An old question but its my age so be patient with me..I'm getting confused lately

The spoken intro on the demo, isnt on the issue...  but is it on any of the boots? or is the Calla demo the only way to get it? is it on the UK release?

Think it's only on the Calla demo (or some issues?).  It definitely wasn't issued in the UK.

I have one here, Calla 127 demo.  Thats the usually red/white label demo.

So what are the blue/white label demos I think I've seen?

You mean the spoken intro was definitely not issued on the UK release, right?

Not 'au contraire' Steve!  What I meant to say was that the spoken intro wasn't on the UK issue, not that it wasn't issued in the UK!  Must get my phrasing right sometimes........

..Gene..the comment  in my opening post about 'was it on the UK release'   should have given a clue that it was released in UK..I was merely asking if the intro was on the UK release, not was it released....Thanks for everybody going to the trouble of replying.. :hatsoff2:

Well, I knew what you meant Pete, and that's what my response was based on!  :D

The UK one is very rare isn't it? - Yes, without the spoken intro! :D

Off 'original' topic I know - Great record, that sadly falls into the 'we know it too well so don't want to hear it' bracket

All the best,

Len

I'm sure this was also on a yank red/white issue.. as above, quite rare, but it does turn up..

US issue -

https://www.popsike.com/FRANKIE-CLASSICALS-Northern-Soul-45-CALLA-Records/4785399043.html

The US Calla 45's number C-127 B is the 2:28 slow spoken intro version.  C-127-BN is the 2:00 version.

I've seen at least 3 US issues with the spoken intro on ebay.com between $20 and $30 "buy it now" over the years.....not minters but reasonably good copies.

I had the issue (well I'm 99.9% certain) in the late 80's early 90's with the spoken intro.  Always thought the way to tell is with the numbers above and not issue/demo.

I have the spoken intro version on a red and white Calla Demo.

On my particular copy, 'Promotion copy Not for sale' only appears on the (What shall I do) B side - The A side looks like a standard issue - Well, it would do apart from the big red cross that the Plugger/Radio Station daubed on the label.

I just received this in the post thinking that I had purchased the spoken intro version as it was 2.28min long. It must be miss-labelled as it only plays for two minutes and without the spoken intro. A bit disappointed having paid $40 for it but hey ho that is record collecting.

Sorry I have nothing to add regarding the intro or different releases, but does anyone else think this record is absolute rubbish. It's got to be up there with the worst 10 played on the scene ever

The spoken intro is on the issue as well but it's quite rare

the spoken intro is on the first issue as the B side  while the second issue its the  version without the spoken intro on the A side

I know it's rarer with the spoken intro but I have always prefered it without.

I remember the spoken intro version being played at the Casino.  Too much talking when I wanted to dance!!

I have both copies, only play the spoken intro version at home as it's a bit long winded, as has been mentioned.  :)

Hiya, probably  been asked before.  How many records use this same backing track ? Honey Townsend, mark Johnson , Laura green etc ? Years ago I remember for some reason we got to about 14 tracks. Anyone remember the - subway riders or something  like that ? Or were a lot just cover names of same track ? What shall I do covers two with different intros I guess. Cheers

It's eight (possibly 9) - ~The high numbers quoted in the past of 14-17 variations probably refer to different pressings of same records (issue, demo, reissue, UK etc).

Cheers

Most copies of the above play an instrumental version of Betty Lavette's Only Your Love Can Save Me with two people talking over it, hence After The Session.  The instrumental of What Shall I Do which appears on a few copies has to be a mispress.

Echo the remarks above about it being a quality and iconic 45 along with the Casualeers and Jerry Williams. In fact I would say for sure the Casualeers is one of the perfect records to play someone who askes "What is Northern Soul. It`s a brilliant flagship in my opinion.

The beginning of the journey for me - Frankie & The Classicals  was part of my introduction to northern as a 13 year old in 1974, still have the copy I bought back then with all the other disco demands and still love it!

Same here, I was a touch older but those early 3 figure DDS 500 records were just brilliant. Series was revamped with a DDS 2000 numbering and seemed to go downhill towards the end (Sounds of Lancashire / Flintnick Rock etc.)

But the early ones as mentioned above, alongside the Wand/Scepter LP were fantastic to a novice like me
