Robbk Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I don't know how "The Uncle Willie" started, or who it was named after. But, if I remember correctly, it started in Chicago (where I was living at the time). We had a release by The Daylighters ("Mama, Teach Me How To Do the Uncle Willie"), and by Lttle Natalie, Henry (Ford) and The Gifts("It's Uncle Willie"). Seems like they were using the name "Willy" in songs back in Blues songs in the '30s and '40s (it was slang for the male "member". We had "Willie and the Hand Jive" from The Johnny Otis Show in 1955. Maybe Bob A. know the origin from one of his interviewees? 1
Sceneman Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 ok we have a pretty good list now , but what about the movements that went with the name of the dance ? and how did they disseminate those moves to the club dancers in the days of very little communications ... and who was the originator ? prolly lost to time by now. you could write an encyclopedia on this topic.
