Roburt Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) Back to 1967 now & Sheffield's King Mojo Club ........... Only actually attended the niter that was held on 1st April when the (fake) Drifters were the live act. My mate Tom Sleight wouldn't go to the niter on 4th March coz no live act was on and we'd been to see the Alan Bown Set there the Sunday before. So he couldn't see the point in heading over to Sheffield once again. Didn't go see Zoot Money either as cash that week was short and we'd seen Zoot's Big Roll Band at the Boulevard (Tadcaster) on NY's Eve. Zoot & the group had turned up really late that night which had screwed up the night's timetable on that important occasion. Anyway, Steve Jennison & Graham Bolton were over in Dony (from Hull) that weekend, so we took em out on the town and then gatecrashed a couple of late night parties. Spent the middle of the following week in Hull (the place always had a great nite life scene back then). Grey Bolton And Phil Smith came back to Sth Yorks with us and we all went to the Mojo niter together on the Saturday (Tom Sleight also being a member of our small troop). Had a great time at the niter but did note down that there was a lack of 'birds' in attendance at the club that night. Made no mention of what songs the 'Drifters' performed or how good I thought they were. Edited July 24, 2013 by Roburt

Roburt Posted September 14, 2013 Author Posted September 14, 2013 (edited) A 1958 show at the Apollo in Harlem. Presented by radio DJ Dr. Jive (Tommy Smalls) .... Tommy (Dr. Jive) also hosted another show at the Apollo around the same time on which Ray Charles also topped the bill. In 1960 he got pulled into the payola scandal court cases and so lost his radio job. He moved on with his life though, working for Polydor & Jubilee Records. However his life was cut short by cancer & he passed away in 1972 .......... Edited September 14, 2013 by Roburt

TheBigO Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) The Olivettes featured former Ikettes Frances Hodges and Sandra Harding (aka Sandy Harrell) who used to back Oliver Sain after Frances became pregnant. Not sure who the 3rd member was yet. Quick google search reveals that Sandy and Ann Olivette were background vocals on Fontella Bass songs whilst Oliver was arranging and playing on them so this may be the original line-up of the group. He did recruit local talent throughout the area to handle background vocals. Edited September 16, 2013 by TheBigO
Steve S 60 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I particularly like the "hand made" feel the graphic designer has managed to achieve with this poster. 1
Roburt Posted September 16, 2013 Author Posted September 16, 2013 I was a regular at the Nite Owl niters in Leicester in the summer of 67 ..............
Derek Pearson Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 some neat photos there chaps - nice one. Fraid I ain't got nothing to compare with any of these historic posters apart from a pair I acquired sometime early eighties. The first was a very basic day glo orange poster plugging Marvin Gaye's visit to Bradford in 1981, I say basic 'cos it was just hand drawn lettering (you could actually see the pencil guidelines) with no photograph or anything. It's amazing what falls into your pocket on a night out when it's windy. The second was a much more professional jobbie promoting Smokey Robinson's visit to downtown Halifax in the same year I think. That came complete with a photo which I obtained by politely asking for it and was given it from the entrance foyer wall. Also bought a pale blue tee shirt for the same concert that still fits to this day. Actually that's a total lie - I have got a tee shirt but I'd be lucky if it would fit over one of my legs these days never mind my body. Derek
