Premium Stuff Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 (edited) Hi everyone I have a copy of the Showstopping Super Sonics - Ear Action (and You Better Quit It) / What Kind Of Girl Is She (Detroit Sound Records #2883). What an absolutely brilliant name for a group!! Always wanted a copy just for the name Sometimes seen listed as "D Records" - part of the De-To and Music Now set up. Seems quite rare. Apart from the above, I can't find out much about the group or record. Topside is a nice funk track. The flip is slow sweet soul. Scan is not my copy but nicked from Collectors Frenzy. Cheers Richard Edited June 17, 2013 by Premium Stuff
Premium Stuff Posted June 15, 2013 Author Posted June 15, 2013 Just pulled my copy and, like the copy in the scan above, it has a small inked stamp at the bottom just above the printed writing "Detroit Sound Recording Co." The stamp says P. 1974 on the top line and then underneath that DETROIT SOUND, INC. That dates it nicely Cheers Richard
boba Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 under the radar but in demand with sweet soul collectors. all copies I've had / seen have had annoying wear (maybe very light heat damage?).
Dave Thorley Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 One of Doc Kyles labels, the label design is simlar to his other label 'Now', which he owned along with De-To. Doc has been involved in the music business off and on for over 40 years. His main employ is as a consulting surgeon and runs a practise in Detroit along with his son. Think he may have had a couple of other labels also.
Premium Stuff Posted June 16, 2013 Author Posted June 16, 2013 (edited) Thanks Bob and Dave! Bob - never noticed any wear on my copy - pretty much a minter - will give it a good close inspection later though. I like the funk side - starts off a bit slow but then builds nicely - not 'funky edged northern' at all - but maybe 'northern-edged funk'? - with a capital "F". Any thoughts on value with either sweet or funk collectors anyone please? Cheers Richard Edited June 16, 2013 by Premium Stuff
Dave Thorley Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I sold a pretty clean one a couple of years ago at £50

Soulhawk Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I have a clean one & it plays with faint noise - pretty poor pressing the Don Hart connection is obvious from the label 'What Kind of Girl is She' had been previously done as 'What Kind of Man is He' by Chris Marshon on Orbit

Perfect on the funky "Ear Action" side. "What Kind Of Girl Is She" has a few very minor crackles in the quieter parts - hardly worth mentioning at all. Guess I was lucky with my copy Just searched my old emails and see I picked it up in late summer 2011 from eBay for the princely sum of 99p I have just knocked myself out with "What Kind Of Girl Is She" - it is just an immense record. Cheers Richard
