Sad to say  Danny Daniels passed away last Thursday night,I only found out today from someone close to Danny who had been trying to phone me last couple of days to let me know.Danny was a real diamond, litle but larger than life with a massive personality, for many years now he has suffered from severe rhuematoid arthritis,of recent years needing a wheelchair to get about and previous to that a zimmer frame.

No one who ever saw Danny spin will ever forget it,him and his mate Billy were the best in the biz, when Danny won the dancing competition at Wigan(the one of moped  prize fame I think he was only fifteen but Paul Donnely would know more about that as it was him Danny used to go Wigan with.Yet one more instance of videocams coming to late back then to film Danny in action but he lives on in all our memories who saw him dance.

Everyone who knew the lad liked him ,inside Danny was a fighter who always tried to stay on top of his illness, see ya Danny and thanks for letting me know you  Manus.

Heard about this the other day through Paul Donnellys post :(

Very sad. Yes he was the best spinner i have ever seen. Happy days way back when. I remember the winning of the moped - he only entered to win a few quid bless him.

A brilliant lad from my past

RIP Danny

Knew him too, right back to the Tuesday night discos at the Wirrina in 1974 when he would blow people away dancing to stuff like Needle In A Haystack. I think Bill & Paul schooled him in the moves, but the creativity was purely his. He's the only guy I've seen win a dance comp without resorting to 'stunts'. Last saw him in the late 80s or early 90s. Always a smiling face. RIP Steve.

I'm not sure if mine or Danny's paths crossed - you never know who you know over the years.

Anyway, that mattters not and I am sorry to hear that he has passed away.

Bless you Danny boy.

Peter

Macca no matter how ill Danny got he always managed that smile and his personality always shone through.

If my memory serves me well Manus, it was the second anniversary the place was packed, I remember Danny little fellow with red hair, when he was spinning everyone just cleared the area so fast didn't know when he was going to stop, thats all he did all night just spin, with time and accuracy. He was with some lads from Peterborough I believe he was with Paul Donelly when it came to the competition, we were saying you gotta go in for it Danny you're in top flight, the first anniversary was on the stage and the second was on the main floor. All the rest of the dancers were doing their bit on the floor, and Danny was just spinning unbelievable and he won it. I'm not too sure he went into the army a year later. One of the top 3 spinners in my book. RIP Danny you brought so many smiles to people faces when you were on the dance floor. Cheers Billy

Word got around afterwards that he had to be 'guarded' for the rest of the night, Billy, due to the considerable prize money he'd won. Wigan could be intimidating back then. Paul will confirm this...

I never knew that he was guarded for the rest of the night macca, wigan was intimidating place to be, at most times still a great place to be if you're looking for action cheers Billy

Thats right Billy,I was living in Corby at the time it was the second anniverse,I was talking to him a few weeks ago about it and as Macca said he was reallty worried about a certain group of blokes who he and others with him from pboro thought wanted to relieve him of his cash.,he said it really put the jitters up him.

About Dannys spinning though, magic a lovely thing to see as you know,he wasnt like many you see these days who seem like theyre running round on the spot with both feet for nost of thier spin,Danny was one fixed point and revolve round that, slowing down and speeding up by using his arms and his dance steps fitted as they should with the spin artistic expression as they say in the olympics,10,10 and 10 and a half ,off the chart.Dannys mate Bill who I  know is still around used to spin with the same style as Danny but he was much taller, the two of them together would spin anyone of the floor. In my own personal opinion,I know loads go for Booper but for me it was Danny and Bill closely followed by Irish.Bloody videocams, they would come along a few years to late to have captured him at his best.

Danny did go into the army as you say but I think it was more than a year after but not sureI saw Danny doing his thing  time back at nighters but didnt know him above saying hello as I lived in Corby and had my own crew of mates it was only years later when I moved to Peterborough that I met him again but by this time he was just starting to get ill which of course got worse over the years till he couldnt walk without a wheelchair.I feel priviledged really to say I got to know Danny pretty well over the years and what impressed itself on me more than anything else was his warmth of personality that always shone through no matter how bad he was, believe me Danny has been through some very tough times and come through them all with still a smile and warm welcome for all, that is the  smile Macca is on about. In fact when I think of Danny what I will remember more than anything else above his dancing amazing as it was is that smile and personality that he never lost and how he kept his spirit up in such an unbelievable way through so  much illness and we could still sit and talk and have a good laugh about things,I dont think I could have done it and Danny as Ive said had enough for ten folk to cope with never mind one.He will be missed by a lot of people,God bless you Danny

andy peake being one of the others awsome rip danny

Did Andy use to have long hair and wear very baggy patchwork denim jeans? I think I knew him. I knew Danny via Peterborough and St Ives then he went to WC. I made the semis of the dance comp the year he won it. Went EVERY weekend to WC from Easter to the annivesary. Christ to be young again. Danny, Jethro and Pete from Hemel were probably the best dancers I saw. RIP Danny.

  • 4 weeks later...

This Pic of myself on the left and Bill Bingham at the Peterborough all nighter in 1974 picture Taken by Danny Daniels RIP

We were all very close friends from Cambridgeshire and the lads were top dancers from Cambs (Peterbro) Danny went on to  win the Casino dance comp 1975 we all worked hard at perfecting our spinning Technics out on the floor.

In my opinion Danny was to become one of the best speed wise to Squeek (Andy Peake) from Wolvo a Cats local I would say Danny was more consistent with good technic.

The Cats turned out some of the best dancers and top spinners I have known, my mate Gethro for one the best all round dancer. Jacko great spinner and Squeek who was by far the fastest spinner on the Casino floor at that time 73/74.

Frank Booper Ex Wheeler set the Bar for us all to better. It was just about bettering your self as a dancer with the up most respect for others on the floor not winning a competition witch I am sure Danny would have agreed with. I guess the though of winning a few pounds for doing what you did best always would have come in handy when you were only earning about £10 a week as a teenager lol.

He had a very stylish step in and out of the spin as someone said in one of the comments ,"artistic content  ten out of ten",oh how good it would have been to capture him,Bill ,yourself on video but they just weren't around then I think a lot of folk now  would these days just stand wide eyed and slack jawed watching the videos if there was any, probably a few saying"Naw that aint possible! they cant do that",but it was!and they did.

Unique style just about sums Danny up when it came pulling of a spin. The start and the end just as important as the middle bit, that's what made it all flow. When your in full flight it looks much the same as the rest well almost !!! How you got there and came out of a spin without wiping out half the dance floor was the key. He sure had that mastered. As for video there was hardly a camera around then. I guess you wouldn't have had one very long lol and cameras were keep well away from the dance floor. But I know were your coming from on that score. There sure are a few parts to a spin never copied, only because the factor of timing started in your head in the way of feeling it, doing it,and what it lead to next, when a particular record was being played that's wot ya call being in the zone and Danny managed that very well as did Bill.
