Guest in town Mikey Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Can anybody remember when the main after the event question was "Did you hear anything new?". Now it seems to be "Where can I get a curry-what were the beds like in the hotel" etc etc.... What time is the train? We need it in case xxxxx hasn't nicket a car to get us home.
Citizen P Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 What time is the train? We need it in case xxxxx hasn't nicket a car to get us home. Don't remember that one, mainly because none of us had trainfare...
sir cumference Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 These are all valid points about the hotels etc. But think back, when you went anywhere-how old was the oldest niter goer? Weren`t many 50/60 year olds! So in that respect when you get the "just like the Casino" on the advert-it ain`t. 2
Citizen P Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 To be honest, I don't get the Hotel bit if you're going to an allnighter. Is it because you'll not be staying All Night, or is it to get you're head down after??
night nurse Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 as so many on here keep saying there is millions of tune out there so is there any need to play a tune 2 or 3 times simples if your booked to DJ get there early and listen simples aint it

Len Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 (edited) ......and would you want it to be? The Scene was always supposed to be a progressive scene not......I couldn't think of the word opposite to progressive, see below - There's lots (most fit!) Opposite words for progressive: decreasing, retrogressive, reactionary, unmodernized, intolerant, inactive, early, unordered, traditional, rudimentary, doctrinal, dogmatic, fusty, orthodox, savage, embryonic, passé, hoary, reverting, uncivilized, antiquated, out-of-date, immature, returning, unripe, rigid, undeveloped, conservative, rude, nonprogressive, unripened, lower, atavistic, past, primordial, green, retrograde, primeval, antique, stodgy, hidebound, customary, old-fashioned, blinkered, conventional, antediluvian, primitive, obsolete, conservativist, narrow-minded, germinal, backward, strict, unmodernised, outworn, unreconstructed, old, undersized, old-time, dated, neanderthal, oldfangled, musty, disordered, low, throwback, hard, bigoted, underdeveloped, established, regressive. I had to take some out! All the best, Len Edited March 26, 2013 by LEN
sir cumference Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Bloody hell,Len-have you swallowed a dictionary,or just got too much time on your hands LOL You`re right lots of us don`t want it to be how it was.I was making the point with regards to hotel bookings, the validity of which only exists because of the ageing population who do go to niters.Something that has never crossed my mind. It would be interesting to find out how many of the attendees are still at any of the "big" oldies orientated all nighters,at 0500hrs. 1

Good Old Sam eh !!!! 2
Len Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I think Mr Barnfather was 96 when he went to Wigan. He is 170 now. Good Old Sam eh !!!! It's all about attitude - I know people who are younger than me (I'm 42 and a half) with an 'old attitude' influenced by people around them I suppose. Sam has a great attitude, whether you like his style or not All the best, Len

There is a group of us old faithfuls from all points of the compass that get together at least once a year for a Northern weekender. The chap who is the most committed to organising these reunions is always the first one in bed. After about 5 pints of Old Speckled Hen (or whatever the local tincture is) he is falling asleep in his chair and has to be put to bed, usually around 11:00 o'clock. 1

To be fair though, these types are enjoying themselves, yes and the ones that leave for their hotels. It's up to them ain't it? We're just desperately clinging on the hope that the nighter scene (as we knew it) will last forever - It won't, it's shrinking all the time. But I'm gonna embrace the change, and enjoy when I go out as much as I can. Even now, I'm enjoying the smaller room soul nights more than ever before. All the best, Len 2
georgeblackwell Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Good word! All the best, Len Perhaps I should have said audacity, but then we are getting into the whole semantics thing again. 1
Joefromupnorth Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I remember at Wigan 73/74 that a new tunes would be played 3 or 4 times in a set to break them, never mind a night but there wasn't the number of tunes around then to choose from. Today however a lot of Dj's turn up 10 minutes before their spot, so have no idea what's been played earlier, take a leaf out of Sean Chapman's book, get there at the beginning of the session & note down those played that you might have played. I remember being at a venue & scanning the 30 or so records a Dj's had ready to choose from to play & informing him that all but 3 or so had been played earlier & yes he had arrived 10 minutes prior to his spot. Spot. Bang on mentioning Sean Pete, say at Whitby as he once told me he was on his record stall but still taking in what was being played so he could leave any off his list that he may have been going to play, last time i was there in his set he repeated one and i dare say that was because there is now music in the foyer which drowns the main room, others with maybe the odd exception seemed not to give a jot about repeats.Middleton and i always seem to bring the old place up ( cos it was brilliant that's why ) you were pushed to hear a couple of repeats in nearly 12 hours !!! speaks volume's in my book. 1

It was against the law to play repeats at middleton lol, obviously the odd one did happen but it was rare because all the djs were there from the start. Our new venue in ashton [2 niters this year]has the same policy, all djs were early yesterday result was a 10 hour dayer no repeats .

Is it because you'll not be staying All Night, or is it to get you're head down after?? personally about getting my head down for even a couple of hours...its ok if you live local with maybe under and hours drive home like gloucester is for me..but weve just done radcliffe..got there about 10..stayed till the end (although we dont at every niter)and even if i hadnt had a drink would have been irrisponsible at best to drive 3 hours back to bristol...suicide at worst! dean
Raremusicdirect Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Actually, I’ve just remembered something - A while back I was at ‘an event’ where a well-known D.J was explaining to me (all matter of fact like)......“If ‘so and so’ is here I know he’s gonna play ‘this and that’, so I won’t play them, but I’ll play ‘this’ instead" I remember thinking Jesus, if things are that predictable, why D.J? - It certainly wouldn’t interest me. At least he was paying attention, and determined not to do the repeat thing I suppose. As you can see, I’m not one to ‘name names’ etc - I’ll leave that to the older boys All the best, Len Not stalking you Len lol............ I think this does sometimes happen..........If a dj has some known tunes that they always play (hopefully through a love for them), then if you are on after, it makes no sense to take those same tunes espcecially as hopefully you have other equally as good tunes to drop in. This benefits the crowd attending... 1
Raremusicdirect Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 was at an event just before xmas and three different versions of "wade in the water" by three different d.j.`s its obviously d.j.s not listening to other sets before theirs It may have been intentional as they were different versions.............sometimes different versions can be interesting ...............well they can be to me
Len Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 (edited) It may have been intentional as they were different versions.............sometimes different versions can be interesting ...............well they can be to me Agreed - The 'different version' is an obsession of ours! All the best, Len P.s .....Now where're going to 'RareMusicDirect'? Edited April 3, 2013 by LEN 1
