Kavettes I'm Not Sorry For You C/w You Broke Your Promise

Students of OKEH vinyl, Chicago and rare Northern Soul will confirm this offering as the gold text STOCK copy is one very rarely-seen 45.

As the well documented arranging and producing skills of Johnny Pate & Carl Davis are again on full display for the serious soul-scholar to hear. A 1964 horn driven “What’s The Mater Baby Is It Hurtin’ You” style Big City Beater of the most infectious kind. Already a Popcorn monster and BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN favourite with a lead Yuro-esque vocal prompted by a huge trombone intro, shrill girlfriend chorus and mighty ear-drum invading instrumental break, what’s not to like? This is girl-group Popcorn/Northern Soul at it’s best.

A disc with value coming through fivefold - Chicago, girl group, OKEH and superb Northern Soul / Popcorn dancer into the bargain.

Sorry sixfold the condition is spectacular!

Blues & Soul No. 3 December 1967

Never in all the years we have been presenting 60s Soul Magazine’s have we listed one is this startling condition. So near perfect it’s not true.

Inside this issue are two perforated pull out pink sheets; one for voting for your favourite Soul things of 1967 - the other a form to subscribe for another years of this embryonic magazine. I can tell you BOTH pink sheets are fully. intact and perfect as the day they came off the press.

With the amazing condition underlined - lets talk about the contents.

Superb front cover pic of Maxine Brown. Back cover is another eye-catching EMI advert for 9 different Soul albums. If you like the retro adverts. There are also full page displays from EMBER/Speciality, Island SKA and President.

Full page artists pics and bios of Mable John, Lou Rawls, Incredibles,

23 October 1967 review of Jr. Walker and the All Stars live at the RAM JAM CLUB, Brixton.

I’d tell you more, but to be frank the amazing condition has left me scared of flicking through the pages.. YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER EXAMPLE!

Marvelettes One Kiss Led To Another

Motown and girl group collectors this 10” studio acetate is a one-of-a-kind unissued Motown session by one of the label’s most-loved groups.

master # DM 042105 never reached vinyl most likely recorded circa 1963

Not the Coasters song from 1956 but strong new Marv Johnson composition showcasing a soulful young-girl Motown stroller with Gladys Horton’s lovelorn vocal leading proceedings. With the Funk Brothers adding depth - possibly Marvin Gaye & Benny Benjamin on Drums, certainly James Jamerson on his instantly recognizable Bass Guitar, Richard “Popcorn” Wylie on Piano, Eddie “Bongo” Brown providing subtle bongo rhythm and a rather classy under-stated baritone sax pumping away with timely prompts could well be Mike Terry.

The harmony background vocals from we presume Wanda Young, Georgeanna Tillman, Wyanetta (“Juanita”) Cowart & Katherine Anderson bring together a beautifully constructed Hitsville session - that for whatever reason this stunning array of talent failed to get a release.

Before you today is the actual acetate from the session a genuine MOTOWN STUDIO cut crediting the session with H-467 mix dub # 1428

Remember this is UNIQUE not another copy known to exist!

Ripples Only Time Will Tell C/w Cowboys To Girls

Listen and weep.

RARE Chicago sweet soul from the same label as the fabulous James Phelps record.

Take time to listen to some real soul that stirs the emotions to the core. Swirling strings, heavenly harmonies cradle this lady, as the young girl pours her heart out onto the floor, you will find yourself wanting to run to her aid,as she opens her heart and delivers hopeless despair in wave after wave pleading.

Then the masterstroke as the guy who has dome all the damage comes in and begs her apology…

Now I’m begging for a spot at next SOUL ESSENCE in the “slit-your-wrists” lounge where I’d spin this, volume to the limit so the whole of Norwich could hear perfect soul music from the streets of Chicago.

Ray Pollard This Time (i'm Gonna Be True) C/w No More Like Me

SHRINE TIME!

Beloved New Yorker Ray Pollard teams up with newlyweds Raynoma Gordy & Eddie Singleton to craft two amazing BIG VOCAL beauties for the world’s most-collectable Soul-label.

Listen and melt when the skills of Motown-tutored Miss Ray builds a mountain of strings engaged by an oohing vocal-group chorus to compliment Mr. Pollard unparalleled “Big City” tone. The marriage of Miss Ray & Eddie Singleton in the studio may have been financed by Motown but they sure took Soul music away from the commercial course Hitsville were careering along.

Not a hint of trying to please a white audience as the snarling vocal fills the room suspended by a raft of voices building the harmony chorus supported by some of the finest string arrangements you could ever wish to hear.

Flip it over and your in BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN as the pace drops allowing the true potency of Ray Pollard vocal to come trough loud and clear. On this side Miss ray draws from the wonderful early 60s Motown ballads of The Miracles, Satintones & Temptations etc as again she works the backing vocalists though every imaginable pitch.

Out of all the SHRINE jewels this one is delivers twice over, with music that is today sadly a LOST ART!

Soul Set Will You Ever Learn C/w Please Don't Make Me Cry

Carolinas Northern Soul at it’s finest!

Rare in the extreme and dripping with that 60s Soul-appreciation the two states clubs bristled with during the 60s. The compulsory horns and a led vocal who wished he was born a different colour are fused by enthusiasm into proper-Northern Soul.

Yes a proper real-deal Northern Soul dance-floor delight with a saxophone & horn instrumental break of fully 29 seconds making this one stand-out experience as the booming vocal jumps back in even more pumped up than before.

The topside is an unassailable sound of it’s type, but the flipside gives it a run for it’s money - again littered with crazed horn work & that inspired vocal by a mixed of Soul n’ Elvis vocal.

Love it! Both sides…

Ernest Mosley Stubborn Heart

Simultaneously a mid-70s Wigan Casino & Cleethorpes Pier monster spawning a bootleg press such was it’s popularity.

But before you today is an immaculate (finest condition example I’ve encountered in memory) blue stock copy, on a label that gave the Northern Soul collector quite a few trophies to chase.

Click the sound file to be catapulted back to the Golden Age of Northern Soul - follow it with the bid button if you want to own a copy with flawless labels and vinyl that only reveals a couple of brief sleeve brushes in string light.

A beautiful period in history and this is one beautiful copy!

Marvin Gaye Hello Broadway

An unusual Tamla Motown project as Berry Gordy diverts Marvin into jazz mode, but this Los Angeles experiment failed to impress the record buying public BOTH sides of the Atlantic.

As the USA album it is seldom seen for sale, as this the 14th British album release under the Tamla Motown label it failed miserably.

Today this highly sought-after missing number, is considered a top ten rarest resident of the first 100 releases.

This copy has a neat clean cover with no flaws front or back. Both labels are clean - vinyl only reveals a couple of light surface blemishes in strong light and suits snugly inside the original 1965 poly-lined inner.

A very tough lp to acquire and this copy is a beauty!

T. K. Murray & C.a.t. C.a.t.

Fully SIX outrageously fine 70s dance tracks hidden away on an album that just does not give a hint of the treasures that lie inside.

But as always happens, those rare soul pioneers sniffed it out to uncover some amazing tracks. What a shock the first person who discovered these beauties must have had. With NOT a single track reaching 7” status until after 3 decades of Rare Groove spins and demand reaching epidemic proportions did that enterprising DJ Pin-up Andy Davis release 2 singles from this trophy album on his highly regarded STREET SOUL label in 2010

Sit back and listen to fully SIX killer examples of perfect Rare Soulful dance then spy the scan; for lovers of seriously elusive albums in their original form not many offers as much as this prize does.

sound clips of of :1. wanted to fall in love 2. where’s there true love 3. brown sugar 4. there ya go again 5. my love, true love 6. use what you got
There is a further 3 tracks to complete this masterpiece.

Elgins Heaven Must Have Sent You C/w Stay In My Lonely Arms

You are spying the rare 1966 UK issue that for some inexplicable reason flopped the first time round in 1966, creating a real TMG rarity.

With The Twisted Wheel, Mojo, Nite Owl, Beachcomber etc. DJ’s giving it a new lease of life after it’s quick deletion. Such became it’s popularity EMI re-issued it 187 Tamla Motown releases later in 1970. It was an instant success gaining not only even more Club spins, but also rampaging through every youth club in the land, as the next generation of “soulies” were about to embark on the their own All-Nigher journey’s.

So very classic, so many memories for everyone who ever set foot on a 70s dancefloor, but f your serious about UK Tamla Motown you need this, the original 1966 release everybody but the seriously dedicated missed the first time round.

This copy is a strong clean Excellent + throughout!

Gene Woodbury Ever Again C/w That's Not Half Bad

Autographed by writer, producer and label main-man William Lucas

As the copies of Bernie Williams slowly but surely shy away from the Northern Soul turntables as the value and the scarey fragility of styrene keep the USA Bell release safely filed away and out of reached of cue-burn.

So enter this pumping version, that is quickly climbing in value and popularity as it’s rarity increases and the high quality vinyl guarantees durability. It is at this moment a dead-cert dance-floor-detonator.

Few will need reminding the flipside is a reworking of his rare earlier Del-Val release also a potent piece of Northern Soul. Offering two strong NS sides on one increasingly elusive disc - that William Lucas a added his moniker to.

What more could a boy ask for..?

Bare Wire Groovin' Is Easy C/w Run Out Of Time

RARE!

An undocumented small town Illinois nearly 4 hours from Chicago.

Canton, Illinois throws up a late 60s double hitter saturated in attitude and angst with a sound that will remind you of the more defiant of blue-eyed Northern Soul groups like The Q, The Outsiders etc. projecting a mix of foot-to-the-metal Hammond and potent horns whipping up the background for a whining hard-done-to lead singer yelling his youthful frustration into the lyrics.

It all works rather well - for those of you seeking the different & the obscure Northern Soul.. this is both.

Little Joe Cook Stormy Monday Blues Part 1 & 2

A legendary SUE 45 showcasing the marketing prowess and imagination of Chris Blackwell and Guy Stevens plucking a then “unknown” in the UK Philadelphia singers name, hoping to add “Theatrical gloss” to this blues session. After all, nearly all blues-artist’s name seemed to start with “Little” or “Big”.

Whether Chris Farlowe was under contractual obligations elsewhere at the time is unclear but that throaty ball-bearing gargled style vocal could not hide the real artists name for long.

In fact if you inspect the label closely the previous owner has written “Alias - Chris Farlowe” neatly under the Little Joe Cook credit.

Vinyl is pristine, as is the flipside label - a-side label sports the secret that wasn’t kept for very long.

That Marvin Gaye LP looks cheap against the copy that went for almost £140 on eBay UK recently. I picked up a copy for £20 the following week but it isn't in anywhere near as good condition. Rare LP.

Posted

i was going on the fact that i paid £20 for gene woodbury when i was on the dole in the 90`s

Must admit I was shocked at what it went for this time round, because mine cost me a fiver 30 years ago!

Posted (edited)

Christ, bought and then quickly sold my Gene Woodbury for £250,  3 months ago...

that said, the vocal is no where near Bernie Williams is it...

..was my belief till I just looked into popsike...obviously I was way behind with my idea as all copies during the last four years have sold between 900 and 3000 usd. still hard to believe when this title was amongst the more easy to get hold of shrine 45s along jimmy armstrong etc in the 90s
