Guest Soulsurfer Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Oh dear, I seem to have started something here! but guys thanks very much for your suggestions! I absolutely agree with the Mxine Brown on Wand post earlier, I'm currently keeping my eye on something no! keep the suggestions rolling in, and I'll keep you updated with what I buy! So far I've got: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3gY1D6SpgI that cost me 18 quid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-30COAmyLU8 for 35 quid and after all my talk about buying great undervalued records, I went and bought you've been leadin' me on by The Steinways on oliver Liam
Agentsmith Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 dells - make sure gene chandler - after the kaughter five stairsteps - stay close to me jerry butler - moody woman darrell banks - somebody somewhere if you gotta start somewhere spot on bri, the dells...an eternal cheapy and one of the classiest tunes.....EVER!!
Agentsmith Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 There is nothing snobbish about buying cheap records and sticking to original vinyl Pete. The topic I highlighted will keep Liam busy for a long time within his budget and get him a fantastic collection without the need to resort to reissues. He and others like him are the future of the scene and may wish to move into DJing, no many will touch him with outta sight re-issues. He can get plenty of fun without buying re-issues and yes he should buy whatever he wants, I fully agree. Shouldn't we just stick to giving Liam tips rather than turn this into another OVO/boot topic, having said that we haven't done the topic for the last few weeks so another is due. my teeth are grating bro, must be the sharpening of knives in the distance...
Agentsmith Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 barbara mercer - call on me precisions - instant heartbreak parliments - dont be sore at me al kent - the way you've been acting lately bob wilson - all turned on. juanita williams - you knew what you was getting juanita williams - baby boy how many times have we said how good a double header is barbara mercer?, just exquisite crossover!

Frankie Crocker Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Hi Liam. Welcome aboard. Looking at your playlist, you are evidently on the right track already. In addition to the tunes nominated by other SS contributors, I would add:- Astors-Candy-Stax James Brown-Hey America-King Gene Chandler-There Was A Time-Brunswick Dontells-In Your Heart-Vee Jay Shirley Ellis-Soul Time-Columbia Five Stairsteps-Stay Close To Me-Curtom There are so many good records out there, it's hard to know where to start but half the fun is turning up something decent on a major label that has been forgotten or completely overlooked. Good hunting... 1
boba Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 it's not worth buying $100 records imo until you have at least a couple DJable sets of cheap records. I'm not even talking about the "5 pounds cheapies" thread which are often hard to find cheap records that might go up in value and that aren't all great, I'm talking about the suggestions in this thread and artists like the Impressions, Five Stairsteps, gene chandler, etc. It's not just "settling" for records you afford, these records are actually better than most 4 figure records imo. The only issue would be if you're DJing events where people are expecting well known expensive northern records and you don't have them. 2
Philt Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Great cheapies around in abundance Liam. I don't think you'll go far wrong working through labels like Wand, Brunswick, Arctic, Okeh, Mirwood, One-derful, Mar-v-lus and Revilot for starters. Few more expensive bits as you might expect but truckloads of quality too for not much dough. Also check out Motown/ Tamla / Soul / VIP, Gordy; you could cobble a tidy box together outta that little lot without any trouble whatsoever. Go with your gut pal Morecspecifically, I'd also look out for things like Fred hughes - don't let me down / I keep tryin Carl Carleton - competition Spyder Turner - you're good enough Major Lance - since I lost my baby's love / story of my life Jackie Wilson - lost you / blue skies Atb Phil 1
Lionelonthevinyl Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Will chip in with a couple that I don't think have been mentioned.....Billy stewart-count me out on chess.......jj barnes-please let me in on ric tic.......jj barnes-baby please come back home on groovesville and anything by the brothers of soul..........good luck....Rob
Andybellwood Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 (edited) Hello everyone! I'm Liam and I'm in my mid 20s. Recently, though I'm a music lover of many genres, I'm finding myself more and more drawn to this scene..... there's just something about this music! I do have a little bit of pedigree, my old man has been a stalwart on the scene for many years, as have most of his close friends - through whom I have heard some fantastic sounds! Recently I was given the privilege of being allowed a 30 minute set at a funk & soul night in York - 'melting pot' which I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed - to the point it has started me on the way to building up a modest collection of 45s that really hit my spot! So far I have managed to get my hands on: Spyder Turner - I Cant Take It Anymore/Dont Hold Back - MGM Little Richard - Hurry Sundown/I Don't Want To Discuss It - Okeh Demo Junior Walker - Peace & Understanding - Soul Demo Chuck Jackson - Hand It Over/Look Over Your Shoulder - Wand JJ Barnes - Say It/Deeper In Love - Ric-Tic Gloria Taylor - You Got To Pay The Price/Loving You - Silver Fox Soul Brothers Six - I'll Be Loving You/Some Kind Of Wonderful - Atlantic Tony Clarke - Landslide/The Entertainer - Chess Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor/No Room To Cry - Charger I also got some other bits, but nothing worth shouting about! Anyway, to my question - most of these records have cost me a tenner or less, so really I'm after direction to more of the same! I've gone through the Kev Roberts top 500 and picked out some things I like the look of, but what are your opinions on great, undervalued records? TELL ME WHERE TO SPEND MY MONEY!!!! Hi Liam , welcome to soul-source - lots of advice and help on here and hope to see you at some of the local York events incl Waterfront Blues and Soul Club Sunday chillouts and the York All dayer - next one Sat 24th Aug - usually some great , cheap sales boxes as well to fuel your needs Edited July 2, 2013 by andybellwood
Chalky Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Benny Latimore - Girl I Got News For You - Dade Soul Brothers Six - You Better Check Yourself - Atlantic JJ Daniels - Mr Lonesome - Sureshot Johnny Moore - Call It What You Wanna (I Call It Love) - Chi City Johnny Moore - It Maybe Tears Of Joy - Bright Star Jimmy Delps - Almost -Carla/Karen All cheap, all good enough to Dj with, all great records IMO.
Markd Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Howard Tate - Baby I love You - Verve A must have. Completely agree MrC, brilliant record, picked one up for a tenner and pretty sure you will be able to find cheaper on evil bay. Would love to hear this out on a big system.
Guest Soulsurfer Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Guys, I can't stress enough how much I appreciate all of your suggestions! I have a playlist as long as my arm to get through, but by no means stop coming up with the goods! hopefully if there are any other young (ish) or even older folk wanting to get into this great scene, they can take a look at some of the tremendous stuff you guys have already come up with! For the record, out of the records I've bought so far, there is one that is head and shoulders above the rest (IMO) and that is Hand it Over by Chuck Jackson. I find myself daydreaming about DJing a short set, just to have the privilige of giving that a spin in public. It's that fucking good.
Guest Soulsurfer Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Could I also add one small request to this thread - when suggesting a record, could you please include the original label where possible.
Sammy Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Manhattans - I bet'cha couldn't love me - carnival Ray Charles - tired of my tears - ABC Brothers of soul - hurry don't linger - boo Pat Lewis - Look What I almost missed - solid hit The Chimes record mentioned before is really worth checking out... So good! The list goes on. Happy hunting!

Mod tunes and northern fandabidosey x I'm fairly certain the Yum Yums is a pretty expensive record! not sure on the rest, however thanks very much for your input - We arent to far apart in what we like either, Chuck Jackson wa one of the first things I bought, and Is probably my top sound!

Mal C Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 (edited) Great thread, Liam I wish you well, it's great fun listening and collecting all this stuff for the first time.... If your feeling a tad brave you might want to buy some good seventies stuff as well, there are tons and tons of cheap, utterly brilliant records out there upto the fifteen quid mark. If you have hoovered up Carl Carlton's - Competition Aint Nothing, then deffo go for "you can't stop a man in love" on ABC, the dramatics - dont make me no promises on cadet is another one, sublime and so common, it's worth a tender....David Morris Jr - Midnight Lady is another £5/10 killer on the Buddha label. This months best cheapie for me, £15 was Booker T Jones - gotta get the best of you / A&M, actually from 1980, but a great slowie, you will need Johnny Taylor - your the best in the world / CBS, utterly fabulous and cheap as chips.... Garland green - I'm Not a violent guy / uni is simply as good as it gets, again easy to get, the Manhattan's - give him up / de luxe is another I bought as a skint student, still worth a fiver, and so good it will stay on the shelves as long as I'm about to enjoy it... Keep on grooving or 'move on up' as a certain Kent lp once said... Mal.c Edited July 3, 2013 by Mal.C.
boba Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 I still don't even own the yum yums 45, and i have a lot of 45s
cementman Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Hi Liam When I was younger, (I sound like an old fart, probably am) I was into the instant gratification thing, excited, playing the same side of my records over and over. Flip 'em young man, sometimes there's a gem on the other side Example, other side of your Olympics Same Old Thing is this little beauty, great dancer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5HSInyxpPA Two for the price of one can't be bad Have a great time discovering the music. It's probably too late to warn you that this stuff is addictive, can be very expensive and ends up consuming most of your spare time. Great innit!! 3

Oh don't worry, my dad will not let me get away with not listening to the flip! Incidentally the reason same old thing is one of my top tunes is because of the flip -the first time i heard the riff was on a certain Fatboy Slim LP ;)
Tiggerwoods Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 If i started all over again collecting then first 2 records i would buy would be maxine brown wand tracks, let me give you my lovin and one in a million. Two of the best tunes you can get at any price. Dead right .... I still have mine but would never sell them ....LMGYNL is one record I have to jump on dance floor too (amongst many others).

HI YOUNG SOULSTER, AND WELCOME TO THE WORLDS LONGEST RUNNING YOUTH SUB CULTURE/MUSIC SCENE UNBROKEN SINCE IT EMERGED IN THE MID 6T's when the MODS adopted black music from JAMAICA & USofA in the form of SKA & ROCK STEADY, CHICARGO BLUES & R&B From both sides of the Mason Dixie Line DETROIT SOUL/TAMLA MOTOWN, & THE CLASSIC SOUL of STAX ATLANTIC, added to the music policy were the CLUBS most popular were the 12 to 6 clubs in SOHO that specialised in playing Black music, the first recognised SOUL ALL NIGHTER was the SCENE CLUB & outside London the TWISTED WHEEL KING MOJO,NIGHT OWL,, All the 6t's MOD clubs had live music, (sadly missing from the scene today, although not totally as Ady Croesdale ACE/KENT RECORDS 100 club DJ & promoter of he weekender concept, that does include live acts) many live acts were white UK groups that played their adapted cover version of R&B SOUL, at this point I would urge you to listen to the CD's of early SOUL CLUBS, THAT YOU CAN GET FROM GOLDMINE RECORDS AND THEN BUY 45's DAVE K 2
wolfie66 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Got one of my favorites for 5 dollars, not much more now probably - Third guitar-Sad Girl on Rojac, soulful, sweet and shuffling Beginning of my life - The Chimes Wear it on your face - The Dells (goes like a feckin' train this one) Willie Hutch - Love runs out on a pressing for your own enjoyment if you like the classy side of things Superiors - I'd rather die on Sue (?) Wilson Pickett - Let me be your boy on Verve Sonny Ocean - Pity me (Columbia?)
wolfie66 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Ooh ooh and you'll need an ender - I used Hot Tamales Bring it home (give it to me) a few times for something different - to be honest the ladies preferred it to the blokes, but it's a top, cheap, soulful track for a steamy summer evening
Back Street Blue Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Wear it on your face - The Dells (goes like a feckin' train this one) My fave Dells' tune....wear it on our face - love the quirky intro...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVUOPYwKnX8
wolfie66 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Thanks for posting the link blue - nothing like dancing to help with the dishes ;) 1
Back Street Blue Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 sometimes there's a gem on the other side Example, other side of your Olympics Same Old Thing is this little beauty, great dancer. "I'll do a little bit more"........Cracker
wolfie66 Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Peter's been brave and mentioned that modern disco stuff (sorry Pete) Best investment I ever made was Tommy Stewart's eponymously titled album, every one a winner and always gets everyone up. Can't post links like above but here's a start: and the rest of the album's ideal for the floor too
TOAD Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Hi Liam i am not going to tell you what to buy as i have no idea what costs a tenner these days but heres my tip on eBay do a saved search it can be an artist song label then it will show up all the records and you will save a lot of money as prices are not set in stone. Often ive been outbid only to find a cheaper and better condition copy latter on.ive had some $6 45s that have been £30-40 on major dealers lists atb T 1
Guest posstot Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Go onto you tube and search for Northern, soul, RnB and Popcorn too. ( Stay away from that Disco crap as well. lol). Look at different peoples choices and get a percaption of what you like. Dont worry about the top 500 either.....Go do some heavy listenning and get a feel of what YOU truly like....Dont get lost in the rarity of a tune over its substance either. ( you will find it is nice to own a few Rare things though..). Oh, and get a good Job, a possible quarter or more of your income has to be subsidised into your annual outgoings for juat about the rest of your life....PMSL! Have Fun.
Guest FunKPunK Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Ive got about a 100 or so classics all on original labels, one of the ahem *top 500* over rated and over priced as well as over played. All good tunes and all under £40
Rowan Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Few more... Shirley Brown - Yes sir brother Volumes - my road is the right road Ann Peebles - slip tripped fell in love / 99 lbs Aaron Neville - Hard nut to crack All cheap and fantastic dancers! Hey Callum - have you seen the price of the Volumes lately ? not looking cheap these days

Anyone else have any more suggestions? Well, I've not been back to this thread for a short while, but the suggestions keep stacking up! I've been busy myself though, got myself everything above other than Major Lance and the MVPs, I also managed to get hold of Frankie beverly and the butlers on Sassy for 160 quid which pleased me greatly! Playing my first set in november at Bishop Auckland Football Club, a joint set with my Dad no less! Terribly exciting, but one thing is for certain, Dee Dee Sharp - What Kind Of Lady Will be getting a spin!
