soulfulsaint Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Don't forget this is now a 'world classic' - being a record that is seen as Wigan's big closer almost every rare soul fan has heard of it. I think the ad-men would call it a 'hero-brand'. Its now very hard to get don't be surprised if it goes up further .
Soulsmith Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 Still play the 3 before 8 at our local oldies do. People love them, but personally I am sick to the back teeth of them.
Paul Byford 1 Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Neither the Blue or yellow Tobi Legend Mala issues come up much..think it would go alot higher than that now.
pikeys dog Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Bought a demo in Vegas at Xmas... not bad for $12. 2
Ted Massey Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 its crazy theres a rare Velvet satins red isue on one site at 350 quid i have one for set sale at 225 and posted it on face book sales as well 1

Guest Droylsdonian Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Over-rated imco now, tho I bought it back in the day. Got the melodrama, hook lines & melancholia, but no classic.

Yellow label but no "Promotional Copy Plug Side" text on label - https://www.popsike.com/TOBI-LEGEND-rare-northern-soul-Time-Will-Pass-You-By-45/190518324271.html Anyone confirm if this variation always has a cut out drill hole in the label?

It played fine for DJ'ing but looked as rough as ar*eholes. To be honest I thought it may go for a bit more as you just never see issues. Anyhow, I was happy with the outcome. Would love to get one back but as I'm not collecting any more it would hardly be worth it. Steve H

Agentsmith Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 i think we agree on tobi being a great record but if you dont agree that tim`s old book is miles out with some of the values then youd be wrong.. but it is 6 or 7 years old now..johns book isnt great and his is only 2 years old. tims book is online now and says its been updated but everything ive looked for, which is a lot is prety much the same.....only ever had the one chance to buy an issue but passed on it coz i already had the demo.. issue is a rare collectors piece and will probably make a grand a least if its on johns auctions you're correct on that bro, ive the first book...i think when tim did the reappraisal a couple of years later the prices where closer to the mark, but we have to face facts, the market today is all over the place...but then its global isnt it?, it just goes to show how obsessed folks have become with collecting vinyl as it is, without doubt, SECOND ONLY to antiques as the most expensive past time on the planet....for the simple reason...these black shiny creations, wether vinyl or 78's, in 7" or lp format, are a unique antique marketplace theirselves. i would imagine that outside of actual supremely obscure record labels, tobi's resume is, more or less, one of the most priceless in existance...but, at the end of the day its whats in the grooves that counts and the lark & ledgend is a sound beyond comparison ( linda jones accepted ). heart of hearts dave, YOU WILL NEVER TIRE OF "TIME", because its "timeless",...the most evocative lyrics that can drive people to the dancefloor in a tidalwave. 1
Soulman Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Do you mean the Blue one ? i can't recall ever seeing another one of them Yes, the blue issue that's on Popsike, that was the one I sold on e-Bay. I'd had it for many years and was always told how rare it was. Still, it's gone now. Hey ho!!! Steve
DennieFitz Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Bloody hell Mark I have got that record made my day x x

The blue copy was sold to Tim in the 80s. Edited June 16, 2012 by davetay
Pete S Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 I've had it as well. When demo was 150 and issue was 250.
Agentsmith Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 actually, a slight reappraisal on the artist's catalogue and i can also assure connoiseurs not grudgingly, ty karim's output PROBABLY is worth significantly more,....outrageous prices for items in infinitely minute quantities but all knowingly brilliant and a voice different in many ways from tobi's, a delightful little croak as compared to a warble...boy, if we could all just afford em, they'd be in our collections. perhaps we can persue this aside in another thread...suggestions please for other artists catalogues and collective values?
Julianb Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Bought a mint issue off Swifty in 2006 - £250. Happy! Julian

snooky Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I got the Blue issue from JM.....all time fave...sold last one 35 years ago to Tony Worrot!!! I gave to Dave Thorley as a gift!!!!as i did promise to give to him one day You can not see hairline crack, otherwise in mint condition snooky :)
Jerry Hipkiss Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 You can not see hairline crack, otherwise in mint condition snooky :) Drill holes through those "plastic" Mala issues - recipe for disaster! Looks good though Steve!

snooky Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Hi Jerry yeah has a drill hole with wax holding it together... my last one never had a drill hole...!! Its in Dave Thorley's safe hands now....
Jerry Hipkiss Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Hi Jerry yeah has a drill hole with wax holding it together... my last one never had a drill hole...!! Its in Dave Thorley's safe hands now.... I know - was looking at it the other day!
Roburt Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Going back to a much earlier question on this thread .... Dave Godin had numerous (x 20) boxes of the issue (without drill holes) at Soul City shop from just after it was released in the US. So it can't be too rare on yellow issue without drill holes.
Guest Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 (edited) Got the melodrama, hook lines & melancholia, but no classic. One of the most well know Northern soul records, with its own special place in the history of Wigan Casino, Most people have really liked it at one time or another. It still gets played and is popular. An original can make decent money. I think it qualifies as a classic! Edited July 10, 2012 by Guest

I don't dispute its place in NS history & , like I said, I bought it @ the time (boot); for a lass, probably :-) But it is a tad sickly, over-emotional & contrived, I feel. A bit like 'Love Bandit', which I also have (original). Now either of those 2 is worth a million Armada Orchestras, but they just ain't raw enough for me.

How is it possible for a soul record to be over-emotional,thats what the music is all about.Superb record seen it reduce men to tears and played at many a soulies funeral.Like it or not T.W P Y B and the other 2 of the 3 before 8 are Northern Souls crown Jewels. Also to compare it to Love Bandit is like Comparing Barcelona F.C to Accrington Stanley 2
Guest Droylsdonian Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 'I'm on my way' is a classic as well is it? I doubt it pal. A very run of the mill record that had a relevance to the particular moment, but get real. And I compared Keanya & Tobi because they were always girly favourites, that's all. Crown Jewels? Why - coz you remember them? I've said it b4 & I'll say it again - there was some real shite played @ Casino & Mecca. Imagine travelling from, say, Lands End or John O'Groats to hear Tommy Hunt, eh?

Yes Crown jewels coz thats what they are and i do remember them just like i remember lots of great stuff during my 40 plus years on the soul scene.Yes I'm On My Way is in my opinion also a classic along with Jimmy Radcliffe. They are not what i like to hear out these days as i prefere to hear stuff away from the same old oldies. However you can't understate the esteme that Tobi Legend is held in by Northern Soul fans its a slab of vinyl royalty.Yes there was some real crap played at the Casino but the 3 before 8 are not in the same league as Tommy Hunt with respect. Each to their own opinions mate not worth argueing about but just thought that your description of Tobi Legend as contrived and over-emotional was strange and an opinion i have never heard before. What would have been your ideal nighter ender out of interest. 1
