As an album only collector nowadays I am very happily surprised at the number of quality tracks unearthed in recent years by d.j.'s and played out around the country from the huge number of Gospel albums out there . I have picked up a few over the last couple of years primarily for the odd track played out as a 45 " but managed to get it cheaper on the album , SO any recommendations out there ......???

... AND ... many gospel albums (& 45's) were vanity projects organised by the group / singer themselves.

They would pay for time in a local studio & record 2 or 9/10 tracks from their current live show list. Then get a few (100, 500) copies pressed up to sell at their gigs (of a 45 or LP).

So the records went to church goers, not record collectors & so quickly disappeared from view.

Some tracks only ever made it onto recording studio acetates and so are really rare ...........

On the "Modern Soul" tip.............

If you're interested in contemporary inspirational/gospel soul and it doesn't have to be vinyl, I can list loads!!

Spot the melody........

Been a massive "ender" type tune at modern gigs since it's release...........

Cheers,

On the "Modern Soul" /quote]

Don Thomas is a cracking tune

A big SeArling play on Radio Hallam and at Clifton Halls.

And on the subject of Dickie Wonder..........here's one from the top of his pile from his 1991(?) Soul Sauce chart. See, one of the things that sets Richard apart from others is that he love SOUL MUSIC, not just Northern Soul music. I like that in a person! ;-))

A euphoric uplifting piece of inspirational soul..........brilliant..........

Cheers,

Two very smart compilations.....however, if you're looking for original pressings, there's only one or two tracks included on Apocryphal Hymns that are from LP's....the rest are all 45's.

Andre Crouch - Got Me Some Angels

From the 'No Time To Lose' album - can't find the album cut just this live version - nice dancer on the album.

Didn't know that, I remember it from Stafford, used to get copies in a Gospel shop in Pekham I think it was and take them up with us to sell.

Yep, Richard was on Radio Hallam (Sheffield) from around 1980 to 1986 and he was DJing at Rotherham Clifton Halls over approx the same period ....

... he played loads of great newly released US indie soul / major label soul / gospel during that period ...

I THINK the Donn Thomas 'You're The One' album was one he played from it being a new release (he deffo played it soon after if not from when it first came out in 81).

Not saying you're wrong Rob but I don't remember him or anyone playing it at Rotherham.

He must have done as I recall dancing to it on a regular basis at nighters he DJ'ed at back then ..... and as I lived in Worksop, I was too old to make it back from any nighters much further afield than Roderum then.

Only made it to the likes of Stafford, Hinckley, the Ritz, Loughboro, Leicester, Huddersfield & Bradford on the odd occasion.

Liked the Donn Thomas track so much, I bought a copy of the LP mesen at the time.

Mind you I only said that I THINK Richard was playing it as early as 81, my memory is a bit shot these days.

Have to pull out some old copies of Blackbeat mag to check the venue reviews for confirmation.

Dorothy Norwood 'He is a friend' (Jewel)

Camille Doughty 'God's prescriptions' (Label)

Rev. T.L. Barrett 'Like a ship' (Mt. Zion Baptist Church)

Children of Israel 'Jesus is a friend of mine' (Label)

The Sons of Truth 'A message from the ghetto' (Gospel Truth)

The Metro-tones, Inc. 'Get together' (Savoy)

Clarence Smith 'What happened to love' (Gospel Truth)

The Twilights 'Stand up' (Rae Cox)

The Trumpelettes 'Gods creation' (Bos)

The Mighty Gospel Giants 'Let there be peace' (Minit)

The New Generation 'Same God' (Lark)

Louise McCord 'A tribute to Mahalia Jackson' (Gospel Truth)

The Holy Disciples of Chicago, Ill. 'My soul needs resting' (Abec)

The Sensational Prodigal Sons 'No sunshine in a storm' (Richburg)

Stevie Hawkins 'Two wings' (Checker)

The Sensational Skylarks 'Tree of life' (Sensational Skylarks)

The Singing Larks 'God loves us all' (Label)

Getting back on topic ...........

... here's a brand new gospel release that sounds good (if you can accept electronic backing) .........

.... the guy was on the Pittsburgh soul / funk scene a the end of the 70's through the early 80's ....

Just D/L'd 4 of the 8 tracks on this earlier this week..........probably should have bought the CD!!

theres a very good fast driving version of "Wade in the Water" by Jessy Dixon and the Chicago Community Choir on Savoy..super dancer...i dont think its on 45....ive got it on the Best of Jessy Dixon double LP Savoy SGL7021.(I like it so much ive got 3 copies)..the orig LP(a rare one) is "These heavy burdens wont last always" on Gospel MG 3055..... :shades:

I really enjoy the gospel comp "Oh Graveyard You Can't Hold Me Always" on Mississippi Records, fabulous collection that one is. Especially the first track "Eternal Life" by the Mosby Family Singers, so haunting. Would definitely recommend that one, never seen a 45 or LP with that track on it, though I'm sure it must exist.

its included at the 43:15 mark on this gospel mix:

Here's a few from me (not checked properly if Greg has already tipped some of these) ........

Mildred Clarke & Melody Aires -- Change in the World (ABC)

Canton Spirituals   --    Determined    (J&B)

Willie Banks & Messengers -- Show Me The Way (HSE)

Willie Banks & Messengers  ---  Mother Why (HSE)

Wanda Nero Butler  -- Reach For His Love (Secret)

Daniel Winans & 2nd Half  --  Self titled (Rejoice)

....ones that didn't grab me as much as I had expected .......

East St Louis Gospelettes  -- Watch Me (Checker)

Sensational Nightingales  -- My Sisters & Brothers (ABC)

AND OF COURSE ....

... don't forget there's good stuff from gospel heavyweights such as the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Al Greene, Jessy Dixon, the Winans, Rance Allen, Yolanda Adams, Mary, Mary & more ..... AND ... its hard to buy anything not worthy from the Soul Stirrers & Violinaires.

A good (easy & cheap) place to start to learn which gospel acts you like stuff by is to get the Harmless 2fer CD 'HOLY SPIRIT' .....

not TOO SURE who compiled it but he certainly has got that Divine Chord off to a tee (has Fantastic Violinaires "I'm Not Worried" on there).

Yeah, it is available on LP too, but it's still fairly tricky to come across....top end should be no more than $100, but first you gotta find one, and then a copy that's clean.

A gospel dancer I really like is Rev Marvin Yancy (yep, the guy who wrote / produced lots of Chicago soul in the 70's) on "Step By Step".

Other good CD's to buy to find more tracks you like are .........

'Experience Gospel -- Soulful Side of Gospel'

'Gospel In The Groove'

'Detroit Gospel'

'Raise Da Roof' ......... (you can get a copy of 2 different volumes of this series on Amazon at present for pennies)

AND many of the 'WOW Gospel' compilations (they put out one a year & have done for about the last 12 years).

This Be Be & Ce Ce Winans album (from 84) is good throughout ('Lord Lift Us Up') ........

.... (the PTL label version is rare but I think it was re-released on anuda label later) .....

.... this track being the best dancer on it ...

A great UK comp LP to look out for is 'The Soul of Black Music' (on Sonet from 1979) ....

14 gospel tracks from the likes of Gospel Keynotes, Supreme Angels, Bright Stars, Consolers & more.

I have a spare copy somewhere but it don't have an original cover.

Here's the Supreme Angels track .........

The Gospel Harmatones 'The old wheelchair' is a great listen from start to finish.....really awesome coupla crossover tracks on here too!
