An old friend of mine lives in Moss Side, he always talked about 'blues' nights (not in the music sense), it was a reggae thing, they have parties in each other houses, drinking and dancing, always sounded like great fun, suppose same type of thing?

Great lad, real character, real nice guy, I knew him very well, he was one of the Warrington crowd really, adopted scouser.

ps last time i saw pete smith from widnes was in the old runcorn Rna soul night on a tuesday 1977 ish not seen him since,

 

most scoucers who got into the northern scene are the ones who moved out liverpool in the late sixties and early seventies me included, to local towns  , widnes , runcorn, st helens ,winsford , southport ,  to this day i aint met a scoucer into northern who has lived in liverpool all his life , i have met some but not many over the years that went to allnighters  , but didnt live in liverpool , met the skem boys in wigan once or twice when with libby and dusty . atb Eddy

Now at the risk of sounding scousist I've always wondered why Liverpool hasn't had a major impact on our soul club scene. For a major city it defined youth music culture during the sixties with the emergence of the Beatles & the ‘Cavern Club’. When punk spat its way into the late seventies 'Erics' was the place to be. 'Cream' became one of the first super clubs on the house scene throughout the nineties. On a football point of view they've got 2 major premiership teams and their followers took football hooliganism onto new levels during the eighties. So youth wise Liverpool and the Merseyside area has really marked its place out on UK street culture. But why no northern scene as such within the L postcode? I mean given its close proximity to Wigan Casino (yawn) and all the big clubs in Manchester you'd have thought it would have spawned loads of venues of its own. 
Alright there's The Sink nowadays and I'm led to believe it’s been going from the sixties in one way or another. Baz Maleady and his gang ran the much respected Saints Club in St Helens throughout the 90s. But of all the books and magazines I've ever read the city gets few if any mentions.
Maybe I'm reading the wrong books, maybe I'm talking shite (and thats why my breath smells) but I'd like to read other peoples thoughts on this matter. 
Maybe somebody from that area will post up and say I'm talking rubbish and give evidence to shoot down my ideas?

In all my years I've never actually been to a soul cub in Liverpool the nearest has been the afore mentioned Saints and the Viaduct in Newton Le Willows.

Haha - yeah same thing - me and Bad Ass (Alex Yearwood) used to do a lot of 'em in the 90's in Manc and Liverpool - used to be a bit on top in Manc when Cheetham Hill and Moss Side weren't getting on though.

Al's council 'house' (he actually lived in a rented property) in Cheetham Hill had been turned into a Blues specific venue.

 

The whole house was wallpapered with posters, the front room had tweeters screwed into either side of the fire breast and the bass bin was actually in the fireplace, the kitchen had a counter blocking it off from the dining area for serving  ale over and the decks had been screwed into where the sink should have been.

 

It all came to a head during the inter-city troubles when someones motor got blown up outside.

Kev Edwards, Bad Ass, Ray Rose and myself did Ragga's on Hardman Street Liverpool for a couple of years in the early 90's.

 

Owned and destroyed by Black Joe the Yardie, it was hugely popular for a spell, coaches from all over came - had the LFC team members in every week.

 

As a matter of fact we had John Barnes, Jamie Redknapp and a few other players at ours buying soul music weekly (Barnesy had a penchant for £50 dodgy imported kung-fu VHS too ).

There definitely was a one off Northern night at Liverpool Tiffany's (under the Liver building) in 79/80(?) with "casino classic" giveaways!  About 50 in attendance on a tuesday night.  I worked for Mecca then and organised it. I think Nic Cowan dj'd at it (think he did a northern radio show across the mersey in Birkinhead?)

 

I also went to a few funk niters at the timepiece.

denbo there was a big funk club post timepiece in the 70s cant think of the name, on wood street from the bottom on the right walking up you had sadies, swinging apple and it was after that it made the corner, cant remember all the d.js but ivan freeman was one....

There were Funk clubs in all major cities during those times, doesn't make Liverpool any more a "funk influenced" city than any others, it was generally a sign of the times.

I presume Billy Butler (the radio Merseyside/Radio City jock) must have played a bit of Soul in the 60's. I seem to vaguely remember he had the first copy of Frankie & Johnny which Richard Searling nabbed.

 

Also, where were the Beatles hearing the Isley Brothers, Marvelettes, Smokey etc? I presume they must have been hearing that stuff somewhere in Liverpool in the early to mid 60's.....?

A bit!!! He was bringing over live American Soul acts at the same time as the Twisted Wheel and others. Great Soul club. Another old pal of mine, mostly when he was selling me records.

On a serious historical note, it's a large port too, I've have read that some sailors were bringing in some early U.S. soul/r&b records in to the country, along with some of those Beach Boy style button down shirts & mohair/mod style suits early 60's, before it went mainstream.

Plus, many of the ships docking in Liverpool used thousands upon thousands of old American & Jamaican imports as ballast. I've since found out that certain clued up collectors used to buy up box loads off the ships crew for buttons. Wish I'd known. Mind you, I wouldn't have had the money in those days.

Seem to remember one next door to Liverpool Lime Street but never went. Not sure how long it lasted, or whether it was just a one-off. Anybody else remember that one? I THINK Ian Levine was involved in some way???

 

Nick Cowin, yet another old pal of mine. Used to knock around with me and Frank Jackson. In fact we did the odd Radio show with Terry Lenaine. Nick was a lecturer at the Liverpool Blue Coat School up the road from Picton Clock in Wavertree. After a few slurps of Draught Bass and the odd Pub Quiz at the Coffee House pub, we'd pop back to the school and raid the kitchen for our supper. He's retired now. Haven't seen him for years. He was a great ambassador of Soul music and turned a few of his pupils onto the music over the years. Nice bloke.

Barry, I’ve NEVER said that Liverpool was a “soul hotbed”, just that it wasn’t devoid of Soul, as was being suggested. same as me denbo , i now live in widnes , still go all the local places , runcorn warmy , st helens zydac, widnes services , penketh eagle , the only one i can think of who still lives in liverpool and still goes all the local places is alfie from birkenhead , i even asked him the same question when i spoke to him last year in warrington tetleys, he said he was the only one he knew that travelled to wigan weekly from over there , as for northern soul nights in liverpool on a regular basis it just didnt take off , when i started going to wigan in 75 , i still went down to liverpool to see me old mates , they had never heard of northern soul.

there was another niter , on hardman street called the mask club  (i think) that did a one off , it was well attended though.

me & linda were in a pub round the corner from lime street last sat waiting for train to 100 club i had sales box with me & two over 60's came up to me , one who used to go wigan & one who used to go the wheel, then the icing on the cake  i went  round to the gents past another room where there was a laptop dj playing the snake

As Denbo said much earlier in this thread,the subject has been covered severally before.Billy Butler was playing soul at The Cavern during the packed  60's lunchtime sessions,and indeed used to get a plentiful supply of American imports via the docks.These included possibly the first copy on these shores of Richard Temple's classic,although I think it's fair to say that Billy was always a soul fan as opposed to purely Northern.His dj sessions at the Mardi were the highlight of my week for quite a while,and although I'd been buying soul since the early 60's,there was always stuff in those spots that I had to go and ask about......then I started djing myself in Liverpool in the early 70's,with weekly train trips to Record Corner in Balham for the latest American imports.The implication that Liverpool was/is devoid of soul ether then  or now is patently untrue,although for whatever reason there was never really a venue that would attract visitors from outside the Merseyside area.

Nicely put.

It was only when Pat Costigan & Stan Evans instigated the re-opening of the Sink did a Soul venue in Liverpool attract visitors from outside of Merseyside. But during those short few years that it remained open, it attracted visitors from all over the country. And not to come and listen to 'Northern Soul', but proper, early Soul and R&B.

You were the ONLY Northern Souler from Liverpool in the early 70's! I had mates who used to go to Les Spaine's club, the Timepiece which was mainly upfront funk and quite a few went to Terry Lennaine's do's in Birkenhead which was commercial soul and disco but Northern soulers from Liverpool you could count on one hand. One finger in fact!

Joey Hatton, Yorkie R.I.P. from Latchford, Geoff Whitfield (he was a serious record collector, top lad too), Kenny Wakefield and Avo, Gaz Johns (who still comes out with us) from Orford. Loads and loads really, these just spring to mind now.

I believe it Ste, he was a top guy, he was friendly with all the Warrington lads.

I remember and know/knew Janet well, shared many a Sunday morning on the train back to Bank Quay.

Don't laugh, but if it was him, I bought a Don Varner (pressing) on Quinvy, thinking it was original! 

It was tucked away right at the back of the box full of really rare originals, but it was the only pressing in there, (I thought he didn't know what he had, so offered a silly amount of for a pressing) he took it with a smile!!

My face was tearstained that night I can tell you, I was young and foolish, that's my excuse, live and learn.

There were nights being promoted as "the Sink" in Liverpool up to a couple of years ago, Sunday nights I think, and one of the Sink DJ's did a spot at the revived wheel in Whitworth Street.

 

Couple of my mates went a few times and said it was pucka and well attended.

Ok given that there was some kind of soul scene in Liverpool, can I ask the local lads why they think Northern Soul never took off in Liverpool? It's always puzzled me given Northern kicked off big time all around the outskirts of the city...

 well if i remember correctly, most of the lads i knew only knew the chart hits , or what they heard in the local discos , also i big no no then was to be seen on the dance floor dancing on your own , you only danced with a girl full stop , round about the same time i went to a disco round sefton way , the dj piped up any want a lp , so one of the lads shouted i will , when the dj gave him it , he said to him you can have it its total sh*te , it was a brand new copy of jumping at the gogo lp that had just come out , i ended up buying it off him for 50p , atb Eddy
