boxes and contents  are so desirable that its certain somebody in the crowd will be looking for a quick snatch and run.

it only takes a few seconds and theyre gone ..

People laugh at me sometimes, but my DJ box has a motorcycle chain on it, and it is chained to a non removeable object when ever I am out with.it.

I've seen ur box chained to John Weston one or twice lol

Just read this - sod off kegsy!

I have to confess - I read it, and took it literally, thinking ‘god that was lucky’, and presuming you must have had a nice Shiny Record Box that the Burglars were attracted to…..God, I’m thick at times!  - Unless I missed it because it was so ‘bad’

Nice one :D

All the best,

The only records i have had stolen playing out have been taken from my box by friends of other dj's. my friends don't hang about behind the decks [too busy enjoying themselves] rather than bigging up their egos and theiving. It would be lovely to think that all soul fans are honourable, delightful, witty,  weighed down with smoothness.....many are all those things but like all sections of society some people are very very unpleasent

Sadly, that about sums it up. Best to focus on the nice people, and the fact that most are honourable - I believe that anyway.

Not that I know the guy personally (but we’re all ‘feeling it’) has any news come of Craig’s Records as yet?

Someone broke into Swift Towers and looked through my collection and added a few decent tunes

on a serious note it must be heartbreaking to have you're records nicked , I've loaned the odd small box out years ago never to get them back, then went to a local do and the DJ (who knew fook all about Northern) , started playing a couple of decent records and when I went to have look he had Jimmy Breedlove - I can't help Loving You - Roulette Demo (I Know not rare! but I doubt if he owned any US 45's)  and it was mine , then I had a look through his box and there were about 20 records that I had lent out that he had bought off the geezer I lent them to and he had bought them all for 50p each !!!! This was 20 odd years ago , I even offered him £2 each for them even though they were mine (Had my Handwritting on the Covers) Bastard wouldn't sell 'em. :boxing:

Funny thing was I saw him a couple of years ago and threatened to fill his face in but the Mrs. stopped me , thank god  (too Old ! Me not the Mrs. !!)

they weren't rare but they were all Roulette / Rictic/ Okeh WD's Barstewerd

Cheers

He well deserved a good steel toe cap up his arse mate.how much more gentlemanly and decent could you have been when you even offered to buy them back,I can see the point in saying such as you have to give him the benefit of the doubt that he didnt know they were stolen when he "aquired them",However after discussing with him my doubt would not be giving him nearly so much benefit as by that time I would have realised he was a sh.t of the worst example, like you say some maybe not rare but priceless in terms of memories around them.I used to hang with some of who were classed as very bad boys back in part one of my time on the scene ,but you know what, none of them were ever into stealing records.

He's got a local do on soon , all via his laptop WTF ! but I'm going up and maybe wear my fooking Steel Toe Caps ! some things just don't go away !

The other thing (non soul related) he split with his mrs. about 20yrs ago and was a bit of a mess , so I invited him to my Mam & Dads for Xmas dinner

which he had , fell asleep then fooked off without even thanking them , wonker !

Saw Kenny Burrell chain his box to the stage speaker (Peterborough) and then stand at the side of the hall looking at his box all night never left his sight - but saying that he must have gone for a pi$$, unless he had one of those tubes down the pants

no promoters shouldnt do that. why should they? its the responsibility of the person who owns them to look after them.

would you leave £10,000 in cash in a bar that wasnt yours just on a seat? doubtful. think of it that way

some people leave their kids in places, David Cameron at the pub, The McCanns etc. there's an argument to say that if you can be bothered to look after your own property then you kind of deserve all you get, especially in this day and age.

i ran a night successfully for a few years in a bad part of London, coming out at 4am with crack heads hanging about, muggings etc. i had a protocol for the dj booth and for getting from club to cab. same for airports. got stuck in milan airport on the way back from russia for 8 hours with 200 records - alitalia went bankrupt whilst i was in the air - had 3 or 4 people trying to hustle me for them, distract me etc. was overtired, hungover, hungry but kept the tunes.

if people pride themselves on these tunes so as weve been told time and time again over the last day youve got to wonder how did someone steal them from them. was it force, beer or just lack of care.

exactly, Greg. and people may laugh but you can enjoy yourself knowing they are as safe as can be.

you also have to question taking a load of originals of cockerel waving tunes to a bar gig. the fella has come unstuck with that tactic.

had he taken a re issue of black exotics to this bar, for example he would still have his original to play at other venues, would he not?

yes, i have boxes for different places. dont you?

e

Not sure why you're trying to stick the boot in here Jamie you little twerp, but i've got a good idea. Im also a little puzzled as to why you feel the need to start commenting on something you dont know anything about but anyway, thanks for the sympathy and I hope you're as big a man as you're acting on this thread when we next cross paths. Somehow i doubt that will be the case but i'll look forward to it anyway.

Rule number one when I DJ is that my playbox never leaves my side.....some people have mocked the fact that I have a shoulder strap for 100 count box, but it means I can put it on the floor whilst moving around the club and keep a hold of it, or carry it around on my back never letting it out of my sight.

It can be a bit laborious, but it's taken me years to get my playbox together, not to mention the cash I put into it, so I have to have it with me at all times. As much as you want to trust your fellow clubbers, if I lose my tunes somehow, the only one I would want to blame is myself.

To be fair Greg ,if you were dj'n at a night with 4 other dj's and i was a chancer ...yours would be the last box I'd consider nicking !

Not cos its full of crap records ,but because I'd hate to think someone as big as you were to catch me in the process ..Gulp !

On two occasions I've had people I invited round (or who asked to come round) steal records from me while I've been there, either making a coffee or one chap said he'd left his bag behind, went back up to my room on his own, when I went up myself the record he'd asked about which I wouldn't sell him had gone.  And that's someone currently on the scene, been on the scene for years and years and who still speaks to me thinking I'm oblivious...

Not forgetting the seriousness of this topic of course, also I hope some good news is on the horizon for Craig.

Have to laugh as I see one of them constantly being praised on here.

when I do a spot/set, I always lock my case, and bring it away from the decks and me and my dad look after it, there is always something looking at my box because I am only 13 and don't want to waste/loose/stole from as I have paid quite a lot for my records... its up to the dj to look after it , but if your a promoter/organiser, you will always feel guilty if one of your djs records get stolen

Wasn't there a story about a DJ actually leaving his records on the roof of a car as it drove off or something?

Or did I dream that?

Dave Vanner has done that - Surely this hasn't happened twice?!!!

That maybe it Len, just know I heard the story somewhere.

Think I heard a story of someone ruining a Jades on Nite-Life, which was pretty valuable in the 70's, on a hot chippy counter I think.

Don't ask me where I heard it, may just be 'Northern' urban myth to be honest?

Also correct and not an urban myth. RS lent it so a photocopy of the label could be included on a fanzine. From memory I think it was Dave McCadden (RIP) who stopped off at the chippy. Places the Jades on the counter and walks away when he gets his order. Realised a short while later and dashed back. Too late it was already an ashtray.  But he got a replacement from Craig Moerer or paid RS the cost.

I had the same thing happen to me....we'd just finished doing a gig together, and he kipped on my couch. Over night, he'd had a rifle through the small stack I had in the living room, and left in the morning. He then listed the record he nicked up for sale on his website 2 weeks later....a well known chap who I thought was a gent. You live and learn :shhh: .

I would say 'unbelievable' but it's not.

I even had one guy who came round to do a one for one swap and he was on my left looking at records and I could see him pull a record out, move it to the side of the box and start to move it to his side to hide it under his jumper...I said "so that's the one you want is it" and he looks shocked and says "oh yeah, this one".

I was also told a story about two people, let's call them dealer 1 and dealer 2.

Dealer 2 went to see dealer 1 to buy a quantity of records, he was there for quite a while and kept nipping to the toilet.  Eventually when dealer 1 went to the toilet himself, he found several records stashed by dealer 2 'hidden' in the bathroom.

Dealer 1 told me this story himself.

I've followed this thread and its machinations with interest....and here's my 'expeirence' to share...X

Your property is YOUR responsibility. Any help to protect and do right is always a help....but ultimately...it is down to 'us'. This environment....the Soul Scene....whilst we would all like to think and hope we have a 'special' envirnonment.....and we have.....it is all encompassing and knows no prejudice! Each individual can dance as they like....or not. Collect what suits them....or not....and do whatever job in life they choose...or not! It also means it includes skally wags...craic heads...even some sexual deviants...and most definately thiefs!!! I live in the real world. This is a 'Community'....community sh*t happens. It did whilst I was 'living' among you each week. Be it an Eastenders episodes or informed educational one way chat from a Soulie chewing his head off....it wos all part of that Community...along with 'thrillers'!!!

I had records stolen......and indeed knew who. But as Pete S comments above....sometimes it's wiser to keep your counsell....X It's served me well!!!x

@@
~

Now...whilst I speak of the Soul Community's 'downside'.....the biggest 'negative' I had regarding theft was the night of making the Togetherness film at Kings Hall 10 years ago....the very one i've been promoting as FANTASTIC!!! Yep! Here's why!

I have a strecth Limo as a mobile office. A space was kept for me outside the front of the Hall as there is nowhere else to park....except in the loading bay just outside the doors! However...due to last minute changes...I went in me 'classic' BMW 730i I had at the time (I collect cars too!)....and am in it to start the film! Due to our filming outside and kit access etc....i parked it there for the night anyway. It was convenient for the nearly 3 hours we wos outside capturing all your chat!!! Eventually...we went in about 12 ish. At around 2am....someone came up to me and said me cars been broken into!! I went outside......and yes....me drivers window had been smashed and a 'tramp' was seen running away! They'd taken me phone out of its harness on the dash! I was realllllly pi**ed off! It's the 3rd time it had happened in me life!! What happening???....well...I have never locked a car...house....or anything....in 32 years of driving or having such responsibility!!

As a result I've had 1 broken into in '83...unlocked....smashed driver window...took stereo. Then...in Brighton circa 1995....had a drivers window smashed....car stolen....with me records in the back....car unlocked!!!! Then this occasion....Togetherness night! WHY SMASH THE FLIPPIN WINDOOOOOWWWWW....the car was 'open'???!!! So...does it prove it ain;t worth 'the stress' of 'have you locked the car love' and stuff'...??....for me....yes! In my experience....whatever i did...they wos gonna do it anyway!! I think the same can be said for thieves in the Scene....if they are that way inclined...it is gonna happen...whatever!x Just because it's the Soul scene...doesn't mean everyone is Soulful!! Look at yer last deal....be it records...drugs...or round to buy!!!! Possibly a Soulie init....was you really happy wiv it...and them???!!!hehe!x

...erm...me records??....a story in itself! But basically...the coppers colluded with me cos they couldn't do much....except gimme the details and address of the well known craic head tw*t! Me and Chris Eubanks and a few of his friends went steeeaming into the 'enclave' in his Yank lorry!!! I was there to help with his block of flats project...half way house for locals he wos funding and develoing...I was gonna do a gig for em at the time! A Community 'discussion' took place...and the car was recovered.....300 record box in back....opened....but not touched! the scallywag din't know wot they were!!! Just took all me clothes and stuff as I was heading for a hotel at the time! Me ties and socks trail lead to his house....dipstick!!!hehe!x

Ah....and the phone theft outside of Kings Hall 10 years ago??? I wrote about it at the time elsewhere.....told the story of Kings Hall/Northern Soul...film...theft...and wot we discovered! .Read by over 180,000 including 540+ Councillors from me 5 District councils...cos I emailed em it!!!!!! Here is the essence of what i told them all!

It was a few months into me becoming a research/investigation officer. I was pressing my Local Authority to pay up compensation for peedo victims in their care 20 years earlier! We had discovered many names of dignitaries ..ex mayors...Ex Mps...now Heads of Depts in Social Services...AND....several Police and Ex Inspectors ...and now Magistrates...who had 'buried'...and indeed some had taken part in this atrocity over 20 years. I was pressing them...blackmailing them to 'deal with the money'...or be 'outed'! In 2003/4....whilst making the film...I was stopped...17 times in 5 seperate Counties....and the coppers didn't know why they were doing it either!! My reaction....? I didn't answer the 'providers' etc which lead to court cases in 5 counties...non producers! I went to the first in Cambridge. Gave each Magistrate a letter prepared....naming and shaming EVERY ONE OF THEM and suggested it was the reason for my 'harassment'!!! That first occasion....only 1 out of the 3 magistrates returned! 2 of the others were 'compromised'...1 being married to one on the list!!!! Shaking..he said...we ain;t read it....and your free to go....!!!! The 2nd time a few weeks later i had an appearance in Norwich Magistrates! I went to them letters in hand......but I was seen in a Court room all alone....specially opened for me! 3 LUVLY Magistrates appeared...me...the Clerk....and they said....'we have reviewed this case of Non producing of documents...and decided there is no case to answer. We are sorry for your inconvenience...and...if there is any expense needs reimbursing then please let the usher know.'...he then finished with...'We wish you well with your endeavours..!" It seems the Magistrates have their 'Soul scene' too...with scallywags among them!!!

The rest of the cases 'dis-appeared' and about 3 months after making the Togetherness film...230 victims got £4 million between them...no quibble...after 6 years of my Solicitor mate 'trying' through 'normal' procedures and paper trails!! The 'Tramp'...was discussed shortly after with 'friend's' in high places Police wise. They told me it was an undercover job to get my phone for info....!!!  AN UNDRRERCOVER COPPER!!!....bet he'd never even heard of The Snake or owt!!hehe!x

These police are just given a 'job'. They do it without question. That phone ended up my end to folk who were abusing their powers. All sorted amicably in the end....but it don't change the fact that....it was a Copper....who stole my phone whilst at an All nighter!!!!!! I was handcuffed to a young un in 1979 as we were being transported to Wormood Scrubs! Me heading to Borstal for fighting...him for knicking outta lost property! I was 17....and never forgot who the next thief could be!!!x They are everywhere....but not as prolific in this community as out there....i'm sure!!x Sleep safe!!x

Let's have a song to celebrate....which has some police interest!! The siren at the beginning....is my producer mates wifes police car....she switched it on for him to record....like the 1812 Overture with 'real canons'!!!hehe Here's The Zoots-Bumblebeez and Rudeboyz.....wiv REAL police siren......!x

https://www.skooters.cc/zoots/bumblebeesnrudeboys.mp3

...and when i say that night was 'time out'...it wos. My pi** off is that someone tried to bring my work to my chill out zone.....that pi**ed me off. Which is why I sorted it! End of. Keeping the Soul scene 'soulful'....X Most of the DJ interviews took place after this event.....it got me mind off more important matters...and it shows!....so thanx to the Police...abd theiving....YOU all got a SUPER happy film!!!x Coming soon.......!!hehe!x

I left a small bag with some LPs in it on my last trip to the US on top of my friend's car in a mad late dash to catch my flight. The only real rarity in there was the Ripple Blast Singers "Funny Girl Ala Soul" LP, which would have been a tremendous loss. Got into the checkout and realized I didn't have the bag with me, and immediately rang her... Turns out she was ringing me at the same time, to say that she'd gotten onto the FREEWAY when someone waved her down to say she had something on the roof. LPs all in tact, weighted down by my 45 centers resting in the same bag!   I still haven't gotten them back from her, but glad to know they're safe in her apartment in San Francisco rather than smashed all over the interstate.
