Ljblanken Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 (edited) have you ever worn a record out through DJ-ing it or listening at home? i know we all have bought records that were previously owned by non-collector types that have been "worn out" or simply trashed (not stored properly, not handled properly, etc), but have you ever had to replace a record because you simply spun it to much? in other words, have you, as a "serious" record person, bought a M- copy of something and noticed after awhile that it sounded/looked VG? couple sub-points: a) I know people are concerned about back-cueing records (so they don't get "cue burn"). what do you feel about that? b) you ever loaned a record out to friend and gotten it back in noticably worse condition? c) have you ever bought multiple copies just to hedge against wear? (not to get different label designs, issue/demo, UK/US/Canada pressings, etc) ...or are we all just being OCD, and since we all store and handle are records reasonably well - they should (barring fire, accident, etc) last our lifetimes? Popular Post Peter99 Posted April 11, 2013 Popular Post Posted April 11, 2013 have you ever worn a record out? I have never been able to get one in my style or fit. I'll go and get me coat now. Peter 6
Pete S Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I've got 3 copies of I Saw The Light by Todd Rundgren just in case anything happens to my main one. Like me sitting on it or something. This is the only record I've ever bought more than one of for this reason. You cannot wear a record out if you look after it, it will play forever.
Only Dreaming Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 In my earlier years I often lent records out to mates with dodgy record players only to have them come back knackered. It was a part of growing up I suppose. I once bought a used copy of a soul compilation lp featuring Wilson Pickett's version of "land of a thousand dances" and the first 20 seconds wouldn't play as the previous owner played the intro too many times. The rest of the track played fine. I often find a similar problem with my old collection of Kent compilations. The tracks that I really liked at the time play & sound pretty rough now through overplaying. Dave

Mick Holdsworth Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Once wore out a brand new Emidisc in the early 70's on its very first play. It was at this point I replaced my gramophone and its nail needle with on of those futuristic record players. 1
Mal C Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 won an LP on here a year or so ago... that Bill Spoon one...
Steve G Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Never worn a record out but as we discussed the other day I have got through 2 x copies of Otis Clay "Only way is up" in 30 years because it's such crappy styrene and starts distorting. A few other styrenes have been damaged a bit and are nearing the end of their life, so only played sparingly these days - Joe Matthews on Kool Kat is one like that! I've never worn out a vinyl pressing of anything and question whether you can actually wear out say a British press 45 if properly looked after as Pete says.
Guest Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 ha ha. i've never heard of todd rundgren - you actually tricked me into watching this vid on youtube! They played it in Wickes DIY store last weekend. Often played on radio 2. Good record though.
Ian Parker Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Darkest days, jackie lee . Eddie Holman, I surrender The kittens. Lookie lookie Seriously, all three totally shot, all three are ABC styrene.... Common link there

Roburt Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I have worn a few records out ..... but that was back in my transvestite period when I made a top out of 18 old 7" singles held together with wire. There was now decent 45's involved though, they were all Wigan stomper rubbish.

Guest Garry Huxley Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Was about to throw away some of my older british motown, when iwas introduced to = Isopropanol Alcohol mixed 50/50 with water, Distelled or de-ionized The best record cleaner ever and dirt cheap
Guest Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 (edited) Yes I wore out "Happiness Is Here" Tobi Lark on Topper when I had it in the 70's. I thought it would be easy to get another copy as it was great, but cheap to buy! I think I have left it too long to get one now! Edited April 12, 2013 by Guest
Ljblanken Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 That era spans three decades though! oohhh... sorry. i have heard of a handful of them. but i really have not listened to any concurrent chart music my whole life. i just choose very obscure sub-genres and go deep! i think i have OCD blinders on most of the time. ....i have heard of Meatloaf though! Saw him in "Fight Club"!

Saw him in "Fight Club"! Just to draw a line under this, I'm not a Todd Rundgren 'fan', I only really know I Saw The Light and the almost as brilliant Hello It's Me - I can still remember the first time I heard I Saw The Light, in 1972, and it's been with me ever since. I know a couple of people on here are big fans but I'm just a casual listener, I did try to get into the early albums but failed. I can't stand Meat Loaf though. Well he's ok, it's just his music I'm not keen on.

Tezza Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 I know of some DJs that have Original copies at home and play Pressings etc so the Original, which they keep at home, doesn't get scratched in case they want to sell the Original, which they keep at home. Aparently.

Tezza Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Some oft Mums old Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson stuff have seen better days. She used to have the old gramophone with the stacker and the Arm that came across dropping, supposedly, the next one, usually 2 or 3, down. And what the hell was that weird material they used on the fromt of the speakers in the 60's
Guest Garry Huxley Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 Where can you pick that up from then Gary ? Cheapest places i know is cleaning supplies shops Around £3/4 litre
