Guest Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Does anyone on here know if "I Keep Tryin'" Fred Hughes on Exodus ever got booted. thanks Barry
Robbk Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I would be mildly surprised, as it was a fairly easy record to find in numbers during the 1970s. But NOTHING about The NS scene would shock me, as some pretty weird things have happened.
Mick Holdsworth Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Never booted in the 70's or 80's - Was easy to find, so no need. I'm not considering modern day booters though. If there was a chance of selling half a dozen as real ones at a good price (eg recent Dana Valery boot of boot of pussycat boot) before anyone clocked on, then that almost covers half the cost of making it in the first place, as it appears to be so cheap to do, especially if you aren't to bothered about the reproduction quality. Having said that, I'm pretty sure there are no modern boots of this. Yet. Cheers Mick

Cheers Mick Mick , a mate of mine , who's not one of us but loves Dana Valrey , keeps asking me to get him one but I won't pay much for a boot , is there a cheap version as he just wants it to play at home
Chalky Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 thanks for the replys guys, saw on go FB other day for £70.. atb Barry It went pretty quick too. Great record.
Mick Holdsworth Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Mick , a mate of mine , who's not one of us but loves Dana Valrey , keeps asking me to get him one but I won't pay much for a boot , is there a cheap version as he just wants it to play at home Yes, the recent boot is now down to £10 on eBay. If you do a search on the UK site / records, you will find it there (it's buy it now). But it may be cheaper if you wait a while - the seller also lists stuff at £2 and £3 if they don't sell too good). All these recent boots are generally poor sound reproduction though, so you may be buying a bag of bones. Can't say if this title has a good reproduction or not though. Cheers Mick 1
Dave Pinch Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Even in the early 90's this 45 was only 4 or 5 quid.... All mint black stock copies. Long time ago now... But £70 wow 1

Only Dreaming Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 (edited) Not forgetting that "I keep trying" also came out in 1986 on the "Rare Soul Uncovered - Vol 2" Lp from Charley, which is where I first heard it. Great, gritty sounding track Best, Dave Edited July 15, 2013 by Only Dreaming

Mellorful Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I have 2 issue copies and the labels are slightly different on the I keep tryin side. One copy on right hand side has 'Bunky's Pick' and a small star below and the other doesn't. The Bunky's pick copy printing on both left hand and right hand side is slightly larger and the lettering at bottom of label slightly thicker . The Bunky's pick copy dead wax reads I keep tryin lightly etched. The other copy the dead wax reads EX 1023 Can anyone explain why there is a difference?
Godzilla Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 I've had copies with different labels - glossy and matte. Neither had the Bunky's Pick legend so that's at least three variations of the stock copy.
Sammy Seaman Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 if anybody wants to sell me one (i keep trying)would be interested £40-50 depending on condition cheers sammy
SHEFFSOUL Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Even in the early 90's this 45 was only 4 or 5 quid.... All mint black stock copies. Long time ago now... But £70 wow i saw a few WD's about 5 years ago..shudda got one...
Martyn Pitt Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Is this the same Fred Hughes that recorded on Vee Jay ?
Ady Croasdell Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Is this the same Fred Hughes that recorded on Vee Jay ? Yes and interestingly a Los Angelean with mainly LA recordings, though his Chess ones were done in Chicago. 1
Martyn Pitt Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Cheers Ady I though he was, but thought I would check.
Philippe Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 (edited) He had an average LP on Brunswick. I prefer Freddie Hughes Edited December 8, 2014 by Philippe
Ady Croasdell Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 He had an average LP on Brunswick. I prefer Freddie Hughes Which I think was probably also Chicago; nice cover though.

Philippe Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 Which I think was probably also Chicago; nice cover though. It was Ady, produced by Carl Davis and directed by Willie Henderson. https://www.discogs.com/Fred-Hughes-Baby-Boy/release/1725439
Robbk Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Is this the same Fred Hughes that recorded on Vee Jay ? Exodus WAS essentially VJ, while they were going bankrupt (Exodus=escaping or getting out-eg leaving the business). 2
The Yank Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 A demo copy of this just turned up on Manship's web site. It has all the information you might need on how to tell the difference between the original copy and the bootleg.

Thanks for the heads up. https://www.raresoulman.co.uk/index.php/auction/9573/i-keep-tryin-cw-weve-got-love Mine are issue copies so I am still none the wiser. I wasn't aware the record had been bootlegged, just assumed minor variations on the label depend on where they were pressed. I guess with JM behind the record it will reach £200 at auction.
Pete S Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 There was one of these on Ebay yesterday, buy it now £25. I didn't bother as that sounded a bit much.
billb Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 So going back to the original question, it seems it was booted! J.M. "Our tip is do not buy any variation of this title with “I KEEP TRYIN” lightly scratched into the deadwax - it is certainly a counterfeit." https://www.raresoulman.co.uk/index.php/auction/9573/i-keep-tryin-cw-weve-got-love
