45cellar Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 J J BARNES PLEASE LET ME IN RIC TIC WDJ Pretty hard to find ...well for me it is ...?? You're right, I have only ever had the one realistic chance of owning this in 44 years of collecting. 2
Premium Stuff Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 You're right, I have only ever had the one realistic chance of owning this in 44 years of collecting. One kind of snuck through eBay about two weeks ago. Was listed as the other side. Went for about £150. Not great nick. That's at least two on eBay in the last six or eight months. Cheers Richard 1
Kegsy Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Johnnie Taylor Changes Pretty tough on a Demo IMHO. Kegsy
Ernie Andrews Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 What about Gene Chandler constellation white demos - Cheap as chips on issues but white demos? Also The Esquires on Bunky- again real cheapies on issues but not easy on white demos
Rick Cooper Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Couldn't agree more. Finding demos on bona-fide hits is difficult. I've got some hellishly tough promos many of which have never made it to either Discogs or E-Bay yet..... Ian D Ian What condition are they in? I never found any mint demos of big hits. The ones I've seen were all in a really bad state. I went to a couple of US radio stations in the 70s and the DJs would throw the unsleeved singles around without a care. Any chance of scans of some of yours Rick
Rick Cooper Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Roger The Cliff Nobles " Horse" demo looks as though it's one sided, so was there a demo of "Love is All Right" before this as I thought the Horse was the B side originally. The story was that radio DJs flipped "Love is All Right" for "The Horse" which would be tricky for a J/G single sided demo Rick

It would suggest that It was the "A Side". However; Totally different Label, but this one also has a Single Sided "B Side" DEMO BESTWAY PRESS : Different Side Promoted on this Single Sided DEMO 1
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Got this through the other day too. Great cheap record (£6) and nice on a demo. 2

Guest Gogs Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Don't know anything about this one from my box, (except that in JM's latest guide issue listed as £50 and demo at £200) (pages 559 and 91)
45cellar Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 To help us get Al Wilson out of our heads, I'm sure we can all think of loads of fantastic white demos on the Motown labels and Atlantic. Even these two: Miracles - Tears Of A Clown, and Soul Brothers Six - I'll Be Loving You are very decent collectors' pieces. SPECIALITY PRESS : MONARCH PRESS : www.PopSike.com 1
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) Don't know if these qualify? Nothing rare, just nice to look at (my opinion) Click on image to enlarge. Edited May 10, 2013 by Northern Soul UK
Dave Moore Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 Here's a few from the shelves of my record room. Nothing uber rare but you'll have to have a good look round when searching for some of them. I'd say the hardest to find was The Capitols Karen 45. Had owned the stocker for 15 years until I eventually located a WDJ. Some of the Motown Styrene WDJs are particularly hard in pristine nick in my experience too. 3
Premium Stuff Posted May 10, 2013 Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) Hi Dave That Ad-Libs on Karen is debatable as being harder and more expensive than the issue I reckon. Some folk reckon the issue is harder - and I think price-wise they are possibly in a similar ball-park By comparison - that Capitols on Karen must be well hard Cheers Richard Edited May 10, 2013 by Premium Stuff

Some folk reckon the issue is harder - and I think price-wise they are possibly in a similar ball-park By comparison - that Capitols on Karen must be well hard Cheers Richard Hi Richard, Yep as far as price in pounds is concerned I'd certainly agree Mate. But the Ad Libs is a Mint- and I'd think they are not as common in that nick as a stocker issue. Plus, sometimes it's not about the cost of a 45 but the value to you as an individual collector. A good example is Dickie and The Ebbtides on GW. Terrible record but hard to find so the cost of it is high but the actual value to me is nil. Yet I've seen many more Dickie and The Ebbtides than, say a Rose Batiste Holding Hands Demo or a Sunliners - All Alone Demo in perfect nick. Yell you what....it's a funnee ole game this collecting lark eh? Regards, Dave PS -I'll try and sort a few more out to contribute next week. Good thread.
MotownDave Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 I see the British stuff creeping in so how about Edwin Starr Stop her on sight / I Have faith in you , on polydor demo that must be right up there. the demo is near impossible yet the issue is everywhere 2

dthedrug Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 HI ALL, Not sure if I have put these up before, however 2 great UK DEMOS that most of you would keep in your collection, not big money, but rare, here is a big money record cost me £60 DAVE K THERES A HUGE PRICE DIFFERANCE IN STOCK & DEMO.
Ian Dewhirst Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Ian What condition are they in? I never found any mint demos of big hits. The ones I've seen were all in a really bad state. I went to a couple of US radio stations in the 70s and the DJs would throw the unsleeved singles around without a care. Any chance of scans of some of yours Rick Most of the ones I have I don't think ever reached radio stations since they're all pretty much mint. Could be ex promo stock that got dumped by the promo people. Most of 'em were bought for 10-25 cents each simply 'cos I can't resist a Soul hit on a beautiful white promo. Some are exceptionally rare. I just sold a "Why I Came To California" - Leon Ware mint Elektra promo for £60.00. I think that's every bit as rare as many Northern things..... Don't have to time to scan 'em unfortunately. You may find a few on here though (once you've got past the UK stuff):- https://www.discogs.com/seller/Mastercuts?format=Vinyl&condition=Mint+%28M%29&format_desc=7%22&format_desc=Promo&page=8 Ian D
Northern Soul Uk Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 A few more of my little babies. I do so love USA Motown related demos. 2
Chris L Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 (edited) Tony Clarke - Landslide - Chess Eddie Parker - Love you baby - Ashford Both rather cheap on issue and very rare on demo aren't they? Can't remember when I last saw some for sale............ Edited May 14, 2013 by Chris L 2
Ernie Andrews Posted May 14, 2013 Author Posted May 14, 2013 How about this....100_8471.JPG Yeah - Thats the sort of thing I was thinking about- very nice
Guest Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Only ever had one demo copy of this forgotten thumper,,,which still sounds fabulous...what a sax break! 1
Ian Parker Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 'Sock it to em JB' - LIKE WDJ ? not seen many of those I don't think ?

45cellar Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 'Sock it to em JB' - LIKE WDJ ? not seen many of those I don't think ? I would say that It Isn't that easy to find on DEMO, Plus different pressing plants Involved. I have seen a few different Label Variations for this on Stock Copy so are there other DEMO Variations ? MONARCH PRESS : For Instance, I believe that there should be a DEMO for the West Coast Monarch. I haven't seen one but see no reason why It shouldn't be there. Could be a White DEMO, may be a coloured DEMO same as Stock Copy but with PLUG SIDE, PROMOTIONAL etc on Label.
Gene-r Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 But if you are old school "it keeps raining it's the spot"...VALUE TODAY FOR THE 2 £500 ANY DAY, 001.jpgDAVE K I would agree Dave - about £470 for John Andrews easily, but only about £30 for the Fats demo.
Gene-r Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I see the British stuff creeping in so how about Edwin Starr Stop her on sight / I Have faith in you , on polydor demo that must be right up there. the demo is near impossible yet the issue is everywhere Yep - incredibly rare, and I'd say it's gotta be worth £500 of anyone's money.
Britmusicsoulfan Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Oh, and how can we forget: Al Wilson - The Snake - Soul City ... seriously, please, how can we forget ... any suggestions most gratefully received?!! I just got the promo 2 weeks ago!
Guest Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Oh, and how can we forget: Al Wilson - The Snake - Soul City ... seriously, please, how can we forget ... any suggestions most gratefully received?!! As a 'reminder'

45cellar Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 here ya go 'Love Is All Right' on a demo first one I've ever seen First one that I have seen too. Many Thanks for the Scan proving that both sides have obviously been promoted. Meanwhile I have picked up another copy of "The Horse", Single Sided but with D J Copy
Guest Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I've had 2 of these, still got 1post-9555-0-62011600-1369065201_thumb.jpg Out of interest were your copies exactly the same as the one I posted up...same print layout, same size font and the "Not For Sale" wording positioned top right? Just curious as to whether the demos came from the same pressing plant. A rare demo IMO.
