Guest Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Hi All, I've got a copy of the above on Motown 1078 and I always thought that the flip was Tomorrow May Never Come. However just flipped my 45 and it's 'Always Love You' on both sides...even the label is for Always Love You. Is this a common mispress or is it a demo (doesn't say anything on it about being a demo)? Cheers Adam.

Guest Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I've studied both labels and they are identical? Nothing on them anout demo or DJ copy....and unless it's a reissue or demo I can't believe they intended to release a 45 with the same song on both sides?

Hi Adam,I have exactly the same record as described in your opening post........unusual for Berry to not spot something with the release "press" of a tune I wonder how many "slipped the net" ATB stevie Oh got mine out of Val Shiveley's
Guest Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Hi Steve, You're right about Berry, he very rarely missed a trick. Maybe ours are the only two copies and are therefore massively rare and valuable

Maybe ours are the only two copies and are therefore massively rare and valuable Hi Adam There are others that have been issued in this way, as double A Side but with a standard label. I would consider them to be difficult to obtain although I'm not sure why they were issued like this. I've got; The Elgins - Heaven Must Have Sent You - VIP 25037 Jr Walker - I'm A Road Runner - Soul S-35015 The Temptations - Get Ready - Gordy G-7049 The Contours - It's So Hard Being A Loser - Gordy G-7059 Isley Brothers - Got To Have You Back - Tamla T-54146 The Momitors - Since I Lost You Girl - VIP 25039 Don't think they're easy, as In my experience they don't appear often. All have correct Matrix Stamps in Deadwax. Have seen, but missed, (Outbid) Isley Brothers - Take Some Time Out For Love - Tamla The Velvelettes - These Things Will Keep Me Loving Me Loving You - Soul Frances Nero - Keep On Lovin' Me - Soul Edited May 22, 2006 by 45cellar
Guest Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Cheers for the info, seems there must have been a reason for doing some like this but I guess we'll never know. I was going to put this up on eBay before I noticed it was a double a side, but if you're collecting these and would be interested then PM me. Cheers Adam. Codfromderby Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 edwin starr i want my baby back demo ,with nothing on the other side?
Craig W Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I had a mint Gordy white label demo (Cant remember which one) which credited the artist as Erwin Starr on both sides. Sold it on Ebay a couple of years or so ago for £4.99.

Sold it on Ebay a couple of years or so ago for £4.99. i will never get my head around motown and what is rare and collectable and what is not, a northern classic on an original demo or a 45 on a rare mispress can be a fantastic item to own, not only to look at, but also to play the 45 in one of its original formats , and at nearly 40 years old you think should command a higher price than these items actually realise edwin starr demo on a major dealers list @ £15 semi chart hit by 21st creation on the same dealers list @£15 it beats me
Modernsoulsucks Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 I found a lot of these single sided 45s in a radio station in Columbus,Ga. I kept the Frances Nero and remember BH "Just look what..." amongst others that I sold. I can only assume they were for radio station use only to ensure plug side got played. ROD
Dave Moore Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 Berry Gordy's MOTOWN.............unfathomable if you try to work out each and every individual issue and why it was issued as it was. I've researched 100s of "mispresses', single sided Demos, Map/Block/Blue/White/Demo/Stock issues of same songs, with same Matrix #s. It really does become a quagmire! I gave up eventually! Example 1: There are 11 official pink Striped Motown issues yet there are at least 30 variants, that I know of. Example 2: Motown 1011 - Mary Wells...issued as: Pink Striped Stocker White Striped Demo Blue Map Stocker White Map Demo Blue Map Demo White Block Demo I think it boils down to the fact that Motown were a booming company back in the day, Berry wasn't averse to using another plant/printers if he owed money to a previous one, they also reacted when a song "took off" be producing more copies to hit the outlets asp. In the early days it wasn't unusual for Berry to change the take on the record, AFTER it's release, if he later thought it could sell better. Then of course there are the "mistakes" that invariably crop up in an operation as big as Motown became. It certainly makes the chase of collecting more interesting 40 yeras later on though eh?
