Randy Brown ‘Are You Lonely’ (3 Way / UK / 1988 / M-) £50

( Start off with a banger — I can honestly say that I never knew this had been pressed to 7”!?! Sure — I’ve had / seen the 12” a few times down the years and the LP — but — a 7”...? Wow Wow Wow...killer-driller version of the Hipnotic tune with Randy’s wonderful vox making this a real stunner — believe me, this is close to impossible to find... )

San Antonio’s Own HorIzon ‘They Don’t Make Em Like You’ (AAA / USA / 1982 / M-) £100

( Unplayed, multi-coloured label, first press copy of this ace Modern Soul / Boogie killer with some fantastic synth / MOOG parts and exquisite brass — my first copy in years and years... )

Bobby Patterson ‘I’m In Love With You’ (Action (black-green) / UK / 1972 / Ex+) £75

( Beautiful copy of a stunning Crossover tune — dinked middle but A-1 apart from that — few very, very minor scuffs...superb brass parts... )

King Curtis Combo ‘Jay Walk’ (Alcor / USA / 1960s / M-) £10

( New one on me? It’s deffo KC himself here cos his tenor sax style is unmistakeable but this must be VERY early a la 1961 / 1962...bordering on that ‘Popcorn’ sound so beloved by one and all thesedays...

The Variations ‘Sayin It, Doin It’ (Amour / USA / 1974 / M-) £15

( Lovely black / white demo copy of this quirky Disco-Funk groover which has been picking up lotsa fans lately — almost like an early Hip-Hop tune ith some heavy-sounding dudes giving it large over a lively backing with flute, nice perc and wah wah gee-tars...very good indeed... )

Jeff Perry ‘Love Don’t Come No Stronger...’ / ‘I’ve Got To See You Right Away’ (Arista / USA / 1975 / M-) £15

( Immaculate copy, 100% unplayed... )

Willie Tee ‘Walking Up A One Way Street’ (Atlantic (red) / UK / 1966 / Ex) £20

( Beautiful, red label Atlantic OG press for this evergreen NS midpacer... )

Alton Ellis ‘Tumbling Tears’ (Bamboo / UK / 1970 / VG) £40

( One of THE best Reggae-got-Soul 45s ever laid down — this IS “Jamaican Soul” — Alton was one of the finest vocalists ever to come outta JA — and — this is definitely one of his best tunes — kooky instrumental called ‘Joyland’ by Sound Dimensio on the flip which is certainly off-the-wall — a huge Coxsone Dodd-produced 45 — lotsa scuffs / minor crackle here and there and a sticker to topside but ***nothing*** like that will be able to stop your enjoyment of this 45.... )

Jackie Wilson ‘It Only Happens When I Look At You’ (Brunswick / UK / 1977 / M-) £75

( One of Jackie’s biggest NS tunes EVER — only pressed on 7” here in the UK — no USA equivalent exists...FACT! This is one of those weird / unusual instances that occasionally happens in NS where the issue is rarer than the demo...I’ve had 3 / 4 (red) demos down the years but this is definitely the first issue copy I’ve ever had...wow....what a tune, what a voice... )

Eddie McLoyd ‘Once You Fall In Love’ / ‘Baby Get Down’ (Brunswick / UK / 1975 / M-) £20

( Immaculate copy of this much-coveted mid-paced 70s NS dancer — hard on UK...and — I’ve never actually seen an issue before either — most copies are demos...very decent flip too — appears unplayed — just dusty after years in my storage... )

Count Basie and his Orchestra ‘Green Onions’ (Brunswick / USA / 1967 / M-) £15

( Nice/scarce black-blue demo copy here in the correct Brunswick custom sleeve — wonderful arrangement/s from Basie here — would make a great ‘ender’ at an NS do, eh? Very fair price here, kids... )

Curtis Mayfield ‘Move On Up’ +2 (Buddah / UK / 1971 / M-) £30

( Dinked middle but otherwise immaculate...just as rare on UK as it’s USA counterpart, believe me... )

Sins Of Satan ‘Dance And Free Your Mind pts 1 & 2’ (Buddah / USA / 1976 / M-) £20

( Stunning Disco-Funk-Boogie from this bizarrely-named combo — all of their stuff is well worth checking....tuff on 7”.. )

Cheryl Hunter ‘Do It Right’ (Budweiser / USA / 1985 / M-) £40

( Unplayed copy of this exceptionally good (and highly-rare) Modern Soul dancer on the elusive Budweiser label...UNPLAYED... )

Andy Williams ‘The House Of Bamboo’ (Cadence / USA / 1959 / VG+) £8

( Nice to have this on the OG USA press — simply a ‘kitsch’ classic... )

Clarence Mann ‘Show Me Girl’ (California Gold / USA / 1985 / M-) £40

( Unplayed WD copy of this highly sought-after Modern Soul dancer... )

( Unplayed demo copy of this unbeatable Modern Soul swayer...seen for £100 only this week...pi*s taker... )

( Big personal fave — immaculate two-parter...99% unplayed copy here... )

Leroy Hutson ‘Blackberry Jam’ / ‘I Think I’m Falling In Love’ (Curtom / USA / 1976 / M-) £20

( Rare 45 — my 2 favourite jams from LH’s unbeatable ‘Hutson II’ set — Blackberry Jam’ was just SO FAR ahead of it’s time I terms of arrangement / instrumentation and ‘I Think I’m Falling In Love With You’ is, well, just mesmeric — outstanding double-sider...unplayed copy here... )

Natural Four ‘You Bring Out The Best In Me’ / ‘You Can’t Keep Running Away’ (Curtom / USA / 1974 / M-) £8

( Another outstanding Windy City double-sider — Leroy Hutson-produced...say no more... )

Leroy Hutson ‘Can’t Stay Away’ , ‘Cool Out’ (Curtom / USA / 1975 / Ex+) £8

( Fantastic Soul cuts from a creative genius at his peak... )

Fruit ‘Say It’ / ‘If You Feel It Say Yeah’ (Cypress / USA / 1978 / M-) £50

( Massive Soulful Boogie double-sider which WILL rise in price as soon as the last few available copies dry up — just totally irresistible, both sides — I DEFY you to sit still when this drops....ya want ‘Cosmic Soul’...? Look no further....unplayed — would have been HUGE on the Modern Soul scene back in the day, trust me.......... )

Earl Grant ‘House Of Bamboo’ (Decca / USA / 1961 / Ex) £25

( Make Way For The Original — as later covered to great effect by Andy Williams...I prefer this version — so much tougher...watch the floor fill to this...few scuffs — minor stuff, believe me — huge on SO many scenes down the years...Jazz Dance / Rocking / Popcorn / Northern Soul etc — everybody loves this...my first-ever Decca USA copy ;-)

Laurel Aitken ‘Fire (In Your Wire)’ (Doctor Bird / UK / 1969 / VG) £40

( Many scuffs / surface marks BUT still plays loud and proud...one of Laurel’s ‘rudest’ tunes and one of his best / rarest 60s releases — flip ain’t bad either — fair price for a cool Doctor Bird seven... )

Harvey Scales ‘Single Girls’ / ‘Spend The Night Forever’ (Earthtone / USA / 1980s / M-) £50

( UNPLAYED copy of tis impeccable Modern Soul double-sider — ‘Single Girls’ was absolutely HUGE for Richard Searling at venues like Parkers back in the 80s / 90s — stunning dancer — flip is also awesome Deep Soul — rare as ya like, and then some...as Tricky Dicky used to say... )

Jonnie Baby ‘Special Things’ (Elektra / USA / 1986 / M-) £25

( Incredibly deep and soulful 2 Stepper / Midtempo dancer and another one that was absolutely HUGE in the North West for DJs like Richard Searling and Dean back in the late-80s / 90s — unplayed copy here in correct custom sleeve... )

Hudson People ‘Trip To Your Mind’ (Ensign / UK / 1979 / M-) £50

( Unplayed copy in correct custom sleeve — huge indemander... )

Rosie Gaines ‘Crazy’ (Epic / USA / 1987 / M-) £5

Larry Harlow ‘That Groovy Shingaling’ / ‘Mess Around’ (Fania (gold) / USA / 1960s / VG+) £40

Kay Robinson ‘This Old World’ / ‘Lord I’m Yours’ (Federal / USA / 1960s / M-) £120

Johnnie & Bill ‘On My Way To School’ (Federal / USA / 1960s / M-) £30

( Rare R&B / early-Soul belter from these two Sam & Dave soundalikes...immaculate copy in cool Federal custom sleeve... )

Al Brisco Clark & His Orch. ‘Soul Food pts 1 & 2’ (Fontana / USA / 960s / M-) £40

( Murder-rare JB-produced Mod / Organ-Funk grinder offered here on an immaculate WD copy in a gorgeous Fontana custom sleeve — very, VERY rarely pops up for sale, believe dat.... )

Momie-O ‘You’re Welcome, Stop On By’ / ‘Once You Get Started’ (I-Dentify / USA / 1975 / M-) £50

( Confession? I’m not a big Bobby Womack fan when he performs himself — his voice bugs me and I don’t really like ‘Southern’ sounding stuff too much neither BUT he certainly has written some great songs in his time and this is one of em...Momie-O IS Vicky Anderson — dunno who the male vocalist is here but he can sure hold a tune — produced by my man, Fred Wesley and JB was in the studio too — rarer than rare WD copy here too — oh boy.... )

Irma Thomas ‘It’s A Man’s Woman’s World pts 1 & 2’ (Imperial / USA / 1966 / M-) £5

( Nicely ‘altered’ version of the big JB tune of the same / similar title — unplayed copy in correct Imperial custom sleeve... )

Hands Of Time ‘I’ll Never Forget You’ / ‘This Love For Real’ (Inner City / USA / 1970s / M-) £40

( Immaculate copy of this much-indemand Crossover Soul double-sider — both Leroy Hutson tunes too — so — guessing this is outta the Windy City...? Wonderful stuff... )

The De Vons ‘Someone To Treat Me’ / ‘Never Find A  Love Like Mine’ (King / USA / 1960s / M-) £50

( Currently popular NS mid-pacer as produced by JB himself — flip is also quite delightful... )

( Unplayed copy of a big fave Sister Funk slammer — both sides.... )

Yvonne Fair & The James Brown Band ‘It Hurts To Be In Love’ / ‘You Can Make It If You Try’ (King / USA / 1962 / M-) £40

( Immaculate white-black King demo copy of this stunning double-sider — topside is raucous R&B and flip is a stunning slowie — very, very hard to come by in this kinda nice shape — slight WOL but looks like pencil so may well clean off just fine — this will be a job for the buyer — ok? )

Marva Whitney ‘This Girl’s In Love With You’ (King / USA / 1970 / M-) £25

( Immaculate promo copy with ‘T G I L W Y’ on both sides — unusual in itself — comes housed in a King custom sleeve )

( Stunning copy — unplayed — in correct custom sleeve.... )

Willie Clayton ‘Show And Tell’ (Kirstee / USA / 1980s / M-) £5

( Wonder whatever happened to Willie? Great voice — now retired, it seems...lovely version of the Al Wilson here — it’s all in the vocals, eh? Unplayed.... )

Patterson Twins ‘They're Playing Our Song On The Radio pts 1 & 2’ (Kon-Kord / USA / 1984 / M-) £40

( Wonderful Modern Soul dancer — my first-ever copy... )

Mellaa ‘Free’ / ‘Makin Love In The Fast Lane’ (Larc / USA / 1982 / M-) £50

( Immaculate copy of this excellent Modern Soul double-sider... )

The Soul Reps ‘Soul Food pts 1 & 2’ (Limelight / USA  / 1960s / M-) £15

( Unusual little Mod / Boogaloo dancer with a deeeeep bassline — great B3-led rhythm — in a Limelight custom sleeve...kinda plays on the ‘Green Onions’ lick but is still strong in it’s own right.... )

A Brother’s Guiding Light ‘Getting Together’ / ‘Sweet Stuff’ (Mercury / USA / 1973 / M-) £100

( 99% unplayed copy — rarer issue too — of this never-bettered Modern Soul / Funk double-sider — right up there with the best... )

Bobby Bennett and the Dynamics ‘Soul Jerk pts 1 & 2’ (Loma / USA / 1960s / Ex+) £75

( Hugely rare JB production — never, ever clapped eyes on this one before — seen at £200 elsewhere only this week...killer early-Soul / Popcorn joint with some amazing brass...issue copy here and some slight rubbing to A side label — minimal....rare one..... )

Andy Williams ‘House Of Bamboo’ (London (tri-centre) / UK / 1959 / Ex+) £10

( Incredibly clean for a 54 year old record, eh? Nice on a London OG tri centre too... )

The Pioneers ‘My Good Friend James’ (Mercury / UK / 1977 / M-) £150

( What a tune — I’ve been lucky enough to have had 3 copies of this pass thru my hands in the last 12 months and this one is easily the best of em — immaculate — sticker demo copy too — Eddy Grant at his almighty best in the studio here — some misinformed people have been trying to tell me lately that the Ice press is the original? IT ISN’T.....!!! Get that into your heads — Mercury came first...monumental Modern Soul dancer.... )

Razzy ‘I Hate Hate’ (MGM / UK / 1974 / Ex+) £15

( This is THE best mix / version — much tougher and more soulful that the USA Aquarian release — Modern Soul anthem...lovely copy here... )

Ray Rivera Orch. ‘Got My Mojo Working’ / ‘Salt Mines’ (MGM / USA / 1970s / Ex+) £20

Nina Simone ‘I Put A Spell On You’ (Philips / UK / 1965 / VG+) £12

( Unplayed copy — wonderful Modern Soul dancer / 2 Stepper...very, very hard on OG... )

The Joe Cuba Sextet ‘Psychedelic Baby + 3’ (RCA / Spain / 1960s / VG/VG+) £20

( Only my second-ever copy of this ace EP — am always on the look out for it too — plays @ 33 RPM too — 4 wonderful tracks on Joe ‘Bang, Bang’ , ‘Oye Como Va’ , ‘TCOB’ and — of course ‘ ‘Psychedelic Baby’ — minor wear to pic sleeve and a few scuffs to vinyl but apart from that, it’s all hunky-dory — listening to ‘TCOB’ as I type — reminds me a lot of Cal Tjader’s ‘Soul Sauce’ — builds beautifully...wonderful EP... )

The Brothers ‘Are You Ready For This’ (RCA / UK / 1975 / M-) £20

( One of THE biggest insts ever played on the NS scene — here on a tuff, immaculate UK press — noice....’Everybody Loves A Winner’ on flip.... )

Jenny One-Shot ‘Double Barrel’ (RCA / UK / 1971 / Ex+) £10

( Well — this is definitely up there with one of THE kookiest records I’ve ever featured...a kinda ‘Glam Rock’ cover version of Dave & Ansel Collins ‘Double Barrel’ smash — produced by Jonathan King — with a string quartet for backing...? Voiced by Jenny One-Shot in a breathy, Helen Reddy-styled vocal and backed up by a pseudo-Reggae 4 / 4 beat played by some studio / session no-ho’s...ya gotta love it, right? I do....totally unique, as only done ever here in the U of K... )

Willie Collins ‘She’s Hot pts 1 & 2’ (Skyride / USA / 1983 / M-) £15

( Unplayed copy of this much-indemand Modern Soul / Boogie biggie — very difficult on 12”...top tune that would have been massive @ Rock City back in the day but was as yet undiscovered back then, I believe...? )

Four Wonders ‘Just Looking For My Love’ / ‘Haven’t We Been Good For Each Other’ (Solid Foundation / USA / 1974 / Ex+) £75

( Hard issue copy here with both sides — usually turns up as a demo with ‘J L F M L’ on both sides — my first-ever copy.... )

( Unplayed copy of one of THE most indemand Crossover Soul 45s ever...trust me — this record has NEVER been near a turntable — difficult to put into words just how amazingly stunning this record is...impeccable.....flip is something quite different again, min — a banging instrumental that probably would have been massive at Wigan Casino at it’s peak — an out and out stomping instrumental — takes me back.... )

Spice ‘Sweet Norma Jones’ (Sound Gems / USA / 1974 / M-) £10

( Great early Philly beater from a very young John Davis...unplayed copy here.... )

Tommy Duncan ‘Dance, Dance, Dance’ / ‘Let’s Try It Over Again’ (Sue / UK / 1966 / Ex+) £40
