Lets say a new top class venue in the North West started, a quarterly allnighter/soul nite. The policy was strictly upfront soul - Northern, Crossover and Modern.

Who would be in the line up and what would their playlists be (top tens)?

Could Northern and Modern work in the same room??

Also, would it prove popular, and how would the younger punters be pulled in?

Would it work, and what would the key success factors be???

There already are nights that cater for this , the Orwell in Wigan which is my favourite do and also the Greatstones in Manchester these venues are quite small but play by far the best cross section of music .

Not quite North West but just a little bit down the road at Sheridans someone is already running an upfront all-nighter with one of the best line up of resident DJ's. Lifeline run by Andy Dyson and Mick H with Soul Sam, Tim Brown, Cliff Steele, Nick Stevenson and only the best guests who can cut the mustard :-)

It's on tomorrow night, if your doing some research wink.gif pop along and have a listen at the best upfront nighter

Forgot to mention, none of the Djs are told what to play except not to play the same old same you hear here there and everywhere. With folk like Sam, Cliff and Butch with broad tastes there's a bit of everything thrown in, seems to work a treat.

so long as they stay away from the third sat of the month then i would attend wink.gif

the lifeline has probably the top line up for an upfront night and the greatstone has very enthusiastic collectors as their line up

All the best Nighters have an open policy & no restrictions on what DJ's play.

Cast your minds back & you'll see that most of the legendary venues played a bit of everything, with the main crux being new discoveries.

This type of venue will get my vote every time, as this is what the 'true rare soul scene' is all about.
