Hi,

Setting up a music room for my ever growing soul collection and wondered what preferred method is best, a shelf, keep them stacked in metal boxes, 7"cubes stacked, or an expedit from Ikea, but that's more for 12"?

What do you all do?

Thanks

Paul

The Ikea bookcases are a great way to store and easy access.   At the moment the records I rotate are in record cases, the rest in boxes.   I'd recommend you store them correct

it highly depends on what amount of 45s you intend to own. how many do you have now and what is the maximum expected size of your collection?

expedit is definitely only useful for LPs. If you're going with Ikea, I use Billy bookshelves, they look good, you can set extra levels so that there is little wasted space, and I recently found that you can hack together two height extenders to add three more levels at the top (assuming your ceiling is high enough).

Oh I didn't see them on the site, they look much better for 7" records. I have around 1000 northern records at the moment and don't see myself stopping. I have a few hundred 12" records but I'm not fussed about them staying in metal cases.

Thank you for your help and advice, think I have found what I am looking for :)

the billy shelves look good with 45s, I will try to take a pic of a shelf and post it so you can see what it looks like full

yes, do. i would love to see some of your collection so i can salivate!

Huh, 1000 45s, that was about 20,000 45s ago for me. Everytime I see a post about record storage like this it makes me wonder what the hell I'm doing. The core of my collection (more like 9,000 45s) is well stored.

my new thing is obsessively getting rid of tattered sleeves or those old green fadey cardboard things. I can't believe I had like 4 figure records in sleeves where the paper isn't connected and they're sliding out. I've been buying heavyweight gold sleeves for more expensive records and heavy white sleeves (which actually cost more) to replace tattered sleeves. I hate outer card sleeves or outer plastic.

I'm a young collector, been actively collecting for around 2 years. So at the start of my journey really, but want to get organised now as I already have way too many metal boxes and want to tidy things up.

Some great advice.

Thank you all

The ones I want out are all on bookshelves, the rest in boxes.

I'd recommend you store them correctly from the start and also catalogue them as you go along. When you get behind, you tend to stay behind.......... (I'm way behind... )

I have open record boxes in cupboards with closing doors.

They don't get dusty and they are out of the way, safe from accidents.

You can take out a box at a time over to your record player.

In Holland, my 45s are stacked on old-fashioned hardwood bookshelves with uniform shelf height of about 15% higher than a 45 (lucky coincidence that my uncle's shelves were perfect for 45s).  My LPs are stored in wood cabinets.  In USA, my Detroit and Chicago 45s are stored in bookcases in my record room, the remainder (bulk) of my collection is stored in custom-made (movable) shelving, along the walls in walk-in wall-length closets.  My LPs are stored in several large credenza cabinets.

Yes Rod, this old cheapskate penny pincher actually paid a carpenter to build shelves!  Unbelievable, eh?
