label. The older Derby label was located in New York, and had mostly R&B and Doo Wop and a little Pop and Jazz on it. The later Derby was a subsidiary of Sam Cooke and JW Alexander's SAR Records. It has some nice records on it in addition to Mel Carter and Johnny Taylor. It was located in L.A., and ran in the early to mid '60s. Edited July 16, 2013 by RobbK
Guest MissHongkongfuey Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 I've a few reggae label tattoo's but this design I adore....it may be the next, featuring Johnnie Taylor as its a big fave play of mine also.

Guest Dave Turner Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) In the Globaldog discography above I believe that's two different Derby labels. The Derby in question was set up in 1963 by Sam Cooke & J W Alexander starting with Buck Floyd (Derby 100) Opps, just seen Robb's post Edited July 16, 2013 by Dave Turner
Neilb Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Milt Grayson - wayfaring stranger/your old standby is on the label The wayfaring stranger side is truly superb. Neil

The Derby in question was set up in 1963 by Sam Cooke & J W Alexander starting with Buck Floyd (Derby 100) The Buck Floyd 45 is on an unrelated third Derby label (from Kentucky).
