Sam Cooke The Wonderful World Of Sam Cooke

Ridiculously RARE 1966 UK press is astonishing condition.

Easily this great artists rarest UK album on this most collectable label that had a penchant for black music, with many of it’s white rosta considering themselves “R&B” artists.

This LP covers Sam Cooke’s roots in Gospel with The Soul Stirrers and songs written by Sam’s greatest influence R. H. Harris and The Gospel Paraders.

RARE in the extreme and may stir a little interest with rock fans as Keith Richard, Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon, Georgie Fame, Roger Daltry, Goldie (of the Gingerbreads), Alan Freeman & Andrew Loog Oldham all contribute unique quotes for Sam Cooke and a life tragically cut short.

Album vinyl is flawless, just revealing one light surface blemish on one side in strong light, retains original inner sleeve and as you can see both the front and back cover are flawless other than light age-browning to the back white areas.

I can’t imagine encountering a finer copy of this rare “historical” album in my lifetime.

Jr. Walker And The All Stars Soul Session

1966 UK Stereo press in blinding condition, near perfect vinyl, perfect labels, retains original inner sleeve, front and back cover as the scans reveal are flawless.

An important album for both British Motown foragers and also Northern Soul DJ’s as it contains the highly popular “Good Rockin” which sets the pace for an explosion of screaming sax, with “Everybody Get Together” showcasing Junior’s wild-style of play with another crazy Northern Soul candidate. “Brainwasher” “Three Four Three” were all recorded under the stewardship of Harvey Fuqua. With the last track “Satan’s Blues” pulling Junior Walker into the studio with Berry Gordy & Lawrence Horn, which then sparked his career to take off with “Road Runner” and the rest is history.

This example is the rarely seen STEREO copy, flip back cover…ad may we say again just FLAWLESS condition.

Little Eddie Taylor I Had A Good Time C/w Forgive One Mistake

It is rare to say “There’s a Classic Northern Soul 545 that has never been bootlegged in any form.

There was an infamous “blank” press which hit the market circa ‘75 along with The Silhouettes - Not Me Baby, Subway Riders - After The Sesion, which considering the sheer gorgeousness of the respective labels of Goodway, Moon Shot & Peacock it must go down as the most miserly bootlegging excercise in the history of Northern Soul, little wonder I forgot about it….how could such gems with huge artistic labels be disrespected with with no attempt to replicate their beauty.

But on the upside, it does make Peacocks most desirable Northern Soul offering even more enticing. Equally it’s very rare to say this copy is pristine - just check out that perfect soul-art label in flawless condition, looks like it was printed yesterday and the vinyl surface returns the compliment.

I did on forensic inspection find a minuscule sleeve brush blemish on the flipside vinyl surface - which annoyingly prevented that coveted but rarely encountered truly-mint grade.

“Classic” - some may ask, but this tune at Cleethorpes Pier was huge, not so much Wigan Casino but still a well received spin and we think you’ll hearing more of in the future.

Potent Texas soul from the little man with the big voice!

You will not find a finer copy - and how refreshing to hear it once again and find it still has all the “bollocks” it had the last time I had the pleasure!

Eddie Regan Playin' Hide And Seek

In 2013 to acquire the real-deal Northern Soul classic in flawless condition, is the challenge many collectors are rising to.

This Wigan Casino monster dancefloor favourite was “covered up” as John Madara - Play The Game Of Love - very apt as John Madara was involved in so many similarly uplifting Northern Soul productions. Once it was uncovered as Eddie Regan, it soon graced the turntables Cleethorpes Pier; instantly it’s popularity swept nationwide.

This title of course featured in one of the most distasteful Northern Soul counterfeit scams when repro’s entered the UK in 1975 along with the Yum Yums on White ABC promo and listed as originals. Collectors got ripped off and to this day the repros of these two ABC promo classics are often passed off as originals.

Before you is the authentic original with clean as a whistle run-out grooves (the counterfeits have pitted run-out grooves) in stunning “like new” condition.

This listing is especially for OCD who seek as near perfection as you could eer hope for.

Jackie Wilson It Only Happens When I Look At You

There could be no bigger compliment for two British writers Ken Gold & Mickey Denne than to have their 1975 song picked up by two of the greatest Soul singers the world has ever known.

Both Jackie Wilson & Aretha Franklin took this song and recorded killer versions to a level of Northern Soul perfection.

This could well have been Jackie’s last studio recording as in September 1975 he suffered a heart attacked whilst on stage whilst singing “Lonely Teardrops” wisely UK Decca waited 20 months before releasing this outstanding performance, for a UK release.

Before you today is 1977 UK Decca PROMO kit complete with an immaculate UK Brunswick DEMO, a beautifully written promo letter and full gloss original artist photo with Decca file sticker on the reverse quoting reference #14192.

There is no USA release of this mighty single and to own it in this form is something very special, as Jackie was to lie in a coma for 9 years before his death in 1984.

Whether it be Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin or the UK version on Magnet by The Majors - this is a great song - in this form a very important piece of Soul & Northern Soul history!

Micky Deane & Ken Gold of course went on to a glittering writing career, no doubt rather pleased that 2 Soul giants recorded their non-hit song.

1998 PROMO only 45 and undoubtedly the most-wanted Motown record of the moment.

The Temptations team up with Narada Michael Walden in California and the Grammy Winner guides a five man line-up Otis Williams, Ronnie Tyson, Terry Weeks, Theopolis Peoples III, Harry McGilbery through this stunning session using their 1964 classic “My Girl” for inspiration, as the same dreamy pace is embroidered with highly skilled harmonies, strings and a compelling bassline driving the need to dance..

I know you're just joking, but offering 200 pounds for the grand prixs is not the same thing as offering 3500 for mello souls. and nobody in the thread said that the leroy barbour was worth 100 pounds or the mello souls was worth 2000 pounds. i honestly would like a copy of the grand prixs, and don't want to pay 300 pounds for it. maybe I'll have to wait a while but i'll get it eventually, maybe via trade. or maybe i'll get enough of my wants and not have enough records to buy that i'll eventually want to pay 300 pounds for it (unlikely as records are endless...).

Not likely to get any takers on the back of a strong auction price though, particularly as it is in line with current 'book' prices (yes, even Tim's (£600), which is rather old now). If I had a copy of the Grand Prix's I would probably be able to trade it in with a dealer for £400+ worth of other stuff at the moment.

 

Anyway, you're in a better place to find one under the radar over there. Didn't someone say the current Mello Souls was bought for $20? ... very nice. So good luck!

Swings and roundabouts and some. like you say win some etc  . Bottom line,i rate the track but it  is either a great radio track or early doors if playing out.

See where Steve is coming from Wayne, but as long as you like the record no matter what it is, thats all that counts, personally, I buy records for me, the dancefloor is not king, the record room most certainly is, looked at a lot of Filthy playlists and there is some incredible stuff that has been played that you wouldn't associate with the dancefloor, we've all payed over the knot in our time, but like I say, as long as you like it, thats the main deal.

i only play records i like/want.The key is playing them at the right time, some i get right,some i get wrong.Bottom line is i`m a collector first,dj second.Key is finding a happy meduim.  .

actually most of the copies of the roe-o-tation floating around are mint. some dude found a box of like 50 or 100 in a garbage bin in chicago and was selling them on ebay. they all had a big pair of "X"'s on them. this is in addition to copies that might have already been in the UK. I'm not sure I've ever seen a beat copy actually.

yeah, something like that. i don't know about tips, i was into the record before that find, i bought 5 copies from that dude and i think i sold all of them. the find didn't affect the value much, it seemed to expose the record more actually. seems to consistently be like a $100-$150 record set sale (although the manship auction was on the lower end). I wish I bought more copies and just sold a lot of them for $75. surprised it wasn't higher before and its value hasn't changed much since, it's so good and it appeals to the newer generation of collectors and is kind of funky and 70s.

I don't think it was forgotten about just too cheap for most.  Too many are more interested in records far rarer and pricier than to worry about a little ole forty quider.  It's been known and had plays for years just never really made it.

The Grand Prix record was the last to finish. It seemed at least 2 guys got into it and couldn't stop. It probably went on ten minutes past the original deadline.

 

One of them might be quite releived today that his highest bid wasnt enough.

Manship's copy was clean though Bob.Fair price i thought.

There's a newish version of "Special Category" around,done by some funky young dudes with a longer instru break. 

Also done a few years back by a Hip-hop group who used "Spec Cat" on a backing loop.

special category will go up in value eventually (both sides are great actually). it may have not appealed to the UK northern scene back whenever but it has the right funky 70s hard drums that appeal to younger collectors. maybe manship thought now was the time it would break, which is why he auctioned it. maybe if he had done it a year later it would have gone higher. who knows. but i think it definitely will go up.
