Wicked Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Of course Pete, I think all the better records among those I listed were oldies at that time. Cant remember who was on on at the time I was recording, it was after searlings spot so Minshull or Evison maybe? seem to remember Minshull playing some sh*te around that time
Guest Mart B Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 seem to remember Minshull playing some sh*te around that time Minshull did play some drivel at the time, but its better than some of the drivel thats played at some so called Northern venues today.

Andyj Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Clearing houseand came across some old tapes, put one in a tape deck whilst preparing dinner. Taped from a bog-standard cassette recorder, probably left on a bag on the stage. 10/11 June, 1978, 35 years this last weekend!! Some I'd just about forgotten Ben Zine - Village of Tears Carol & Gerri - How Can I Ever Find a Way Inspirations - Your Wish is My Command Prince & Princess - Stick Together (lot's of requests according to RS) Johnny Hendley - My Baby Came Out of Nowhere Paula Durante - If He Were Mine Ronnie Love - Let's Make Love Mike McDonald - God Knows Cobblestone - Trick Me, Traet Me Stemmons Express - Woman, Love Thief Peter Jarett and the Fifth Circle (Velours Cover) - Run Babay Run Tamala Lewis - You Won't Say Nothing J C Messina - Time Won't Let Me Helen Shapiro - Stop and You Will Bexome Aware Dusk - Point of No Return Pat william Orch - Police Story Betty Boo - Say It Isn't So Peggy March - If You Loved Me Paul Anka - When We Get There Teddy Van - Theme from Coloured Man Happy Cats - These Boots are Made for Walking Holly St James - That's Not Love Demures - Raining Teardrops never hear Carol & Gerri or The Demures played much these days, which is a real shame. Although Agentsmith did play The Demures at last years Tower weekender as a request for me!!
Guest manusf3a Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Construction Hey Little Wayout Girl was being hammered by RS around this time I think. How I loathed that record. People even started to dance differently in 1978. The Polyveldt plod I called it. Three steps right, left leg kicked back, three steps left, right leg kicked back. Wtf was all that about? Agentsmith Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Here's a few more from the above that I reckon haven't been played that much over the years: Carol & Gerri - How Can I Ever Find a Way Prince & Princess - Stick Together (lot's of requests according to RS) Johnny Hendley - My Baby Came Out of Nowhere Paula Durante - If He Were Mine Demures - Raining Teardrops Herb Johnson - I'm So Glad All worthy of plays at an oldies night I reckon agree they're definitely up for playing steve, the irony being that to the up & coming generations, it's like playing something totally unknown again.
Grayman45 Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) You're absolutely right, the above track listing is not all from a Searling spot, the first half is, the second half is probably Dave Evison - or Russ doing Dave Evison's spot, the last few records are all Russ spins. Joey Dee was the biggest record at Wigan on my first ever visit, that was April 76. It was also dropped that night as it was the night it became available on a pressing. Ah, that makes sense now, though I'm no great authority. Thanks for that. Edited June 19, 2013 by Grayman45
Popular Post Agentsmith Posted June 19, 2013 Popular Post Posted June 19, 2013 i love this.......60 posts in and richard is still as popular a talking point as he has been throughout his career, he has left an indelible mark on so many of us, including how diverse our musical tastes have become, without perhaps realizing all along that HE in fact, was the catalyst. i get to see him regularly now, his magnetism is still obvious, his enthusiasm just as flamboyant ( be it for the modern side of things, such has been his progressive nature ) and his knowledge virtually unparalleled with the exception of mssr's brown & levine, though he does confess to amaze himself at some of the things he wasn't aware of but perhaps should have known...a learning curve very much like our own but he's still ahead of the game. listened to jm's clip of eddie regan.........wow, wow, wow...and its richard all over again with his stellar cover-ups!! 4
Agentsmith Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Ah, that makes sense now, though I'm no great authority. Thanks for that. pete, wasn't that also the case with paul sindab.....a one week wonder?
Steve G Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 seem to remember Minshull playing some sh*te around that time That's an understatement as far as what Keith was doing in 78. The only Wigan DJ I ever got on the stage and "had a go" at......fine about it now. 2
Wiganer1 Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 found many a gem mixed in with the classics on wigan tapes - for me it just represents the history of our great scene good and bad....whatever era..

The only Wigan DJ I ever got on the stage and "had a go" at......fine about it now. probably the last occasion that i attended wigan would have been a saturday night....1979....kieth was playing "prance on" by eddie henderson, i recall this being a huge disco record for capitol on a 12" single....and people danced to it!......,diversity personified even if it ain't northern soul
Agentsmith Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) what about court davis?....try to think/she put the hurt and how about chris bartley " out of my mind"....and these are still supremely obscure.. to be honest i thought richard's appraisal of his own classic cover-ups list in the prestatyn mag crystalized all the info everyone knew but in one fell swoop...it is truly amazing to look at....apologies...in fact it's the "WHAT'S GOING ON" MAG handed out at the tower weekender. Agentsmith Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) here we go.....rose valentine & the sisters 3 when he's not there maurice mccallister your love is slipping away jimmy delphs - tony hestor eddie jefferson - i won't think twice joey heatherton - cindy scott billy hambrick - steve mancha gene mcdaniels - living through ( sleepless nights ) john & the wierdest - spyder turner & the webs the chessmen - like i never did before dee dee gartrell - over again deadbeats - the phantom janitor mel britt - i want my baby eddie daye & the 4 bars - frank wilson john leach - the showmen herbie williams - the lover who loves you not al williams - the masqueraders larry houston - top cat zz & company - oscar perry tamala lewis - sharon scott bobby thurston - al johnson & the hitmen rueben howell - sandy linzer ike strong - lee moore & the resourceful ones plus......the usual internationally known suspects, cecil washington & vicky baines and a whole host of one's he chose not to cover but probably had first and is credited for playing at the casino before anyone else did....look, you've probably seen all this before a million times over and chalky will point that out, cause he's about as anorak as it gets! ...it's called revelling in the nostalgia!! Agentsmith Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 so do we agree that richard was PROBABLY the architect of the cover-up scene and that guy took the game to an even more intriguing level with his imfamous " cover up the cover-ups" ploy?
macca Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Top geezer. I had the honour of 'supporting' him one night in Peterborough in 1978. I was just happy to buy him a beer and watch him weave his magic. He even let me hold Yvonne Vernee for a few seconds. Never forget that. A zeitgeist man in every way. We just rode the wave...
Agentsmith Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 probably would be about right,i think that it was Levine that made the whole cover-up thing more interesting, still think that Black ship to hell just should be the real title! Steve yeah, that was a great title..johnny adams band if i remember plus of course, jjohnny jackson experience "shingaling at the go-go" and one more: freddie jones "my heart's wide open"...those were the days!...i caught on fast...

Guest Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 OH my goodness - how did you find that??? Was DJing in Italy many years ago and heard it at the host DJs house...to say I was surprised was an understatement...to later find it on YouTube was pleasing! It came out on a 7" on Italian RCA. ;)

I heard it described as the Wigan walk To be honest when I started out in late 78 this is similar to the dance I did for a year or so, basically as it was a piece of pi€€ to do. Soon changed this though as it looked dire. Seems to have been a big resurgence in the East Mids on the nostalgia scene with this dance though with a few 'I'm a little tea pot' hand jives thrown in.
TOAD Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I have a white demo ? Tamala Lewis still not sure its real looks okay

Not all the EM's lads out and about at their preferred venues perform as you describe....in fact some of the best dancers still at it hale from those parts.

Not all the EM's lads out and about at their preferred venues perform as you describe....in fact some of the best dancers still at it hale from those parts.I didn't say all EM lads (or women) danced like that..I wouldn't lump my old mate Thommo in for example. Just that there's been a resurgence and used my area as an example. Perhaps it's a generation who touched on the scene for a year or so, left and brought back with them the formulaic walk having not had the chance to develop beyond the very basics after decades absence. Don't know about the difference in 2nd 3rd gen as stated wasn't there till late 78 ( not sure what gen that makes me) but back then and onwards there were some blinding dancers. But theres also the difference between the 4th, 5th, 6th and onwards (and those that might span all of these) Generations to the Wigan walk crew - these generations have seen many styles that have built on previous moves, so of these dancers that have taken styles, adapted and progressed them look great and long may the progress continue. I'll leave it at that as I feel an off topic bat flying in to slap me Edited June 21, 2013 by Byrney
doublecookin Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 (edited) Well bugger me I've got a tape from the very same night - taped on your recorder!! Would have been later in night after you'd finished, one or two repeats Paul Anka - when we get there Del Capris - Hey Little way out girl Teddy Vann - Coloured Man Herb Johnson - I'm So Glad Shawn Robinson - My Dear Heart Jason Knight - Our Love Is Getting Stronger Al Kent - You've Got To Pay The Price Spinners - I'll always Love You Bob Kuban - The Cheater ? - A Touch Of Velvet Earl Van Dyke - 6x6 Fi-Dels - Try A Little Harder Mamie Galore - It Aint Necessary Hesitations - I'm Not Built Johnny wyatt - This Thing Called Love Edward hamilton - Baby Dont You Weep Helen Shapiro - Stop & You'll Become Aware Joey Dee - How Can I Forget Sue Lynn - Dont Pity Me Walter Jackson - Where Have All The Flowers Gone Jerry Butler - Moody Woman Ambassadors - Too Much oF A Good Thing Showstoppers _ Houseparty Lou Roberts - Ten to One Tommy Bush - I Dont Like It Muriel Day - 9 times out of 10 Jewels - we Got Togetherness Dusk - Point Of No Return Bobby Goldsboro - Too Many People " " - Longer Than Forever Sergio Mendes - Love Music Dean Parrish - I'm On my Way Not vintage stuff by todays standards, but this was fabulous stuff for me at the time. I'd been going about 3 months at this time, aged 17 Things got better musically later that year and into 79. One unfortunate thing about this though is that even to this day the one record that reminds me of Wigan more than any other is Muriel Day I`ve got the exact same tape recording, I`d been in Mr M`s and came into the main room about sevenish for the last hour, mine starts at walter Jackson and finishes with the three before eight. A few years ago I copied it to cd, will have to dig it out and give it a blast. Edited June 21, 2013 by doublecookin 1
