Book

Just read this yesterday, by Mark Windle on here, a really interesting read about some of the South East US 60s soul & garage acts like Greater Experience, The Appreciations, Anthony & Aqua lads, The Tempests etc etc.

Well worth getting for your holiday reading.

Glad you enjoyed it guys. Thanks for those scans Don and flogging your Chashers 45 to me, it features there too!

If anybody wants a copy of the book I'm on at Mill Lane soul night, Bradford, Saturday 8 June. PM me to reserve one, I'll be bringing some along.

Started working on part two already.....

And since I am singing its praises elsewhere, lets bump this. I bought the colour version as it looks great, only flicked through it but I have an appointment with my sofa in my record room in the near future to read through this. I suspect it will be one of those page turners where I don't surface till I finish.

If you haven't bought it, why not? Stuff like this needs recognised for all the work put into it.

Well done Mr Wendell Windle

Not bought a copy yet, the 'beach bands & garage bands' in the description has been putting me off a bit.

How much of the content (% wise) deals with soul acts ??

A worthwhile read.

Very little of it deals with 'garage bands' generically (in the sense of The Kingsmen or The Sonics) but it's fair to say that the whole phenomenon was so large that these acts were all in a sense 'garage bands'. A large amount of these groups in the South East used R&B as their template and immersed themselves in the whole thing: playing soul covers, backing soul artists and touring with the R&B stars of the day. In the region and at that time soul and R&B were the predominant mainstream pop music.

Particular highlight for me was seeing the photo of Scotty Todd performing. A shame he didn't make more records as his Philips 45 is one of the greatest of all Blue Eyed Soul recordings.

Roburt, it's all soul, worry not, and all but one of the 'bands/groups' related chapters deliberately focus on those associated with rare soul as played on the northern scene from the late seventies to the present. Regards beach stereotypes, preconceptions and misconceptions, well, I hope you find the book explores this before moving onto the real business of digging deeper.

The book sounds interesting, how much is it and where can I buy it? I've just looked on Amazon and couldn't find it. Any help appreciated.

Cheers for posting up the link Dave.

Three options Geoff: colour, PDF (follow the colour version link) or B&W.

I also have a few personal stock copies of B&W and colour if anyone wants to PM me. Postage will be a bit cheaper than online purchase.
