Petedillon Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 An old question but its my age so be patient with me..I'm getting confused lately The spoken intro on the demo, isnt on the issue... but is it on any of the boots? or is the Calla demo the only way to get it? is it on the UK release? 1
Gene-r Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Think it's only on the Calla demo (or some issues?). It definitely wasn't issued in the UK.
Pete S Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Think it's only on the Calla demo (or some issues?). It definitely wasn't issued in the UK. I have one here, Calla 127 demo. Thats the usually red/white label demo. So what are the blue/white label demos I think I've seen?
Denbo Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Think it's only on the Calla demo (or some issues?). It definitely wasn't issued in the UK. You mean the spoken intro was definitely not issued on the UK release, right?
Paul Dunn Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 The spoken intro is on the issue as well but it's quite rare
Tony A Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 The spoken intro is on the issue as well but it's quite rare Got 3 issues with spoken intro, not that rare IMO.
Guest Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 (edited) Think it's only on the Calla demo (or some issues?). It definitely wasn't issued in the UK. Au contraire! Edited March 11, 2013 by Guest
Gene-r Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 Au contraire! classicals.jpg Not 'au contraire' Steve! What I meant to say was that the spoken intro wasn't on the UK issue, not that it wasn't issued in the UK! Must get my phrasing right sometimes........
Petedillon Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 ..Gene..the comment in my opening post about 'was it on the UK release' should have given a clue that it was released in UK..I was merely asking if the intro was on the UK release, not was it released....Thanks for everybody going to the trouble of replying..

Mal C Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I'm sure this was also on a yank red/white issue.. as above, quite rare, but it does turn up..
Len Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 (edited) The UK one is very rare isn't it? - Yes, without the spoken intro! Off 'original' topic I know - Great record, that sadly falls into the 'we know it too well so don't want to hear it' bracket All the best, Len Edited March 11, 2013 by LEN
Tiberius Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I'm sure this was also on a yank red/white issue.. as above, quite rare, but it does turn up.. US issue - https://www.popsike.com/FRANKIE-CLASSICALS-Northern-Soul-45-CALLA-Records/4785399043.html The US Calla 45's number C-127 B is the 2:28 slow spoken intro version. C-127-BN is the 2:00 version. I've seen at least 3 US issues with the spoken intro on ebay.com between $20 and $30 "buy it now" over the years.....not minters but reasonably good copies.

Chalky Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 US issue - https://www.popsike.com/FRANKIE-CLASSICALS-Northern-Soul-45-CALLA-Records/4785399043.html The US Calla 45's number C-127 B is the 2:28 slow spoken intro version. I had the issue (well I'm 99.9% certain) in the late 80's early 90's with the spoken intro. Always thought the way to tell is with the numbers above and not issue/demo.
Soul16 Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I have the spoken intro version on a red and white Calla Demo. On my particular copy, 'Promotion copy Not for sale' only appears on the (What shall I do) B side - The A side looks like a standard issue - Well, it would do apart from the big red cross that the Plugger/Radio Station daubed on the label.
Millo Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I just received this in the post thinking that I had purchased the spoken intro version as it was 2.28min long. It must be miss-labelled as it only plays for two minutes and without the spoken intro. A bit disappointed having paid $40 for it but hey ho that is record collecting. 1
Daved Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Sorry I have nothing to add regarding the intro or different releases, but does anyone else think this record is absolute rubbish. It's got to be up there with the worst 10 played on the scene ever

Speedlimit Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 The spoken intro is on the issue as well but it's quite rarethe spoken intro is on the first issue as the B side while the second issue its the version without the spoken intro on the A side
hovis09 Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 hii have the spoken intro on issue and looks just like the photos posted by millohope this helps

Thinksmart Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I still enjoy it. A formative record in early stages of getting into the music. It is part of the weird, diverse mix that makes Northern Soul what it is. 3
Popular Post Patto Posted April 5, 2017 Popular Post Posted April 5, 2017 Always much prefered the instrumental by Honey Townsend.Sounds great played out 6
Ian Stacey Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I still play this if asked I have the no talking intro 2 mins long .great for dancing at your BEST I love it ! the spoken intro .one would not play intro I would have to start it late .Not keen on spoken intro . 3
Mellorful Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I have the long intro version on red US Calla, also got Laura Greene Moonlight Music and you which has a long intro and Honey Townsend world again, no intro just instrumental.... I know it's rarer with the spoken intro but I have always prefered it without. I remember the spoken intro version being played at the Casino. Too much talking when I wanted to dance!!
Bruv Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 I have both copies, only play the spoken intro version at home as it's a bit long winded, as has been mentioned. 1
dthedrug Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 HI ALL....I was going to tell Pete he was not mistaken about the Blue & White Demo, also as stated it does not have the spoken intro, As for the UK issue I have 2 of them, KTF.
Pga1 Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 Hiya, probably been asked before. How many records use this same backing track ? Honey Townsend, mark Johnson , Laura green etc ? Years ago I remember for some reason we got to about 14 tracks. Anyone remember the - subway riders or something like that ? Or were a lot just cover names of same track ? What shall I do covers two with different intros I guess. Cheers

Cheers It's eight (possibly 9) - ~The high numbers quoted in the past of 14-17 variations probably refer to different pressings of same records (issue, demo, reissue, UK etc). Cheers Mick 1
Popular Post givemesoul Posted April 8, 2017 Popular Post Posted April 8, 2017 Anybody who calls this tune rubbish is sorely misguided this along with the Casualeers and Jerry Williams if you ask me are tunes which got an awfull lot of ppl into this scene go hide your cloth ears its a fantastic song and always will be 1 8

Frankie and the Classicals was my favourite track on that album, I used to play it over and over again. Edited April 8, 2017 by Soul16 Spelling 4

The instrumental of What Shall I Do which appears on a few copies has to be a mispress.
Guest Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Echo the remarks above about it being a quality and iconic 45 along with the Casualeers and Jerry Williams. In fact I would say for sure the Casualeers is one of the perfect records to play someone who askes "What is Northern Soul. It`s a brilliant flagship in my opinion.

Popular Post Steve L Posted April 10, 2017 Popular Post Posted April 10, 2017 The beginning of the journey for me - Frankie & The Classicals was part of my introduction to northern as a 13 year old in 1974, still have the copy I bought back then with all the other disco demands and still love it! 4

Same here, I was a touch older but those early 3 figure DDS 500 records were just brilliant. Series was revamped with a DDS 2000 numbering and seemed to go downhill towards the end (Sounds of Lancashire / Flintnick Rock etc.) But the early ones as mentioned above, alongside the Wand/Scepter LP were fantastic to a novice like me 2
