Popular Post georgeblackwell Posted April 18, 2013 Popular Post Posted April 18, 2013 There has been a bit of discussion on another thread about the original version of PEACE OF MIND - MAGNIFICENT MEN written by lead singer Dave Bupp. I thought others would find this very interesting (if it has not been put up before) not sure if the film was ever made/released but this trailer is brilliant. 11
Guest Dave Turner Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Super clip, they really were MAGNIFICENT
Roburt Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 A great piece about a fine group who did well on the US chitlin circuit ..........
Back Street Blue Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Top stuff....gives a real insight into how the music know's no racial boundaries and challenges the views of some people that white artists per se cannot be truly accepted as soul artists. To be accepted by the black artists and their audiences as being true soul artists at the height of the 1960's racial tensions in the States really is some accolade.
Rich B Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Now that, I enjoyed! Absolutely superb...now where did I put that album?
Chalky Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Brilliant Chris, enjoyed that, thanks for posting.
Bossfourpart1 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Excellent Post ,can't help but be moved by it.many thanks Frank

Wiganer1 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 keep on climbing ,, all your lovins gone to my head = two northern soul belters mag men along with outsiders - 2 brill blue eyed soul groups.. 2
Windlesoul Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 (edited) Absolutely corking group. A beach music pal from Winston-Salem NC told me he was off this week to see "Class of 60 Somethin' ", a current group made up of guys from the original Magnificent Men, the Del Chords and Custer's Last Band, still doing the rounds around York (Pennsylvannia) and elsewhere. Edited April 19, 2013 by Windlesoul
Northern Soul Uk Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 (edited) A great band indeed, and so underplayed too. I was really chuffed what I got this about a year ago for literally pennies. Both sides are stunning and not seen another one since.. Other side is the brilliant 'Together forever' Edited April 20, 2013 by Northern Soul UK
Sebastian Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Did the full documentary ever get a release? The homepage is gone. Would love to see the full thing!
Gilly Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Thanks to Georgeblackwell and Gareth for putting those two clips up,super.I used to have both LPs on them(one of them being very hard to get) it goes to show you dont have to be black to sing(but it does help) for me one of the best all white groups not forgetting The Embers.Brill.....
Guest Droylsdonian Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 It's always amused me that anyone would cover up The Magnificent Men as, errrrrr, The Magnificents.
Windlesoul Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 Bit like the Generation as the Soul Generation
Robbk Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 bit of info on the Marvin Smith penned track "nobody treats me the way you do" on the World of Soul lp.....which never got released by Marvin or the Artistics......Bob A asked Marvin about it and he never knew it got recorded.....and mebbe it got hawked around by Carl Davis thru Jalynne......im sure Bob could confirm......... I believe that David Bupp stated in an interview that The Magnificent Men got to do some work with Carl Davis. So, he may well, himself, have suggested that they sing that song.
Guest oldsoulgit Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Awesome clips, I've Got news is a belting Northern sound as well
Roburt Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 The Magnificent Men were 'making waves' by early 1966. "Peace of Mind" escaped on a Capitol 45 around March 66 and other Capitol 45's soon followed. As they were so good plus a 'blue-eyed soul' outfit they were getting loads of publicity and starring on the chiltlin circuit from 1966 right through 1968 and beyond. Their late December 1966 45 track "Stormy Weather" (the old standard song) got loads of radio plays & sold well enough for it to become a feature track on the group's 1st LP which was issued in February 67. ........... so the group had a 'very high profile' by Feb 67 ....... AND YET .... ..... at the end of January 67, Wilson Pickett was still making live appearances with his (then) backing band, the Magnificent Men. Wilson was also 'ever present' on the chitlin circuit, so he must have been aware of the other Magnificent Men. Wilson had renamed his backing band the Midnight Movers by July 68 when he had his big hit 45 "I'm A Midnight Mover" (anyone know if the Magnificent Men were just renamed the Midnight Movers or if was a different outfit altogether ?) ........ ..... but surely the situation (two sets of Magnificent Men) being advertised at the same venues for around 12 to 18 months must have caused a whole load of confusion back then.
Roburt Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 The Magnificent Men certainly had a high profile back in 1966 / 67 / 68 ......... .. they even went out on the 'Capitol Records Soul Caravan' package tour in summer 1966 ......
Roburt Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 A show the Magnificent Men headlined during the 'Capitol Records Soul Caravan' package tour in summer 1966 ...........
Popular Post Ady Croasdell Posted April 29, 2013 Popular Post Posted April 29, 2013 And Dave Bupp is a huge soul music fan still. We started off our relationship with a row for not including the Olympics Mine Exclusively on the first vol of Mirwood but ended up good email friends. The good news is we've just got final clearances for the second Darrow Fletcher CD too; the 60s sides. "Hey Ady, A few years back I sent you guys a challenge!!! To put together the complete works of Darrow Fletcher. I never believed for one minute that you guys would take on the challenge. But I knew if anybody could do it, you could!!! I’m waiting for the first DF release as we speak. Ordered it yesterday. I just want to say thank you to you guys for releasing DF’s work. WHEN CAN WE EXPECT THE 60’S DF RELEASE? What kills me is this: If it wasn’t for you guys in Europe & Asia, American soul music from the past would never see the light of day. You’ll never know how much some of us Americans appreciate the work ACE/KENT has been doing to keep American Soul alive. If we waited for the American record companies to release our music, we’d die of old age. My hat’s off to you guys!!!! And please, keep up the good work!!!! We Need You! Thanks Again Ady, Dave Bupp The Magnificent Men" 8
Robbk Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 That was live, rather than just lip-sinking. They did a great job.
Douglaschip Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 I have a fantastic copy of Babe, I'm crazy about you and Forever together on a nice purple German capitol with a picture sleeve bought for £2 quid about 10 years ago - on one side it has a sticker with 'Unverkaufliche Musterplatte' on it - translated this means 'unsaleable pattern plate' - strange! Love the 'together forever' side Adam
Pete S Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Useless information time, there's a really good UK cover version of "Peace Of Mind" by local (to me) band Zuider Zee which came out on CBS in 66. It's not as good as the MM version but it is well worth a listen. Quite an obscure one.
Guest bazooka joe Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Hi all, This is my first post here. I currently live just outside of York, PA and I DJ with my wife as The Thing With Two Heads. I stumbled upon this post and really dug the clip up top. Can any of you let me know what the song is that starts at 3:26, and if it's an album cut or a 45? Despite the Mag Men's local legend I've never picked up one of their records since I like my soul raw and crunchy for the most part. But THAT song sounded just right for one of my "loungey-er" gigs. Thanks!
Roburt Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 We could do with a 'new' decent Mag Men compilation CD .......... Collectables put a CD on the group out in the US about 20 years back ..... ..... BUT we need a decent one put together by a real soul fan. Where's Ian Dewhirst or Ady when you need them ????
Simsy Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Yet to be mentioned and imo, best track by the group - 'All your lovin's gone to my head'. Massive at the Fleet in 85. I bought my copy then from Dave Evison. Also available on UK.

Roburt Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Well Capitol certainly believed in them back in 1967 ......... a trade ad (full page) they put out ........
Graym Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Absolutely corking group. Check out Custer's Last Band on Youtube - a passable Dig You Act and Showdown amongst the selections available if you enjoy blue -eyed soul bands

That song is "Maybe, Maybe, Baby" which is the flip side to "I've Got News" on a Capitol 45. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I like this one from the "World Of Soul" album Magnificent Men - It's Got To Be Love - Capitol Album
Guest bazooka joe Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 excellent, thanks! i'll be sure to pick it up next time i see it.
