Linda4me Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Oh well - early doors to the pub tonight, got to be home for that! Looks like all three programmes start again at midnight so no early doors ( check the times just to make sure )
Daved Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Excellent. Arguably, the greatest singer of all time! 1
Windlesoul Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 (edited) Doing some research on the Astors for my next book at present - the communications director at the Stax-Soulville Foundation told me in passing that the Otis Redding thing is on tonight, he had a lot of input into the documentary. Autumnstoned Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Great Otis documentary - Wow the Stax revue in Norway film - think I've seen a clip of Hold On I'm Coming before but not the concert in full - fantastic ! 1
Alison H Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Great Otis documentary - Wow the Stax revue in Norway film - think I've seen a clip of Hold On I'm Coming before but not the concert in full - fantastic ! Agree, The Big O documentary was excellent! and Oh my giddy aunt, Sam & Daves performance was jaw dropping .... Pure Sex!!! (I'm allowed to say that, it's after the watershed) I'm loving it all!! 1
Guest CapitolSC Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 The Otis documentary on BBC4 was fantastic loads of footage never seen before and it gave a heads up to the Mod scene which embraced Soul and RnB when the powers that be would not play Black music on the radio. Stunning stuff and as we all know it was gonna in tragedy Very sad but the legacy he left us will live on for as long as there are Mods and Soul fanatics spreading the Faith Al H
Graym Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Agree, The Big O documentary was excellent! and Oh my giddy aunt, Sam & Daves performance was jaw dropping .... Pure Sex!!! (I'm allowed to say that, it's after the watershed) I'm loving it all!! Not sure about the sex but were they sneaky back-drops Sam dropped in there ?????????? Graham 1
Popular Post Roburt Posted May 31, 2013 Popular Post Posted May 31, 2013 Much respect to the BBC crew that made the documentary ...... obviously done with a lot of care & love. Reminds you just how great the big label stuff was (Stax, etc) ... it ain't all about obscure rarities. Mind you, it was Otis (+ Sam & Dave) that 1st got me into soul, so I might be a bit biased. 4
Seano Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Just got back from couple of days in beautifuly sunny Wales and turned on telly to find this, fantastic! Only caught the end of the Norway revue film, Sam and Dave and then Otis. Ridiculously good. I've now set to record the other programmes and the repeat of this one. 1
Alison H Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 Not sure about the sex but were they sneaky back-drops Sam dropped in there ?????????? Graham Pure Sex to me ;o) & Pure Stax to you guys :o) Can't recall any back drops? Plenty of fancy footwork, hip action, powerful vocals, & lots & lots of sweat ... Beautiful !!! (Right, I'm going to have to stop thinking, or writing about their performance lolol) What a great Friday night in with BBC4 !! Ali

Windlesoul Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 (edited) Solomon Burke -Don't give up on me Just sublime! Had Annette in tears (in a good way though) - and me too! Sure this snippet was from Jool's hootenany thingie and I remember it stopped me in my tracks then. Truly soulful performance. Edited June 1, 2013 by Windlesoul 3
Guest frenchie Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Bloody Fantastic That Stax Volt revue footage was sublime.. no other words!!
Alison H Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Not sure about the sex but were they sneaky back-drops Sam dropped in there ?????????? Graham Apologies Graham, I've just watched it for the second time tonight & he did slip one in :o) Regards Ali
Alison H Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Solomon Burke -Don't give up on me Just sublime! Had Annette in tears (in a good way though) - and me too! Sure this snippet was from Jools hogmanay show and I remember it stopped me in my tracks then. Truely soulful performance. Incredible he was, & it amazed me even more how he did it so effortlessly, while sitting down in his comfy chair (alright it was a throne, but not very nice of me to say he did it so effortlessly while sitting on the throne) Most singers have to be standing up to belt it out, not King Solomon Will you tell Annette I said Hi x
Steve L Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Sounds like it was good, I've recorded em all so thats my Saturday night stopping in entertainment sorted along with a bottle of something nice

Zoomsoulblue Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 If its what I think it is, the Sam and Dave footage is incredible Kev This was taken in 1967 - look at either sam or dave halway through the dancing - the guy does a back drop forget the wheel , torch and casino these guys were years ahead of there time - top marks -
Kev Cane Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 When you watch Sam and Dave, the show they put on and the fact they hated each other, what would it have been like if they had loved each other, still. incredible, I have some other footage somewhere, where they are doing "You don,t know like i know" where the whole place is rocking (not like Norway), it drains you just watching them, INCREDIBLE Kev
Steve Foran Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Anyone able to name the 3 girls backing Aretha. Great watch!
Alison H Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Anyone able to name the 3 girls backing Aretha. Great watch! Only saw them for a second, but it looked like the Supremes to me, or were they The Primettes then?
Ceejay Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 (edited) Only saw them for a second, but it looked like the Supremes to me, or were they The Primettes then? Think her backing singers were called the Sweet Inspirations.......Cissy Houston was one of the members................. and she sometimes had her sisters as backing singers. Quinvy Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Very enjoyable night that was. Would have been superb to have witnessed these artists in their pomp. The Gladys Knight & the Pips clip just showed what an incredible act they were. Totally effortless performance. Just a shame that the song was one of their worst.
Rick Cooper Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 When you watch Sam and Dave, the show they put on and the fact they hated each other, what would it have been like if they had loved each other, still. incredible, I have some other footage somewhere, where they are doing "You don,t know like i know" where the whole place is rocking (not like Norway), it drains you just watching them, INCREDIBLE Kev The Sam and Dave Norway show I've seen on a DVD before and is nothing like the shows they did in the UK . At a very tender age, my older brother and his mates took me to see Sam and Dave at the Manchester Odeon. It was a package tour with other Stax and Atlantic artists, possibly Joe Tex and Eddie Floyd but Sam and Dave blew the roof off. As soon as they came on the audience went wild , unlike the Norwegians who seemed very restrained or put off by the military looking security. Sam and Dave gave a brilliant performance with two or three encores , and really seemed to be enjoying themselves, no sign of any bad feelings between them. The band added to the show with great playing and moves, truly memorable and very impressionable to a young lad of thirteen. The Otis concert footage was awesome and shows what a tragedy his early death was. Next Friday (June 7th) 9 pm BBC 4 have a Bobby Womack documentary followed by a 1971 Ike and Tina Turner and Wilson Pickett concert. Rick 2
Arabica Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 I was so fortunate to see Sam & Dave live in Nottingham must have been the same time I was just well amazed effected by the performance and the dance moves, always state that I was influenced by their footwork, and still like a wee dance to soothe me, as for the Norway footage I have seen this before and have it on dvd always great to see,Regards Mal

Guest Andy Carling Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Makes you wonder how different soul music would be if he hadn't got on that plane with the bar-kays.Always been a big fan, even the slow stuff.Andy Edited June 3, 2013 by soul in the shed
hullsoul Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Makes you wonder how different soul music would be if he hadn't got on that plane with the bar-kays. Always been a big fan, even the slow stuff. Andy He had already overtaken Elvis as voted top singer,so who knows? It was nice that the Brits got a lot of credit for loving the music. Cheers Martyn
Johnlloyd Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Anyone else notice that those buying Stax records before Otis crossed over to the pop buying public were refered to as "anoracs". Surely well informed, hip, ahead of their time, would have been better. John 1
Rob Moss Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Thoroughly enjoyed both programmes. Such a pity that it took the BBC so long to make the Otis one and show the 'live' show. Very annoying that they've been sitting on this stuff for such a long time. Wonder what else is available.
Britmusicsoulfan Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Can someone post the link to the BBC iPlayer for these? Cheers.
Autumnstoned Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Can someone post the link to the BBC iPlayer for these? Cheers. There is a link in the 1st post to this thread. After opening the webpage, there is a further link to the Stax Revue film. Link here too:- https://www.bbc.co.uk...rammes/b020tphg Edited June 3, 2013 by autumnstoned
