Jon Ford

Was a genuine release on UK Philips 1970.  He had 3 releases I think after being previously known as Eli Bonaparte (had a small hit on Decca) in 1969.  I've had email contact with him, he has no copies of his record, he lives about 3 miles away from me!  First played by John Vincent, september 1975.

Thanks guys.

Came and went. Obviously ' the other one ' was so huge it never really had a chance.

Difficult to get hold of ? Can't recall seeing one for sale anytime !!

I know it's not a monster but as you said, Mr V used to play it at Wigan and of course Samantha's !

sure there was one on here last year, cant recall who or when, but I mentally noted it as I've never seen it for sale before either.

Record collector price guide values it at =

Issiue : £100

Demo : £150

But its only a very inacurate guide, Not taking into account Demand etc

I've had 2 demos, last one was about 5 years ago, there is a topic elsewhere about this but I'd say there are probably only about 20 reported copies, one of which we know broke in the post!

If you're a buyer then the fact that Larry Santos is such an iconic track the Jon Ford version is frowned upon as being a poor cousin and so not an in demander. Remember when John V played it at Samantha's and got an EMI ( all I could afford at the time ) backed with World Column !!

Want a copy for personal gratification as it hold special memories of that time for me.

Tezza, have a listen to this podcast, well listen to it from about 17 minutes when JV's spot starts, he plays Jon Ford as his second record, this is the only recording I have of this being played at Wigan.  Also note the comment from my mate who recorded it at the end lol

I asked him (Jon Ford) if he had any copies of the record and he said that his management, Nita Anderson Agency based in Dudley, they got something like 5 copies from the record company and they gave him one copy, that's all he ever saw.

I would think his other two Philips singles sold better because I've often seen them at boot fairs, record fairs etc.

I was with the late Russ (rug) Bowers when he found this ,unknown to us at the time ,and played it that very night at Kettering central hall A/N .

I wonder if this was the same copy ? .- perhaps traded with Jon V.?

So does Nita (is she still alive?) have a whole bunch of records stored somewhere?   :g:

Doubt it, they were probably used as promos or giveaways, and I would have thought she was dead now - Astra Agency they were called, did all the local bands and also the early northern nights at the Civic and Wulfrun if I remember correctly - part owned the Lafayette?

Pete, Started collecting JF records many years ago in my small Pop music collection. I have Six releases of his on UK Philips, a mixture of Demos and Issues. I quite like his version of The Ice Cream Song.

Cheers

Interesting thread about a record I never knew existed. Not a bad version is it - but Larry Santos is a storming dance record which would be difficult for anyone to better.

The main reason it didn't cement itself on the Play Lists of many DJ's. Larry S's version is far superior and I think Mr V played it because it was not Larry S, bit of Kudos or oneupmanship. Happens now where people play a different version because its different for differents sake.

Still, it holds a place in my memory as I remember the first time he played it at Samantha's.

:hatsoff2: HI ALL....Did we not discuss JOHN FORD, Just a few months back??    As to value the DEMO falls into a)finding a copy that's gonna b passed on, b)demand is far greater than virtually all other UK ONLY RELEASES, c)it's a trade only 45 in my book, as cash does not always buy things you want.

:g: How rare is rare? well it took MICK SMITH a long time, that is my bench mark to work off, as he has top contacts, Pete's values are out of date and I am sure at auction he would get far more today, however someone out in SOULSOURCE WORLD could be lucky as not every one is aware of it's low known numbers, if I got rid of my demo,

I would want an issue plus cash or a trade, if pushed cash value £500+ DAVE K
