Ralph Graham She Just Sits There C/w You Had To Hurt Someone

Ralph’s Graham first record which he was obviously proud of as he sent this copy to an associate signed Best Wishes Ralph Graham (see scan)

This rarely seen double helping of classy Northern Soul was a huge tune in the 90s, then to lay almost dormant as it’s rarity dictated the masses hearing it less and less as the few copies known slowly but surely gain entry into the most prestigious collections.

Then like magic it got a localised resurgence when the equally as fine flip-side broke surface on some of the more adventurous DJ sets.

Today, we think BOTH tunes are fully worthy of a Northern Soul renaissance, as this 45 is as rare as it’s ever been.. and to my ears sounds much better than it ever has..

Dead-right for today’s dance-floor preferences.

Flash Mckinley Which Way Did She Go + 3

A WORLD ONE OFF!

You are viewing something unique and very special indeed. The soundfile unleashes 4 tracks from Bombay recording session, 2 released but stupidly rare - two unissued and ridiculously good..

Even though this acetate has his highly prized “I’ll Rescue You” and it’s Bombay release flipside, the delicious Latin flavoured R&B masterpiece “Millie”

“Which Way Did She Go” - sits in a class of it’s own. What ever the Bombay guys did in the studio, they replicated the most haunting “echo” effect on those wailing girls I’ve ever heard in a record.

Bongo’s kick it off, twangy guitar purrs away, then Flash’s takes off on a magic carpet of girl-group utopia. Pounding beat hammers away in the background as Flash’s vocal-inquisition jerks and twists through a maze of bongo’s, unparallelled haunting girls - this record is something else!

If that’s not enough for you to rush to sell your soul - listen to the other 3 tracks in the session..

Personally I’m totally blown away..

Porgy And The Monarchs That Girl C/w If It's For Real Baby

Teddy Randazzo the uncrowned Prince of the Big City sound - his Razzle Dazzle production team were a music factory of unparallelled proportions whilst considering full orchestral production soul!

This example we think showcases the man’s diverse talent for the Beat Ballad and for the Northern Soul upbeat dance production.

Top side is an exhilarating dancer with full girl choir supporting the jerky, feel-good arrangement as it belts along at Northern Soul back-drop pace then this genius adds horns & strings at just the right moment sealing proper Northern Soul!

So switch sides and experience a different style that never fails but to blow me away! John Parks joins Teddy Randazzo writing meaningful lyrics to embroider a precisely constructed strolling production. Randazzo again uses girls to great affect, banks of strings, distance horns, prominent piano prods away building the atmosphere with Porgy’s beseeching vocal putting the icing on this avalanche of soul.

PERFECT!

David Ruffin My Whole World Ended

Motown collectors worldwide are renowned for being neurotic about record conditions; who can blame them when you collect one particular genre - the aim has got to be to strive for perfection.

So we thought this STILL SEALED David Ruffin album would please, as MOTOWN album still factory sealed are rare no mater what decade.

This 1969 12 track expose of the Temptations most notorious member, with David in iconic pose is not just a pretty-picture. The tracks include full 8 cuts NOT issued as 45s. Our sound-filed example reveals killer non-45 Northern Soul candidates, including the fabulous “Somebody Stole My Dream”

44 years old - and still sealed, minuscule drill hole in cover very bottom right is the only flaw and it’s so hard to detect.

Freddie Waters Just Enough To Get Me Cool

Ted Jarrett & Robert L. Holmes the unsung champions of Nashville Soul construct an album of supreme soulfulness with their long-term disciple Freddie Waters.

Ted & Robert avoid the pressure of New York disco that was overwhelming te airways in 1977 and concentrated on delivering Soul with a dance production and mid-tempo soulful dance delights.

inc: “Being For Real Is Where It’s At”

Check out the impressive sound-file of this insanely RARE album, that we have not listed in over 20 years.

Crystal Clear I Still Love You C/w No One Else Like You

This weeks Sweet Soul offering is ludicrously RARE!

There are not many records we can definitely say we have never-ever had in stock before. This D.I.Y. release from vocal group “Crystal Clear” is an all-time first for John Manship Records.

Check out the delicious-double soundfile and soak in what are two uniquely constructed Sweet Soul ballads that I personally have no comparisons for.

Skilfully constructed by Lee Magee both sessions deliver soul in an unusual arrangements. Listen and consider you may never see this 45 listed again.

Samantha Jones Surrounded By A Ray Of Sunshine

1967 flawless DEMO copy still residing in it’s birth-sleeve.

A Northern Soul monster of it’s of it’s time, a Wigan Casino and Cleethorpes Pier dancers favourite, so much so the inferior 1973 Pye version by the Playthings also receive huge Wigan Casino exposure, presumably as this rare original version was not available to the Jock.

It’s “Northern Soul Classic” status was underlined, when the 1979 “Wigan” Casino Classics Label released the limp “Playthings” version.

It original is rare, it is so very elusive.. and wearing the green and white DEMO clothes ….it is totally gorgeous…

PS Condition could not be finer!

Soul Sisters Good Time Tonight

How many I wonder TWISTED WHEEL anthem started they’re lives as a flipside. What a testament to those 60’s Soul Pioneers who rummaged away through all manner of 45s searching for that elusive style of sound that would maybe set a dancefloor alight!

This Smokey McAllister composition was relegated to the B-side in favour of a rather ordinary girl-group ballad. Underlining how out of touch record companies were, as to what the record-buying teenagers of the day wanted.

Someone somewhere foundit, flipped it and the rest was history - a Twisted Wheel anthem was born; later receiving the national seal-of-approval by being bootlegged on the notorious “Soul Sounds” label.

Before today is the ultimate way of owning this 1965 rip-roaring classic, the head-turning 1965 British Yellow London DEMO! in utterly faultless condition!

James Bell And The Highlighters Band The Love Of My Girl C/w Trying To Get Chosen

RARE Indianapolis Soul from the man who gave the Rare Soul scene full three great and collectable 45s.

This example in our experience is the rarest offering two precisely constructed vocal-group soul grooves.

Topside is currently causing vinyl-anchoring as awareness grows for it’s much bigger Northern Soul potential; flipside is a street-level harmony ballad f the highest order

Lee Rogers Love And War C/w How Are You Fixed For Love

Lee’s very first and certainly his rarest 45 on this iconic Detroit label. A most attractive label that seemed dedicated to a full-on Soul-Dance sound, invariably steered towards explosive levels by Mike Hanks.

Mike is joined on this session by McKinley Jackson & William Garrett to carve out a rumbling runaway juggernaut of Northern Soul that destroys all in it’s wake.

Bellowing brass fights for space with Lee’s angry vocal as the lyrics get drenched with angst and attitude, with frantic shrieking girls igniting Motor City frenzy.

Flip it over and the pace n’power does not recede in the slightest, as Lee is off again on a hazardous journey of breakneck Northern Soul with all the same ingredients shook up into another floor-destroyer.

note ” How Are you Fixed For Love” was issued three times by Wheelville - this is the first original press - “Love and War” was issued once.. and it’s by far the hardest Lee Rogers NS record on the label… it’s time this weighty tune had it’s day.

Tracy La'vett And The Rufus Cannon Combo In My Great Big Lonely Room C/w Love For A Life Time

Smooth groove in the same frame of Jackie Ross, Nella Dodds, Barbara Mason, Delores Howard etc. The Princess of the sultry mid-tempo soulful stroller ideally supported by a strong male vocal group chorus.

BOTH sides of this obscurity offer those qualities in abundance, two 60s soulful Northern Soul steppers saturated in that bewitching chemistry coming to life when the catalyst of the male harmony is added.

Check the sound file, view the mysterious label (origin unknown) and you’ll agree for it’s much-loved Mary wells copyists genre - this is one charismatic 45.

Foundations Change My Life C/w Closer To Loving You

RARE 1978 UK DEMO

A English only release which Bill Connor and Simon Cohen decide to hide a great British soulful group dancer on the flip-side of a Boogie groove. Little wonder this passed by everyone at the time…

Before you today is the extremely rare date-stamped “A” adorned DEMO copy.

Take a listen to an ear-catching gravel coated lead vocal growl his way through this a subtle vibe & guitar driven dance production. a British groove that sounds so very American in it’s make-up, which is why this has been in recent times a very popular DJ choice. If you like upbeat disco inspired Boogie the flipside will appeal too…

But what will appeal to all collectors, is the fact this is the extremely obscure PROMO copy - in fact the very first copy we’ve had for sale this century!

Condition is so very near PERFECT!

Persians That Girl Of Mine C/w Don't Let Me Down

Now here’s a records we’ve not seen in an age and wow it sounds so good after it’s long absence.

Shelley Haims of Golden World & Pied Piper fame joins up with Willie Mitchell crafting a Detroit / Memphis hybrid showcasing genetics from both city’s. Gritty horn powered vocal-group mid-paced groove features tight creamy harmonies soothing a gargling lead vocal, occasional blues guitar riff precede blaring horns.

As the session builds a saxophone joins the party… it’s all there in a mix of two mighty cultures of soul music blending into a heady cocktail, of intoxicating Northern Soul.

Harmony ballad fans will just adore the flip-side, with everything mellowed down into a slushy pool of soulful pleading.

This record disappeared from the NS radar several years ago, just thought it would be nice to bring it to the fore again. As potential for reactivation is obvious.

Freddie Scott Mr. Heartache C/w One Heartache Too Many

BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN! Both sides!

Freddie Briggs, Johnny Northern & Clyde Otis a New York gathering of immense prowess guide the gravel-coated vocal of Freddie Scott through a Big City production, of monumental proportions.

I do like to hear a record of quality that you’ve not heard in a while, forgetting how superior it is to your recent other listenings.

Mr. Scott just belts it out BIG throughout a nothing-spared production; if that wasn’t enough the flip-side bonus is nearly as good.

There are several David Ruffins on discogs right now between £5 and £22 and they're all mint-, in other words they're mint and have been played a few times. Obviously the most expensive is the UK seller LOL

There is an old saying for every toilet seat theres an arsehole

Looking at the David Ruffin LPs there are none that come anywhere near a mint - still sealed - original issue - it is a right rag bag list of VG, re-issues, covers missing, warped etc

Basically you pays your money you take your choice.   If I collected Motown LPs or David Ruffin or wanted a copy to play at home on a good stereo system I would be happy to pay a premium.

I appreciate that but what I am highlighting is a snapshot at any time does not throw up a lot of cheap mint sealed copies - condition guaranteed. Yes, the finishing price is a little high but if you collect albums and condition is important and indeed it is the most important thing for me,  I can see people being happy to pay it.

Just think you could  get over 120 £100 LPs for the current price of a single he is currently auctioning - its only relative.  Somone sold a battered 45 of Dena Barnes on here yesterday for £200!

Thanks Simon.W

What was that Flash like.

Nothing special IMO.  Obviously the first two tracks are available on the Bombay single. Tracks 3 & 4 are on another acetate, 7" I think, and out there on the WWW if you poke around a bit :shhh:

Think the Freddie Waters lp was cheap, not seen one for sale since mid 80s.

You can get a UK Move label copy for £8. So I don't think that, at over £330, the US version is that cheap !!!

Some people dont want re issues, very rare album on US.

The result may prise a few copys out of the woodwork.

Could say same about Bobby Thurston lp but nobody  seems to mind paying £200 for a copy.
