Guest Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 (edited) I use the Record Collector standard to grade my records - as below: M is ONLY for reissues / new releases / sealed records M- is a pretty much unplayed record for me - any obvious signs that a record has been played and I usually downgrade to an Ex+ EX+ is a very strong grade for me - just showing some signs of being played but no noise / cue burn / crackle / styrene burn at all. VG+ is for records that have obviously seen some wear and have had a good few plays and may even have light intro crackle but play very, very well. VG is for records with quite a bit of wear and surface markings and some noise / crackle but still a very good player. VG- is my lowest grade and VG- records for me are in bad shape - lots of sound quality deterioration and many, many surface marks - not nice. PM or email mail@resolutionrecords.co.uk BACS payments prefered. 7"s The New Bloods ‘Found A Love, Where It’s At’ / ‘Self Service’ (20th Century / USA / 1960s / VG+) £4 ( Few scuffs — minimal — sl. label damage to flip — total bargain price for this awesome double-sider from Eddie & Ernie ‘incognito’... ) Ernie K. Doe ‘Dancing Man’ (Action (swirl) / UK / 1968 / VG+) £8 ( Tuff, tough original UK red/yellow label press for the devilishly good 45 — memories of Brainfreeze....scuffed wax and some scribble to label but still a beautiful thang... ) Carl Graves ‘Baby, Hang Up The Phone’ (A&M / UK / 1974 / VG+) £2 ( Killer 2 Step from back in the day — few scuffs here and there — still a tune.......bad bwoy.... ) Nino Tempo & 5th Ave. Sax ‘Sister James’ (A&M / UK / 1973 / M-) £8 ( Unplayed copy of this H-U-G-E Northern instrumental.... ) The Dee Felice Trio ‘In Heat’ / ‘Wichita Lineman’ (Bethlehem / USA / 1967 / M-) £10 ( Two superb instrumentals from the now £200+ rated LP — immaculate condition — I’ve got x2 copies here — one yellow / black demo and one silver / black issue — first taker gets the demo in it’s correct custom sleeve.... ) The Soulful Strings ‘Burning Spear’ (Cadet / USA / 1960s / M-) £5 ( Unplayed copy... ) Kip Anderson ‘If That Don’t Make You Cry’ (Checker / USA / 1966 M-) £5 ( Fantastic Northern dancer — needs a revival....... ) Z.Z. and Company ‘Getting Ready For The Getdown’ (Columbus / USA / 1979 / M-) £100 ( 100% original ‘thick-edged’ copy of this stunning Modern Soul monster.... ) Nat Kendrick and the Swans ‘(Do The) Mashed Potatoes pts 1 & 2’ (Dade / USA / 1960s / VG+) £5 ( Fantastic R&B — Club monster — few scuffs here and there so half-priced... ) Tom Jones ‘Stop Breaking My Heart’ (Decca / UK / 1966 / VG+) £3 ( Rare? Naaaah...Good? Oh, yeah....Tom’s second best NS tune (after the peerless ‘Chills And Fever’) and a country mile better than ‘Looking Out My Window’ — give the man some love, he’s been right there for nearly 50 years... Buddy Colette ‘Sister Of Satan’ (Denise / USA / 1960s / VG+) £8 ( Fantastic Popcorn cut — huge demand at the moment — great copy here....I’d date it at about 1962? ) The Flirtations ‘Nothing But A Heartache’ (Deram / Spain / 1969 / Ex/VG+) £10 ( Superb item with a totally ‘6T’s period’ pic sleeve of the girls — my first-ever copy and *only* ever issued in Spain with a pic bag — the sleeve is just slightly yellowed and the wax is a bit scuffed but pretty damned good — I’ve seen this @ £50+ on Northern lists — but not from Mark Rez... ) James Davis ‘Bucket Head’ / ‘Doodle Bee’ (Federal / USA / 1960s / VG+) £15 ( Murder rare James Brown R&B production on a WDJ copy here too — some scuffs and minor crackle here and there but still a damned fine copy.... ) El Gran Combo ‘Shake It Baby’ / ‘Chua-Chua Boogaloo’ (Gema / Dominican Republic / 1960s / VG) £20 ( Sadly — this is waaaay off M-, otherwise the price would be double from me — 2 incredibly good Latin Soul-Funk sides — ‘Shake It Baby’ is simply one of the best Latin-Soul cuts I’ve ever heard — dancefloor magic and would actually sound great on any scene — Northern, Popcorn, Latin etc — stunning — flip is ace also — pure Boogaloo from the old school — hard rhythms and amazing percussion whipping up a storm — very likely my first-ever record from the Dominican Republic too — this record ain’t pretty to look at but plays really well all through with no major problems at all...huge piece... ) F.B.I ‘F.B.I’ / ‘The Time Is Right To Leave The City’ (Good Earth / UK / 1976 / Ex+) £8 ( The ‘other’ good track from these cool UK Funkateers (along with ‘Talkin’ Bout Love’) which is pure Funk all thru a la Average White Band / Kool & The Gang / Light Of The World etc etc — pure party vibes — kicks in with a brill drumbreak too — love, love, love this.... ) Manfred Mann ‘Poison Ivy’ (HMV / UK / 1966 / VG+) £2 ( Great version of the old classic from these boys — dinked middle but all good otherwise... ) Tommy G and the Charms ‘I Know What You Want’ (Hollywood / USA / 1960s / VG+) £12 ( Nice WDJ copy of this NS belter — with a strong R&B edge...again — some scuffs but still a good copy... Huey Smith & The Clowns ‘You Got Too pts 1 & 2’ (Instant / USA / 1960s / VG+) £25 ( New one on me...and...I’m glad to finally make it’s acquaintance....killer Deep Funk from an unlikely source — heavy, heavy skins action, screeching vox from Huey and the most wonderful girlie backing vox from his gals — both sides just smash it...few scuffs here and there — has gone for £100+, believe me — superb drumbreak midway in — pure sleaze.... ) Na Allen ‘Open The Door To Your Heart’ / ‘I Was Telling Her About You’ (Janus / USA / 1972 / M-) £10 ( Immaculate Xover double-sider — appears unplayed... ) Jerry McCain ‘Love Ain’t Nothin’ To Play With’ (Jewel / USA / 1966 / Ex+) £5 ( Cracking Funky-Blues — tiny edge warp — minimal... ) Kastle ‘Getting Down (With Hoss)’ / ‘Why Don’t You (Do It)’ (King (throne) / USA / 1973 / M-) £10 ( Rare one — my first-ever copy but something I’ve had my eye on for a while — 2 sides of tuff instrumental Funk with a definite ‘difference’ — could very possibly be blue-eyed — who knows? Both sides extremely worthy on this wonderful old Nashville label... ) The Jewells ‘Lookie, Lookie, Lookie’ / ‘Smokie Joes’ (King (blue) / USA / 1960s / VG+) £12 ( Gorgeous WDJ copy of this highly-prized NS 45 — great girlie dancer....few scuffs — pretty clean all things considered.... ) Classics IV ‘Spooky’ (Liberty / Spain / 1968 / VG+/Ex) £10 ( Marvellous item — great, great version of the Dusty Springfield tune in a lovely pic bag — pure 6T’s schtick — love it — killer version too, believe me... ) Walter Foster ‘Waitin’ / ‘Your Search Is Over’ (Loma / USA / 1965 / M-) £10 ( Unplayed copy of this ace JB-produced double-sider.... ) Charlie Rich ‘Mohair Sam’ (Philips / UK / 1965 / VG+) £8 ( Cracking R&B dancer from this musical legend — beautiful copy, here.... ) Swinging Soul Machine ‘Spooky’s Day Off’ / ‘Nobody Wants You’ (Polydor / Holland / 1970 / VG+/M-) £8 ( Few creases to pic sleeve — wax is A-1...rare Dutch pic sleeve issue for these blue-eyed Mod / Soul / Funk banger/s — lovely item....both sides absolutely superb... ) Hank Ballard and the Midnighters ‘Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go’ / ‘If You’d Forgive Me’ (Parlophone / UK / 1960s / VG+) £8 ( Rare UK Parlophone press for this raucous R&B floorshaker — nice deepie on flip — dinked middle and a bit scuffed but still good value @ eight quid... ) Moorish Vanguard ‘Sitting In The Sunshine Of Your Love’ (Polydor / USA / 1977 / M-) £50 ( Murder rare JB-produced Sister / Deep Funk — I’ve got 2 copies here — one black/white demo and one red/black issue — first taker gets the demo in it’s correct custom sleeve — ok? Both are 100% unplayed....old Keb Darge spin... ) Willie Kendrick ‘You Can’t By Pass Love’ / ‘Give Me Lots Of Lovin’ (RCA / USA / 1966 / VG-) £15 ( Sadly — this WD copy of an amazing NS double-sider outta Detroit is a lonnng way from M-, it’s scuffed up badly and actually has a little edge crack (which I’ve fixed as best I can) but unfortunately ticks for a few revolutions (very faintly) — this is why it’s priced very, very low....grab a bargain.... ) Horizon ‘Give It Up’ (Shine / USA / 1980 / M-) £125 ( Unplayed copy of this outrageously good Modern Soul dancer... ) Willie Collins ‘She’s Hot pts 1 & 2’ (Skyride / USA / 1983 / M-) £10 ( Unplayed copy of this killa Modern Soul / Boogie banger... ) King Earnest ‘You Gonna Miss Me’ / ‘The Soul Stroke (Can You Handle It)’ (Sonic / USA / 1970 / VG) £75 ( Again — sadly not M- or this one would be nearer the £300 mark from me — lotsa scuffs and some background crackle here and there during the quieter parts — but — thankfully, this is SO raucous that there are very, very few quiet parts so you hardly notice it — not for the faint-hearted — right up there with THE very best Deep Funk 45s ever played on that scene... ) The Freeman Brothers ‘My Baby’ / ‘Beautiful Brown Eyes’ (Soul / USA / 1965 / VG+) £8 ( Great Northern double-sider — few scuffs here and there so sensibly priced — also a bit of scribble to topside so please be forewarned... ) John Lee Hooker ‘Dimples’ / ‘I’m Leaving’ (Stateside / UK / 1964 / VG) £2 ( Well-worn, but still highly playable, classic Funky-Blues double-sider from The Hoochie Coochie Man... Billy Eckstine ‘Stormy’ (Stax / UK / 1969 / M-) £4 ( Immaculate copy of this wonderful version from Billy — later made huge by The Supremes etc etc — in one of those lovely purple UK Stax custom bags too — marvellous...insane voice... ) Kim Weston ‘Goodness Gracious’ (Stax / UK / 1975 / M-) £4 ( Unplayed copy in correct custom sleeve... ) Rhythm Masters ‘Black Conversation’ / ‘I Can Do Anything You Can’ (Success / USA / 1970s / M-) £12 ( Immaculate copy of this ace King Floyd-produced double-sider — top, top N’Awlins Funk sounds from a Master — both sides kick it but the topside just edges it for me cos the brass is harder and it’s got that wonderful Jungle Brothers sample from ‘Straight Out Of The Jungle’ on it too — magnifique.... ) Brenda Holloway ‘Hurt A Little Everyday’ (Tamla / USA / 1966 / M-) £4 ( Unplayed WDJ M/S copy of this exquisite little girlie / NS dancer... ) Brenda Holloway ‘Together ‘Til The End Of Time’ / ‘Sad Song’ (Tamla / USA / 1965 / VG+) £8 ( Again — an immaculate Tamla WDJ copy here...slight scribble to label — minimal.... Dorsey Burnette ‘Jimmy Brown’ / ‘Everybody’s Angel’ (Tamla Motown TMG 534 / UK / 1964 / VG+) £75 ( Big ‘A’ red/white demo copy here — and - believe me, this has had very few plays — Motown magic and highly sought-after, in it’s correct TMG custom sleeve too — a cracker....) Gotcha ‘Jamie’ (Tequila Gold / USA / 1976 / M-) £20 £15 ( Unplayed copy of this banging Funky-Soul track with a huge drumbreak midway in.... ) Johnny Little John ‘Can’t Be Still’ (Terrell / USA / 1960s / VG+) £8 ( Superb little Funky Blues 45 — heavier on the Funk and lighter on the Blues — just how we like em — very, very fair price here, believe me..... ) Alvin Cash ‘Whip It On Me’ / ‘Alvin’s Bag’ (Toddlin Town / USA / 1968 / M-) £4 ( Unplayed copy — immaculate Chicago Funk double sider.... ) Johnny & Bill ‘No, No, No’ / ‘This Is My Story’ (Try Me / USA / 1960s / M-) £10 ( Unplayed WDJ copy of this rare James Brown-produced double-sider... ) Kaleidoscope ‘We’re Not Getting Any Younger’ (TSOP / USA / 1975 / M-) £12 ( Wonderful 70s NS dancer presented here on an immaculate Mono / Stereo demo copy — so, so hard to find.... The Neptunes ‘I Don’t Cry Anymore’ (Victoria / USA / 1960s / VG) £15 ( Northern Soul oldie — rarely heard / seen at all thesedays — this one’s a way off M- but plays all thru just fine with no pops / jumps — actually a bargain price...... ) 12"s: Lamont Dozier ‘Going Back To My Roots pts 1 & 2’ (WB / USA / 1977 / M-) £60 ( Yet another beast of a 12” this List — certified i-m-p-o-s-s-i-b-l-e to find — immaculate copy here... ) Jagg ‘Take Time’ (Delirium / USA / 1982 / M-) £200 ( Definitely one of THE rarest 12”s I’ve ever handled — a true Grail — one-sided OG issue here too — flip is blank — massive for Modern Soul / Boogie / Disco collectors alike... ) Legion ‘Guarantee’ (Columbia / USA / 1985 / M-) £8 ( B-I-G personal fave — HUGE Boogie banger — love, love, love this....still tight in it’s shrinkwrap... ) LPs: Alvin Cash & The Registers ‘The Philly Freeze’ (President / UK / 1966 / Ex/Ex+) £25 ( Rare, rare UK press for this wicked LP — ‘Boston Monkey’ , ‘Twine Awhile’ , ‘The Philly Freeze’ etc etc — great combination of Soul and Funk from the Windy City...funky-spul and soulful funk all the way... ) Dayton ‘Dayton’ (UA / USA / 1980 / Ex+/M-) £10 ( Unplayed copy — killer Soulful / Boogie LP — ‘Eyes On You’ etc etc — hard to find nowadays... ) Lorraine Johnson ‘The More You Want’ (Prelude / USA / 1977 / VG+/M-) £45 ( Possibly THE rarest LP on Prelude?
