Ave. Sax ‘Sister James’ (A&M / UK / 1973 / M-) £15 ( Hugely influential / indemand instrumental which has been enjoying a real resurgence in popoularity on the NS lately — was ENORMOUS on the ‘scene back in the day — I’ve NEVER had / seen a UK copy before — a quite bizarre record in many ways and God only knows they’ve spun some weird shit on that ’scene down the years, eh? Lovely copy — practically unplayed — just a bit dusty….reminds me a LOT of The Glitter Band ‘Makes You Blind’ actually… ) The Moments ‘Nine Times’ (All Platinum / UK / 1976 / M-) £5 ( Heavy-pressed, UK copy… ) Betty Cee ‘Lovesick’ (Al Turn / USA / 1980s / M-) £20 ( Stunning Modern Soul dancer from right back in the early days of the Modern scene… ) Major Lance ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ / ‘Follow The Leader’ (Atlantic (red) / UK / 1969 / M-) £12 ( Uplayed copy of this peaktime Windy City NS double-sider from ‘The Major’ — simply a Black Music legend…. ) Sons Of Robin Stone ‘Got To Get You Back’ (Atlantic / UK / 1974 / M-) £12 ( Unplayed big ‘A’ demo copy of this ever-indemand, ever-popular NS seventies soul dancer — sounds amazing even to this day — irresistible….my first-ever demo copy — MUST be rare… ) Errol Dixon ‘Heavy Shuffle’ / ‘Gloria’ (Blue Beat / UK / 1966 / VG) £40 ( Currently HUGE on the Ska / R&B / Popcorn scenes and recently topped £150 on the evil one for a lesser copy than this…..one for the Mods too — stunning 45 with THE best organ lick on the whole damned List….minor, minor background interference, most dealers would grade this VG+ with confidence…contact me for a clip… ) Vicki Anderson ‘In The Land Of Milk And Honey’ (Brownstone / USA / 1972 / M-) £25 ( Her best? Maybe………right up there — decent flip too ‘I’ll Work It Out’ — again — totally virginal copy…. ) Norman Connors ‘Once I’ve Been There’ (Buddah / USA / 1975 / M-) £5 ( Unplayed copy… ) Leon Haywood ‘I Wanna Thank You’ / ‘I Was Sent To Love You’ (Capitol / UK / 1970 / M-) £10 ( Immaculate copy — 2 outstanding sides….both sides tried and trusted Northern Soul at it’s very finest…. ) Hari Paris ‘You Hit My Love’ (Cardaja / USA / 1986 / M-) £8 ( Was SO massive back in the day — outstanding Modern Soul dancer — on an even rarer WD copy here too — love this… ) Charnissa ‘Will It Take Magic’ (CRP / USA / 1980s / M-) £8 ( Rare Modern Soul 7” — Charles Johnson-produced — great floater / dancer on topside which I remember getting spun back in the day and a decent slowie to the flip — noice…. ) Yvonne Fair ‘Straighten Up’ / ‘Say Yeah Yeah’ (Dade / USA / 1960s / M-) £50 ( Massively indemand currently — ALL of this lady’s early JB-produced sides are stunning — dig in…! Just “off the clock” R&B….going H-U-G-E ON THE Popcorn scene too… ) Nat Kendrick & The Swans ‘Wobble Wobble pts 1 & 2’ (Dade / USA / 1960s / M-) £10 ( Another killa Club double-sider from Nat K and his Swans — immaculate copy again… ) The Floaters ‘Take One Step At A Time’ (Fee / USA / 1976 / Ex+) £10 ( Excellent uptempo Northern Soul dancer with great synths and a pounding rhythm section from the same band who went on to hit pay dirt soon after with the cheese-laden, astrological chart-ridden ‘Float On’ worldwide smash — but — forget that bilge and dig into this — a rather wonderful dancer which bangs hard — actually reminds me a lot of Hokis Pokis ‘Nowhere’ and I believe was a biggie for a while at both the Casino AND The Blackpool Mecca? Tune…cheesy flip…the shape of things to come? ) The Impressions ‘It’s All Right’ / ‘You’ll Want Me Back’ (HMV / UK / 1963 / VG+) £8 The Impressions ‘You Must Believe Me’ / ‘See The Real Me’ (HMV / UK / 1964 / VG+) £8 The Impressions ‘I Need You’ / ‘Never Could You Be’ (HMV / UK / 1965 / UK / VG+) £8 ( Okay, so — above we have a triptych of some of THE finest black sounds EVER laid down — agreed? Maxine Brown ‘I Can’t Get Along With You’ / ‘Reason To Believe’ (Major Minor / UK / 1970 / Ex+) £12 ( Stamped Demo copy of this exquisite Maxine B double-sider — great dancer on topside — stunning — gorgeous weepie on flip — remarkably good double-sider and exceedingly rare on UK press….wonderful copy too… ) Prince Harold ‘Baby, You’ve Got Me’ / ‘Forget About Me’ (Mercury / UK / 1966 / Ex) £8 ( Nice and clean UK press for this much-loved NS double-sider…. ) The Velours ‘I’m Gonna Change’ (MGM / UK / 1967 / M-) £15 ( Hard UK press for this HUGE Northern Soul oldie from waaaay back in the day….nice floater on the flip too entitled ‘Don’t Pity Me’ which is NOT a version of Sue Lynne before anybody asks, okay? Wonderful shape here — appears unplayed…also done by Frankie Valli later on down the line… ) Vicki Anderson ‘I Can’t Let You Go pts 1 & 2’ (New Breed / USA / 1960s / M-) £25 ( I honestly NEVER knew Vicki had recorded on New Breed till this one rolled in — totally, totally brilliant 45 and Vicki’s voice sounds absolutely magnificent…actually reminds me a little bit of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins ‘I Put A Spell On You’ — same kinda tempo / arrangement — totally, totally outstanding production from JB…. ) Hank Ballard ‘Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go’ / ‘If You’d Forgive Me’ (Parlophone / UK / 1960 / VG) £10 ( Dinked middle and a few scuffs but pretty damned nice otherwise — SUCH a hard UK release….wonderful Popcorn / R&B…decent flip too…. ) Madeline Bell ‘I’m Gonna Make You Love Me’ (Philips / UK / 1967 / Ex+) £5 ( Lovely copy of this great, UK-only NS dancer as written by Gamble / Ross for The Supremes and The Tempts…this is waaaaay better… The Jones Girls ‘You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else’ (PIR / USA / 1979 / M-) £5 ( Unplayed copy in correct custom sleeve ) Maxine Brown ‘Oh No, Not My Baby’ (Pye International / UK / 1964 / VG) £10 ( Lotsa scuffs / marks but plays an absolute dream…’You Upset My Soul’ on flip is also top-drawer… ) The Packers ‘Hole In The Wall’ / ‘Go Ahead On’ (Pye International / UK / 1965 / VG+) £10 ( Just all-time classic Mod / Soul instrumentals — right up there with ‘Green Onions’ etc etc for me….lovely copy — just minor surface scuffs which d n a p hardly at all… ) The Real Thing ‘Stone Cold Love Affair’ (Pye / UK / 1975 / M-) £15 ( Unplayed copy in correct custom sleeve of this wonderful 70s / NS dancer — their rarest record...I’ve also got a very decent VG+ copy that I want £10 for — complete and total bargain…. ) Maxine Brown ‘Let Me Give You My Lovin’ (Pye Disco Demand / UK / 1976 / M-) £8 ( Unplayed big ‘A’ demo copy of this immaculate double-sider with ‘One In A Million’ on the flip — I’ve also got an issue copy for £4 — totally clean too…. ) Derrick Morgan ‘Greedy Gal’ (Pyramid / UK / 1969 / VG) £15 ( Loadsa scuffs but plays like a dream with only minor crackle — much-loved Skinhead cut and flip brings us the equally superb ‘Marcus Junior’ by The Soul Bros — amazing double-sider…. ) King George ‘I’m Gonna Be Somebody, Someday’ / ‘Drive On James’ (RCA Victor / UK / 1966 / VG) £12 ( Dinked middle and scuffs a-plenty but NO scratches / jumps / gouges at all — hard UK press for this tough NS double-sider — sounds like a Detroit job to me (is it?) and the singer here is a ringer for Dean Parrish to my ears — MUST be rare on UK? ) Charles Drain ‘Is This Really Love’ / ‘Only You’ (RCA / USA / 1975 / M-) £5 ( 2 great sides from CD’s wonderful LP — one side = dancer, other side = slowie….top VFM… ) Horizon ‘You Went Away’ / ‘Give It Up’ (Shine / USA / 1980 / M-) £150 ( Currently HUGE on so many scenes — Modern Soul / Northern / Funk / Boogie / Disco — a stunning, stunning funky-soul-boogie bomb with all of the requisite parts in the right place — IMPOSSIBLE to find — and this one is unplayed — very difficult to categorise / pigeon-hole so I won’t try — but — lotsa cats sweating this one right now so PLEASE be quick…both sides just smash it to shit…contact me for a clip… ) Willie Collins ‘She’s Hot pts 1 & 2’ (Skyride / USA / 1983 / M-) £12 ( Unplayed copy of this much-indemand Modern Soul / Boogie biggie — very difficult on 12”…top tune that would have been massive @ Rock City back in the day but was as yet undiscovered back then, I believe…? ) The Packers ‘Hole In The Wall’ / ‘Go Head On’ (Soul City / UK / 1965 / Ex) £8 ( Again — 2 stunning organ-led, instrumentals — love the Soul City label design, timeless — very minor wear here — a must-have… ) The Whispers ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’ (Soul Train / UK / 1976 / VG+) £5 ( Great Philly / NS dancer — reminds me a lot of South Shore Commission’s ‘Free Man’ — a clarion call to the dancefloor…few scuffs / minor intro crackle — bargain — big ‘A’ demo too…. ) The Impressions ‘We’re A Winner’ / ‘You’ve Got Me Runnin’ (Stateside / UK / 1967 / VG+) £10 ( Lotsa scuffs but still a GREAT copy — one of Curtis’s finest on the topside and the flip ain’t too shabby neither…. ) Hank Jacobs ‘Monkey, Hips And Rice’ / ‘So Far Away’ (Sue / UK / 1964 / VG+) £15 ( All-time classic ‘groove’ double-siders on one of THE finest UK imprints of all time… ) Jr. Walker and the All Stars ‘Shake And Fingerpop’ / ‘Cleo’s Back’ (Tamla Motown TMG 529 / UK / 1965 / VG) £10 ( All-time classic Motown instrumentals….huge, huge tunes… ) The Motown Spinners ‘It’s A Shame’ (Tamla Motown / UK /1970 / VG+) £5 ( Never, ever fails to get blokes of my age doing the ‘Dad Dance’ at Northern do’s up and down the country…niec copy here — just a few crackles… ) J.R Bailey ‘Heaven On Earth’ / ‘After Hours’ (Toy / USA / 1972 / M-) £5 ( I personally think this man’s outstanding LP on MAM is actually even better than Sam Dees ‘The Show Must Go On’ cos pound-for-pound and track-for-track, the quality is waaaaay better — and — these 2 tracks here are, simply put, possibly THE best 2 tracks on that amazing LP — 100% unplayed and completely virginal copy here…. ) Phyllis Swinnie ‘This Is Your Last Chance’ / ‘Please Don’t Let Me Down’ (Treble Works / USA / 1982 / M-) £15 ( Again — I always thought this was 12”-only?
