Patterson Twins Gonna Find A True Love

Instantly interesting 70s club intro is swept aside as The Patterson Twins inject the level of soul that Southern Soul exponent Terry Woodford intended it to be sung with.

It’s one of those songs that just enters your heart on the first hearing and remains filed in the favourite part of you brain with your feet awaiting patiently for it’s next visit.

Blending Southern soul lyrics with a Bongo driven dance arrangement can be no easy task. A task made easier by the intensity of the lead vocals and the depth of the girl-group chorus. What you have is SOUL woven into a great dance production…

What more does a dance-floor require…?

Johnny Ace Mermorial Album

The mythical 1961 British original FIRST press!

The Godfather of Deep Soul - the first artist I heard perform what was to become the platform for the likes of Otis Redding, Percry Sledge, Arthur Conley to spring from.

This album is a tribute to a man ahead of his time, the founder of the aching soul ballad with “Pledging My Love” becoming a trailblazing standard for the emotional lament and arguably the birth of “Soul”.

This Memphian tragically died, accidentally in 1954, perhaps after that great recording he was “called” to a higher place.

Whilst collecting British release “Soul” albums there is no “higher Place” than this ridiculously hard to acquire rarity!

The fully laminated cover is immaculate, labels has a small initial on it, vinyl has some light insignificant surface blemishes, as you can hear it plays superbly clean, clear & true!

Metros Since I Found My Baby C/w No Baby

PIED PIPER! in it’s most-desirable form

This is the seldom witnessed 1966 German press complete with a very neat & tidy picture sleeve.

I must have heard “Since I found My Baby” countless times in my life but the magic of the Pied Piper production always makes it a fresh experience, which brings seamlessly to my next comment; How darn good is the flipside which I’ve heard only a very few times in my time on the planet.

This tune is every note as good, has been undeservedly neglected over the decades of it’s twin evolving into a timeless Northern Soul classic. From now on none of us has any excuse for playing the obvious - flip it over and turn a few heads.

Then show the turntable voyeurs the label and that magnificent sleeve - that few collectors can boast of owning.

Sea Shells Quiet Home C/w Another Tear Must Fall

Utterly delicious Detroit exquisitely constructed by the one and only Mike Terry. Surely only “the Sax-God” could weave such as eerie atmospheric girl-group session and still make it a truly enchanting Northern Soul winner.

It has been quite some while since I’ve seen or heard this truly beautiful tune and how welcome is it, to my ears this 45 never received the full attention it deserved first time round in the 80s, surely a strong renaissance beckons for this Terry-tantalizer from the top-drawer!

Groovers I'm A Bashful Guy C/w Just Go For Me

The real-heroes of Northern Soul, there are many but not many as consistent as Leonard Jewel Smith Smith. Here are twon of his best on one of te world’s most-wanted labels.

Most everything this Los Angeles genius touched met all the criteria that would, in later years, be considered fine Northern Soul. This example is a double-helping of this man’s gift for the 60s dance recording.

Aided by Jimmy & Ben Gresham the 3 get everything right! Topside is a vocal group gem, supported by blaring horns, persistent piano and his teammates wailing chorus and the compulsory instrumental..the lead vocal just spews out the poetic lyrics. Validating my statement that Leonard does not miss a trick whilst building a session.

On the flipside the team display their versatility with the addition of a prominent Mike Terry style saxophone, prompting a soothing mid-tempo harmony stroller.

Two terrific sides - but that what we expect from Leonard “THE JEWEL” Smith.

Blues & Soul No. 5 No. 5 February 1968

Ironically Otis Redding’s tragic death December 10, 1967 went unreported in issue #4 January 1968 as Blues & Soul had already gone to press, editorial being prepared early to allow for Christmas. So, it was nearly 2 months later when this iconic magazine could report on the King’s passing.

This issue contains “The Otis Redding Story” plus 3 full page Otis pics. Other artist bios and pics include. The O’Jays, O. V. Wright* pictured + bio, The Bar-Kays, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell.

Plus the feature L-I-V-E which reviews 4 live acts witnessed in the UK in January: Gladys Knight & the pips, Eddie Floyd, Felice Taylor - her debut appearance &Chris Clark.

plus the charts and reviews on new vinyl releases.

This copy is in the finest condition possible;e it looks like the day it arrived in the mail, February 1968.

Conquistadors Sadness And Madness C/w Lonely Was I

Two sides of vocal-group Northern Soul that are at last starting to receive attention.

Top side is the one that used to send a shivers through you, when hearing it’s frantically paced arrangement, showcasing the slick team work of this Chicago vocal group gathering. Upbeat proper, foot-to-the-floor adrenaline rushing Northern Soul for gymnasts only.

But in more recent times it’s the easier to dance to, decidedly soulful harmony dance-groove that has been catching the turntables of the upfront NS Jocks.

This 45 has always been a tough-to find rarity - as a WHITE PROMO copy n “like New” condition - I think it could well become a future trophy-piece, as this recording has a long, long way to go to reach it’s peak of awareness.

Two great sides just saturated in NS potential ..

Dorsey Burnette Jimmy Brown C/w Everybody's Angel

EMI’s decision to release this Motown country-subsiduary “Melody 116” recording ran against all common sense. The label was building a huge cult-following in the UK in 1965 as the Motown Sound was the “IN” club music.

What must those more-dedicated Soul collectors have thought as the ordered another Tamla Motown release from the Friday “release sheets” and received this on the Tuesday; and I wonder how many tried to renege on the order.

Thus the legendary UK TMG 534 serious rarity was born.

They did the same same mistake 3 releases later with Tony Martin’s - The Bigger Your Heart Is - after that, you would like to think, there was a dismissal of an EMI executive. Then was back to usual business with uninterrupted wave after wave of Motown hits.

But if you like 1000’s of others you collect TMG 500 series, t=you will not need reminding how essential this release is to own. As a Red & White DEMO in Mint - pristine condition it is perhaps the most wanted “horrid” 45 on Planet Earth.

TMG 534 immaculate DEMO - you will not locate a finer copy!

So just do it!

Joe Wilson Headed For A Fall C/w Goddess Of Love

Stomping New Orleans rarity - on a label that again is causing huge interest on forums as they debate the wealth of rare soul vinyl this Crescent City enterprise churned out.

Before you today is one of it’s seriously RARE 45s; A great-big-hunk of Northern Soul that just drips with the capacity to cause-dance-floor-harm. The uncompromising brass production is enriched by Joe’s snarling voice and off we go.

This guy was sadly under-recorded, sensational voice with a focused delivery on all his few recordings. Check out his UK Pye release “When A Man Cries c/w Sweetness” because it could possibly be the only way you’ll be sure of owning some of the man’s work.

This is RARE - widely unknown, just begging for the right DJ to get it to those hungry masses gagging for new NS stompers to throw themselves around to.

SUE - BOYS this is the incredibly elusive 1965 UK press covering his pre-Sansu era and his work on the Fury label.

This copy has pristine vinyl & labels - cover both front & back only reveals light age wear and as the scan reveal only minimal insignificant creasing.

Rare, Rare, Rare album on Britain’s most-collectable label.

Lloyd & Glenn What You've Got C/w Feel Good Now

Hidden on the flipside of this revered SKA label is a thumpin’ horn-forced Northern Soul dancer, relentless in it’s power & attitude!

Check out this stomper, that encapsulates the 60s London MOD, that more and more artists of the period tried to emulate the records feeding the all night Club-Scene; Most likely inspired by Stax & Atlantic recordings that pleasured the club-faithful of the era, Lloyd Robinson & Glenn Brown capture that atmosphere completely, serving up what is today still the right sound to make ‘em move.

Flip side will also cause interest from the SKA collectors - the label will cause interest from everyone!

Lynne Randell Stranger In My Arms + Picture Sleeve

The beautiful London born Lynne Randell - moved to Australia as a little girl and by the age of 16 she was a celebrity.

How, as a 17 year old she came under the tutorship of the “great” Bob Crewe is unknown to me. But what a combination with Lynne’s vocal prowess and the inimitable New York team of Bob Crewe, Gary Knight, Herb Bernstein & Ted Cooper crafting yet another Northern Soul monster!

Amazingly this Blackpool Mecca, Catacombs & early Wigan Casino dance-floor-pleaser originally sat on a the B-side of a rather ordinary pop recording, until those Northern Soul pioneers again struck “gold” when the rare UK CBS release was discovered.

Before you today is this Northern Soul timeless classic, in it’s most-wanted, least seen USA original format. A seldom-seen yellow STOCK copy complete with Picture Sleeve with the gorgeous Lynne in triplicate and a bio on the back cover.

Metaphors Come On Back (to Me) C/w You Have Everything (that A Man Could Love)

SWEET SOUL HEAVEN - twice over.

Seriously obscure Jimi Ingram project giving up two delicious harmony ballads featuring an icy falsetto lead cradled by elaborate group-support, forming a lush vocal expanse that the lead-vocal pierces with emotional high-pitched pleas…just fabulous.

But flip it over and the quality does not dip for a second as the same formula is followed, with same effect, a sweet soul understanding of epic [proportions.

I repeat - SWEET SOUL HEAVEN - twice over!

Tommy Ridgley My Love Gets Stronger

I just adore this record! Could you ever tire of such simplistic genius!

Tommy’s soulful-purring is embroidered with some of the finest girl-group backing you could ever wish to encounter. The mix of of the male lead and the heavenly ladies voices is something rather special especially when the ladies drop down a few keys during those timely horn driven instrumental breaks, creating an unparalleled atmospheric dance experience.

THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL - at it’s most-magnificent!
