Most probably info on James in an Ace 'Dave Hamilton related' CD booklet notes ......... not at home at present so can't check ...

... but I'm sure Ady or someone like Chalky will see this thread & give a proper reply.

Will be @ the Cleggy Weekender soon & Glen not being there (as he always was) will remind us how much we still miss the guy.

James Lately (no longer with us) released one record with Dave Hamilton on Temple records as mentioned.Ive only ever seen his name on one other record details elude me but the disc belongs to Andy Dyson so he might be able to help. When i was over at D Hamiltons house James sisters came by on roller skates ( straight opposite Mr Franklins Church ) Arethas father Managed to get 3 copies of the disc and Dave told me that James was a real tough guy(bit like Larry Clinton was ) he went to the same school as Berry Gordy Jnr and one day gave Berry a slap dont forget that Berry was a succesful boxer around that time more so later,so as i said James was no pushover.Alas he was killed in the early 70ts dont remember the exact year i think it was knife wounds. The song (both sides ) is a fitting tribute to Glens memory.

Hi Gilly

The London Taxi Man - have heard of this guy, but never really knew if it was a myth or not

Is/was this the guy that only collected Detroit ?

Yes Jim hes for real and has the worlds largest Detroit collection,im one of few people who was allowed if not the only person to visit his house in London many years ago

Interesting Gilly

Is it only Detroit he collects?

Is it only soul?

Does he attend nighters etc.?

I'm intrigued my friend

Happy birthday mate

Jim

Anything out of Detroit, I would have guessed he was a soul fan originally but is not on the soul scene as such. Nice chap and helps out when he can

There's a great photo of James in the first Dave Hamilton CD and we used an alternate take of his 45 on that. The notes say that according to Dave & Joe Hunter he was shot by his girlfriend over something trivial. We have his original contract and signature in the vaults here, it's nice to see.

I think the rumor that james sang with the domestic five is false, according to someone i know who talked with someone else involved with aquarius

Unable to furnish any hard facts regarding Mister Lately all I can add is a neat little anecdote:

Many years ago I'd only just heard the Temple release for the first time via the usual tape swop.

I remember I was stood about somewhere talking about records, Chris Shepherd was also there along with a few other lads.

The Temple 45 came up in conversation and one of the lads started to tell a story about how Chris got his copy.

With Chris looking suitably embarrassed it turns out many years before a mate of his had given him the record for free saying summat like "You like that sorta slow stuff don't ya? Have this - it's too slow for me".

We gasped with admiration.

I'd be astounded if it wasn't Lately singing on both the Aquarius 45's and is also using the name Calvin Golden - of course i can't back it up with any proof other than the voice says it all.

Derek from memory Chris Shepards copy came  from a soul bowl soul pack a long time ago,cos when he sold his records to Browny i was there and ended up buying that same copy which is a very clean one and still have it to this day, that's when Chris told us the story,he had a fabulous collection and a nice chap too.

Hi Andy

I have my doubt's about James Lately and Calvin Golden being one and the same based on the fact that one of the  the earlier copies that went through e-bay had a hand written press release( letter of provenance) from the producer Henry Watkins Jr which pointed out that the record had a recording fault (i.e at one point the recording stops dead which be can clearly heard). The letter/press release stated that although they intended to repress the 45 with the fault corrected, they had seen fit not to do so as Calvin had recently been killed in a car crash. Did any one on soul source win it and can post it up ?

I never saw that copy with the letter but the record was pressed twice with two different label designs, i have both designs. it might have been the same plates, i have to check. i don't think there's a pressing fault on either, the record is just so ghetto that there are two really bad tape edits in the song.
